Discord Server + Call for Beta Readers

Hihi! Read below for information about the new discord server. If you're interested in beta reading for Rains in Heaven, scroll a little lower. There's also some news I'd like to inform y'all at the end.

You are to react to the message in the #rules channel before you gain access to anything else (i.e. general chat, announcements, and updates). After completing that, you can go to #roles channel to pick your roles including your pronouns, what continent you're from, what RO interests you the most, and if you want to be apart of the spoilers chat. Reacting to the spoilers roles will give you access to the spoilers channel, but if you don't react to it, you won't get access.

Remember: general chat is for everything BUT spoilers.

What are spoilers? Anything that reveals what happened in the demo; things that people who haven't played through the game won't know.

As it is my first time creating a discord server, there may be errors or issues with the channel permissions and other stuff. Please be patient and kind with me. If you run into any server issues, you can let me know in the #bug-reports channel.

Also note that the server is not actively monitored by moderators.

Call for Beta Readers

I'll accept anyone that comments between today and next Friday (February 21st). Afterwards, you'll be given access to the beta reader channels where you can read the rules and instructions.

Briefly, to be a beta reader, you must be able to keep everything confidential. This includes any passwords I provide, and any potential spoilers from the beta demo. You must also be kind when reporting. For example, if you see multiple of the same errors, don't be like "are you dumb? how could you miss that so many times?"

Beta readers will have one full week to beta playthrough the demo and report any grammatical errors or bugs or feedback on the plot. More information about everything will be provided later on discord.

That being said, I have some good news and some bad news.

The good news is that if everything goes smoothly with the beta reading this month, the demo may be out earlier than the target deadline which was end of March. I'm hoping the demo could be out by March 7th. I'll confirm this closer to the end of February.

The bad news is that I've been hit by writer's block and too many tests/assignments, resulting in it being impossible for me to finish the Valentine's day specials before February ends. I'm still planning on posting them, but I might be pushing them into mid-March instead.

A reminder to the "the American government wouldn't..." crowd. They have. They have made their own internment camps before. They have rounded up innocent citizens and immigrants before. The victims of which are still alive to this day and trying to share their stories with the world, they have been trying to warn us for a long time. George Takei (as seen above) is a famous example of this. He has written about his experiences time and time again, even publishing a book talking about his time in these camps. He may be famous now, but at the time he was just another kid forced from his home. To this day he still firmly dedicates himself to trying to educate and inform people, trying to spread awareness with his platform. The American Government can and will do terrible things. Do not let anyone convince you otherwise.

I actually really loved the fact that this was a single RO IF because there isn't enough of that, not enough IFs or WIPs that focus on one RO and their relationship with MC. And while yes this doesn't mean that most IFs with multiple ROs are bad but this was unique and i guess i felt confident that the romancxe route will be written well and make sense in a narrative pov.

At the end of the day it's your decision and i'll continue to romance Lux no matter what, as i'm not interested in Ymeric or Cordelia as lovers.

Congratulations, anon, you just convinced me to keep this as a single RO game.

I hadn’t factored in the e uniqueness of Lux being the only romancable option. And more than that, you’re right — the more time I would have put into other romances is less time I could put into Lux’s, which is the opposite of what I want. This game was conceptualized as a single RO game, and maybe that was for a reason. I am already balancing four different relationship dynamics anyway.

Thank you to everyone who responded to my poll with asks and votes, they really did help me to make my decision. Apologies again if I seemed indecisive, but I really did want peoples’ take on this whole situation and now I have it.

TL;DR: The Brightest Stars will remain a single RO game based on all the feedback I’ve gotten.

A writer friend told me something that broke my heart a little bit today; they're going to quit publishing their fanfic.

My instant thought was that they had been trolled or attacked or that something terrible had happened in their life because this person is so passionate about their writing. It wasn't any of that. Engagement with their works has been going down, as it has for many of us. Comments are like gold dust a lot of the time, and just looking through the historical comment counts on old fics on ao3 demonstrates this trend very clearly. It was not simply the comments dropping off which caused them to decide to stop posting, however.

My friend came across a discord server for their fandom (I should point out here that their fandom interest and mine diverged a couple of years ago, we stay in touch but don't currently read each other's posts because I'm not into their fandom and they would rather gouge their eyes out with a wooden spoon than read anything Star Wars) and specifically to share fic in that fandom. They joined, because we all love a good fic rec, only to discover that their latest multichapter fic, which has almost no comments and very few kudos, is being hotly discussed in this server as one of the best stories ever. Not one of these people has bothered to say this to them on the fic. When they asked, none of participants could see the point in telling the author of the fic they apparently loved so much that they love it.

This discovery has absolutely destroyed my friend's love of sharing fic. They share because they love seeing other people's enjoyment, and fic writers do that through comments and kudos/reblogs/likes because we don't get paid. There is no literary critic writing a blog post/article about how amazing the story is for us to copy and keep/frame. There is no money from royalties. All we have are the words of the people reading our works.

Those people on that server could have taken five minutes of the time they spent gushing about how amazing my friend's story was to other people and used it to tell the one person guaranteed to want to hear that praise how much they loved it. They could have taken a moment to express their opinion to the person who spent hours upon hours plotting, writing, editing, and posting those chapters. Instead, they deprived my friend of thing that keeps them sharing their writing, and in the process have killed their love of it. My friend now feels used and unmotivated.

I won't be sharing a link to their fic, they said I could share their experience but not their identity. I know they plan to post one final chapter. I know they intend to express their hurt at being excluded from the praise for the thing they created, and I know they intend to announce that as a consequence they will not be posting for a long while, if at all.

So please, I beg you, don't hide your love of a story from the writer. It's just about the only thing we have.

You’ve never felt loved by your family before.

Born a twin but feeling more like a shadow, you’ve watched your younger brother, Nolan, receive all the love and praise you were denied. But no matter how unkind you are to him, Nolan’s loyalty and kindness towards you remains unwavering. It’s as if there’s a bond pulling you back everytime you think of leaving it all behind.

Now a mysterious illness has swept through Valorian Kingdom’s royal court, leaving many nobles, including the king at death’s door. The Oracle’s prophecy offers a single hope: the Crown Prince must gather five lost souls to join him in a dangerous journey towards Coven’s Swampy, an ominous and foreboding area hidden deep within the mystical forest.

You are chosen to be one of those five.

As you venture deep into the forest, the journey will push you to the limits of courage and loyalty, forcing you to question everything you believe about family and love. Customize your MC! Change your appearance and control your personality. MC starts out as female, but there will be transition options.

Develop relationships! There are six romanceable characters - 3 male, 2 gender selectable, and 1 non-binary. Or you can avoid romance and keep it all platonic.

Learn and improve your skills! With the option to choose to either be a mage, knight, or both, you can learn and improve your skills to become better at what you do.

Find yourself! Journey through the mystical forest to not only find a cure, but to self-discovery. There are plenty of secrets to learn about that may or may not change the way you think and feel.

With a cold demeanor, Oliver holds a strong desire to protect the people he cares about, especially those whose kindness is exploited. From a young age, Theodore’s life has been defined by duty and training. He’s mature for his age and has a tendency to act like an older brother to you and the group. He’s well disciplined and stoic, rarely having time to express vulnerability. His focus on duty has left him oblivious to romantic interest, despite his admired reputation due to his looks and status. His obliviousness goes further though, for reasons that he himself hasn’t fully discovered and understood.

Mattie | they/them | 19

Curious as ever, Mattie often gets themselves into trouble. But with their charming personality and resourcefulness, they’re able to get themselves out of trouble. They are playful, enjoying the work of teasing others and instigating drama to get chaotic, and hopefully flustered, reactions. His skills and knowledge about the forest have proven him to be a good asset, but there is more to him than what meets the eye.

For someone who is so bright and playful, they can’t surely have anything to hide, right?

Yaran/Yara | Gender Selectable | 22

Nobody is sure they know who Y is. They seem ambitious, cunning, and deceiving; doing risky things to achieve their own goals at the cost of someone else’s pain. They are unpredictable, popping in and out of your group - sometimes being a guide, but other times hindering progress. Despite their ambiguity, they are charismatic and mysterious enough to leave your group intrigued. All there is to do now is truly learn who they are and what they have hidden inside.
