birthday party safety
As the summer comes into full swing, many families will turn to inflatable fun to entertain kids. As with many activities, a certain level of safety is expected. Parentsoften have concerns when it comes to renting bounce houses and waterslides. They often ask, “Is it ok to jump on inflatables in the rain or during a storm? What should we do with the bounce house with winds in excess of 15mph? And, can a bounce house be set up on concrete and still be safe?”
We turn to the experts to answer these questions. Michael Odonnell is the owner of party jumpers in Melbourne, Florida. He has been in the inflatable business for over 20 years and has some basic recommendations. Odonnell states that wind and lightening is a huge concern with inflatables. Bouncing in light rain is ok. However, never bounce with heavy rains, strong winds, and dangerous lightening. When lightening and strong winds are around, stop jumping and get indoors. It’s no secret that strong winds have been known to pickup bounce houses and carry them hundreds of yards and even place them on top of a two story building. .
So, What can you do to increase safety. Your biggest risk comes from wind. Ask your professional bounce house company to tie the inflatable to an immovable object like a large tree, fence post, telephone pole, or secured street sign. If none of these are present, tie the inflatable to a car. Just untie it before you move the car. Odonnell cautions, “Do not use sand bags to secure your party jumpers”. If strong winds can pickup 2 to 3 children in a bouncer, they can also move 50 pound sand bags.
