I hope Hollywood realizes that not every sequel is good. I hope they realize that Top Gun: Maverick was such a luck of the draw film.

It’s not a cash grab film. Sure, make the case that they kept pushing it back years because of covid to make sure they had a bankable season, but I’d argue that was just to make up for the insane budget they must’ve had.

But Tom Cruise waited literal decades to make this film because he had ideas for the sequel that were so advanced, technology hadn’t caught up yet. That’s masterful dedication.

All of the plane scenes were filmed in real planes. None of that CGI stuff you’d see in marvel movies (I’m sure TG:M went through some form of digital remastering, all films do, but the core action was done practically.)

Not to mention the fact that the story actually builds on the first movie, honours Val Kilmer/Iceman in a respectable and emotional way, and expands the world of TG. You can say and think what you want about Tom Cruise, but it’s undeniable that that man is dedicated to his work 110%, from doing his own stunts to waiting until the perfect moment for a sequel.

In short: Hollywood, don’t take this movie as a sign to make sequels to everything. Leave it to the writers who know what the fans want and what they deserve, and the creators who know how to do it.
