anyway brb quitting my job, not paying taxes, and peeing my pants because RFK Jr. said that's what autistic people are like

just going to put my feelings about the recent RFK Jr. takes on autism here. They are absolute dogwater takes if there was ever any doubt about that. Anyway here is the fact sheet I would like to drill into this man's brain:

Autism is not a disease Autism is not contagious or infectious Autism does not destroy families Autism is not caused by vaccines Autism cannot be cured

Autism is a disability, but that's not the same thing as a disease. There is a lot that we don't know about exactly what causes autism. Our current best understanding is that it is genetic. We have done extensive research to find out if it is linked to vaccines, and have never found any evidence that it is. Many autistic people don't really care what it's caused by, though, especially because the vast majority of research attempts are done via this ableist perspective that we need to "find a cure" to prevent people from being autistic, because autism is so scary and bad and tragic.

Even though I know that this man is just saying baldfaced lies and doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about and is an idiot, to be honest it still does upset me on a personal level. Sometimes I feel guilt that my disability negatively impacts my family. My parents still provide me with support that I know other people my age don't need anymore. I feel bad about that. But I have to remind myself that my parents would never, ever, ever agree with the notion that I "destroy our family." And I have to fight the idea that my life doesn't have value if I can't live a life that matches neurotypical expectations. I do belong in the world and my life is not a tragedy or a statistic.

And it's so important to also remember the same is true for autistic people with higher support needs than I have. RFK says autistic people will never have a job or go on dates-- well, that's certainly not true about all autistic people, but it's true about some. And those people's lives have just as much inherent value as the rest of us. The decider of the value of a person's life is not whether they will pay taxes. It's so beyond fucked up to even imply that this is the case. High support needs autistic people deserve dignity and accommodations and to be treated like valuable, worthy human beings. You don't get to decide that their lives are tragedies.

I hope the worms living in this man's body eat him and he cannot go on peddling this dangerous misinformation. Get fucked.

“People disguising themselves as chimney sweepers and stealing dogs is not a rational fear,” I shout. “Literally anyone could steal your dog. Why make sweeping chimneys illegal?”

“I have a list of chimney sweeps who stole dogs from parks!” Someone yells, throwing a shoe.

“You seriously think no chimney sweepers could possibly ever steal from a home?” Another cries.

“Only a dog thief would even want to crawl into a chimney to begin with!” Says a third.

also my dumbass will start feeling nostalgic about like 2013-2015 as if I don't know full well that I was miserable during those years. I think the power of nostalgia is just so immense that I'll think about life and pop culture and the aesthetic of the early 2010s and think man that was the life. But it was not in fact the life. I was sooooo mentally unwell in middle school/early high school and I have so much written proof of that unwellness in my journals/writing as well as my literal memories but NOPE. Brain still thinks "omg 2014 fashion and the old instagram layout what a time to be alive." girl it was not a good time to be alive.

sometimes I feel like my brain will take a stab at feeling happy and think like "oh these next few weeks will be nice, I'll watch more of Grace and Frankie, I'll go for runs and take walks on the days I don't run, I'll maybe go read in the park if the weather is nice enough, and that will be lovely" but then I remember the Looming Omnipresent Dread About My Future that hangs over me at all times and prevents me from truly enjoying any of the above mentioned things
