little comparisons between TaZ: Balance and TaZ: Graduation
In balance, Griffin’s world is magical, for sure, but magic is sparse, we see magic in the people themselves, not so much in the fantastical worlds he creates. Refuge, Rockport, even the Crystal Kingdom are all places where the people within the worlds makes them magical.
Magnus, Taako and Merle are known as extraordinary heroes by the end of the first arc. No one else can act as a Reclaimer. Throughout the series they only grow more powerful. They are extraordinary creatures in a subjectively ordinary world.
Graduation absolutely turns that idea upside down.
Travis’ world is teeming with magic. There’s an abundance of fantastical creatures, from the baby Pegasus, the Gary hivemind, to Rainer and her magic chair, Travis makes it clear his world is arcane in every way possible. Balance, in comparison, is much more subdued.
What role the characters play is also super interesting. Fitzroy, Argo, and bud are all kind of...losers. They’re sidekicks, surrounded by superior heroes and villains, clear in the knowledge that they are in no way extraordinary. They are ordinary creatures in an extraordinary world.
I think that’s why I’m so so excited to see how the characters grow and change within the series. Their adversity is relatable, and familiar (but not too familiar 😜) and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

“Beauty Tahani wants to battle!”
“Trainer Chidi wants to battle! …Maybe? Actually, hold on, he isn’t totally sure yet. Trainer Chidi is debating the ethical implications of Pokémon battles with himself. It’s… taking a while. Maybe you should just go.
Trainer Chidi… has a stomach ache.”
“Holy shirtballs! Trainer Eleanor wants to battle!”
“Oh, dip! Trainer Jason wants to battle! “
“Trainer Janet wants to battle, and she can absolutely assure you that she does not have a Maractus!”
“Elite Four Michael wants to battle! (He’ll meet you in the dot of the “i”)”
