"...Nor knowest thou what argument Thy life to thy neighbor's creed has lent: All are needed by each one, Nothing is fair or good alone." -- excerpt from the #poem Each and All by Ralph Waldo #Emerson (1899) This morning I hiked down the Canyon de Chelly to spend my time thinking about a different White House. The White House Ruins are an incredible feat of engineering. The rock face ensures it's protected from the weather, wind and time. The canyon is a Diné sacred site, and holds immense knowledge of the history of the people who have lived here for centuries --over 2500 archeological sites ranging from 1500 B.C. to 1350 A.D. and is considered one of the oldest continuously occupied sites in North America (source : US NPS). There are ancient petroglyphs visible in the center left under the ledge. Being here, it's easy to see why in traditional culture, Diné consider the animals, land and sky to be just as alive as the Five Fingered People. We must respect all life. Seeing the spectacular innovation and resilience of humanity gives me hope. We are all in this together and we better begin taking care of one another. #dine #navajo #canyondechelly #whitehouseruins #explore #history (at Canyon de Chelly, Chinle)

#Repost @everydaymigration ・・・ ⠀ Kyoung-ok massages Sarah during a sleepover at Kyoung-ok's apartment on Feb. 28, 2015 in Mia, Seoul, South Korea. Sarah has had a harder time adjusting to South Korean life and she often seeks advice and support from Kyoung-ok. The bandage on her head is from an accident she had in which she slipped at her part-time job as a barista in a cafe in Seoul. ⠀ ⠀ "I am a Tiger" by @caitlin_oh is a story about two young North Korean women rebuilding their lives in Seoul, South Korea: ⠀ Like with any country, people from North Korea are not a monolith and no one refugee experience is the same. With this work, I wanted to show the young women's independence, strength and optimism. They have had to work hard to catch up in school, make money with their family and adapt to a new culture. But here in South Korea, they have dreams, and they get to be young women. They play and study and look toward the future while remembering their past and helping each other. ⠀ ⠀ I felt it was important to give them the opportunity to drive the story and tell their stories. Because of the challenges to getting access to stories about North Korea, we don't have a lot of in-depth work that focuses on the people who are affected by North Korea—a place that is the butt of many jokes in the West, while millions are suffering. I wanted this project to focus on women who were rebuilding their communities, helping each other remember the good things about home and looking toward a future of freedom and opportunity.⠀ ⠀ #EverydayMigration #Korea #SouthKorea #DPRK #migration #refugees #defectors #humanrights #documentary #support #photography #photojournalism #home #women #friendship #everydayeverywhere #everydayasia #edmcohara⠀ (at Seoul, South Korea)

#Repost @everydaymigration ・・・ "I am a Tiger." By @caitlin_oh⠀ ⠀ Kim Kyoung-ok and her mother Tae-hee share crabs and wine ahead of Lunar New Year celebrations in January of 2015 in Changwon, South Korea. Kyoung-ok and I rode a train three hours south of Seoul where she lives to stay for the holiday weekend. This particular treat was rare back home, and her mom didn't want to waste any of it so we ate all parts of the crab, including the head, which she said to be nutrient rich. ⠀ ⠀ Tae-hee and Kyoung-ok left North Korea in 2007 to escape food insecurity and the brutal regime. They arrived safely in South Korea in 2008 after a dangerous journey through China, Cambodia and Vietnam. The majority of the estimated 27,000 North Korean refugees who have made it to South Korea are women.⠀ ⠀ One of the reason women are leaving North Korea at a higher rate than men is because fewer serve in the military and some have access to government-approved sales trips and have the opportunity to travel to China. Some decide to stay there and then make their way to other countries. Younger North Koreans are rejecting the official doctrine of the country more frequently due, in part, to more access to foreign videos and smuggled internet as well as activist radio. One young man told me that North Koreans knew pop-star Psy's Gangnam Style dance just a week after it was released and was a smash hit in South Korea. The connected world is seeping into the DPRK. ⠀ ⠀ #EverydayMigration #Korea #SouthKorea #DPRK #migration #refugees #defectors #humanrights #documentary #photography #photojournalism #home #family #mother #daughter #holiday #everydayeverywhere #everydayasia #edmcohara⠀ (at Seoul, South Korea)

#Repost @everydaymigration ・・・ "I am a Tiger." By @caitlin_oh⠀ ⠀ North Korean refugees Kyoung-ok, then-19, and Sarah (English name only used for protection), then-22, in Seoul, South Korea, on Feb. 4, 2015. Kyoung-ok zips up Sarah's coat after a night of sharing late-night food and nore-bang (singing room). The women met shortly after they each arrived in South Korea at a resettlement camp for refugees. While adjusting to life after North Korea has been challenging, their friendship is a source of strength and solidarity. ⠀ ⠀ The majority of the estimated 27,000 North Korean refugees who have made it to South Korea are women. Kyoung-ok arrived in Seoul in 2008, after escaping North Korea, hiding in a cave in China, and being smuggled through Cambodia and Thailand as a 13 year old traveling with her mother.⠀ ⠀ When asked to describe herself, Kyoung-ok said "I am a tiger. I like to think I can adapt to anything, and that maybe I can be a bit scary too." The tiger has been a symbol in Korean culture for centuries—in traditional art, it is portrayed as the entire peninsula. Not the DPRK and the ROK, but Korea. ⠀ ⠀ #EverydayMigration #Korea #SouthKorea #DPRK #migration #refugees #defectors #humanrights #documentary #photography #photojournalism #home #women #friendship #everydayeverywhere #everydayasia #edmcohara

"All the research that I did for programs and scholarships and all that, I gave it to my sister, Jazmin. I told her, “You’re the one who has papers. You were born here. You’re a citizen here. You can do whatever you want with your life. These people will help you. They can’t help me. But they can help you.” I think there could be change. Later. In the future. Well, here in Arizona, it could be a lot harder than in a lot of other places. But that doesn’t mean there won’t be any change later on. Just not for me." - Aracely Nuñez, 21, Phoenix, Arizona #nytassignment #immigration #daca #citizenship #migration (at Phoenix, Arizona)

Rosario brought Aracely to the US when she was a year old, she's never been back to Mexico and considers Arizona home. Her undocumented status made it impossible to afford school, but she hopes that Jazmin, who is a citizen, will be able to study and achieve her dreams. No. 148 “We have only a little time to please the living. But all eternity to love the dead.” - Antigone, Sophocles
my duty has always been protector of the apples; my station atop the curtain wall is high as to see the position of my enemies. the apples are not my friend, nor are they my dead kin; they are a luxury— sumptuous, shining skins sweeter even than the lotus fruit— and I will decorate my body in bruises and strings of blood before my pyre sends me skyward. i will not turn away, not until I am ready to face the darkness and whatever beasts wait beyond.
