After more playing around with ChatGPT and its knowledge of Japanese, I decided to throw a curveball at it. Specifically, this panel from the latest page:
Tumblr media
In my mind, there was absolutely no way of translating the subtext here into Japanese without sounding very forced. So I threw it at ChatGPT to see what it would say, and it confidently replied with this:
ゆかい:初めまして、ニカラさん。…奥さん? りこう:どちらでもいいわ。安全な旅を。
Immediately I found this response to be sus. First of all, some quick Google searching confirms that using はじめまして at the end of a conversation is strange, and that it would be more natural for Yukai to say something like よろしくお願いします.
But more to the point, I find it very difficult to believe that Rikou would want to be addressed as ニカラ奥さん. From what I can gather (and I might be wrong), 奥さん is generally only used relative to the spouse—e.g. if your coworker is married and you're asking about his wife. I could not find any info on 奥さん being used as a suffix at all.
Also, crucially, stating that either "Ms." or "Mrs." is fine has some pretty particular connotations that ChatGPT did not seem to pick up on. When I asked it what the implication was, it simply replied that Rikou was expressing "a flexibility or openness about how she prefers to be addressed," with no assumptions about why. Meanwhile, a human can pretty quickly guess the implication, which is that Rikou is a widow.
After grilling it further on the matter, ChatGPT stated in no uncertain terms that using 奥さん for a widow would be pretty impolite, and as such, Rikou would likely not be okay with being addressed as ニカラ奥さん. However, even with this added context, ChatGPT continued to insist on a direct translation (in a more formal tone this time for some reason):
どちらでもいいですよ。安全な旅をお祈りしています。
(Yukai's line was exactly the same)
So uh, idk ChatGPT, might have to give you the L on this one, lol

Apparently people are using A.I. for translations now, which sounds like a terrible idea to me, but it reminded me of something I wanted to try out: how well can A.I. grammar check Japanese?
(More under the cut because long)
Tumblr media
This is a panel from my attempt to translate my comic Niji Chikara into Japanese. But I wasn't too confident that the second sentence was correct:
封印が千年ごとに弱り、悪の存在が上の世界に闇の力を解放し可能だと言われています。 It is said that every one thousand years, the seal weakens, allowing the being to unleash the power of Darkness upon the world above.
So I decided to ask ChatGPT for a second opinion:
Tumblr media
So that's pretty much what I expected; it made a couple of tweaks but left the sentence mostly the same. It didn't look quite right to me, though, so I asked for the English translation:
It is said that the seal weakens every thousand years, and there is a possibility that the forces of evil may release the power of darkness into the upper world.
"There is a possibility"? That ain't right, lol. So after a bit of back and forth, I got it to give me the following sentence instead:
封印が千年ごとに弱まり、悪の存在が上の世界に闇の力を解放することが可能になると言われています。
Much better, but I still had no way of knowing if it was correct. So I asked on HiNative, and...
Tumblr media
Huzzah! Looks like ChatGPT got it right. (Although one person mentioned that they weren't sure what 上の世界 is, which is very fair because I did not include the context, lol.)
So the answer is: yes, you can use A.I. to check your grammar, but definitely fact check it first.
