October 11 is National Coming Out Day. This dark, jarring piece was made to serve as a reminder for the young that never had the chance to be their true selves, symbolic of the struggles LGBT youth face in American society. The above quote is from the indie electronic band TOMBOi’s RainbowWarrior song, which also references the chapter in Leviticus (18:22) regarding homosexuality.

According to The Trevor Project, “Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among young people ages 10 to 24. LGB youth seriously contemplate suicide at almost three times the rate of heterosexual youth. LGB youth are almost five times as likely to have attempted suicide compared to heterosexual youth.” 

Gay and trans youth face a higher chance of bullying and violence by peers than heterosexual youth. LGBT victimization rate are high, with bisexual women facing the highest rates of rape, physical violence, and intimate partner violence. Many are disowned by their families; 40% of LGBT youth are homeless, with 1 in 5 being transgender youth. Only 20 states prohibit employment discrimination against sexual orientation and gender identity. As far as we have come with human rights, we could do much more. Show your support for national coming out day and your support for LGBT teens.

Cryptozoology (2015) series work in-progress.

These set of pictorial designs feature the topic of cryptozoological creatures in various settings and habitats. In the essence of the upcoming Halloween holiday, I examine the relationship between objects of the known existing world and the unseeable, proclaimed non-existing creatures that humanity fears. Mythology is one of the core aspects of human creativity, as our fears of the unknown facilitates this creative energy by incorporating elements of our known world into an ideal by creating stories and explanations of what is “out there.” Cryptozoology is how humanity pushes itself to keep searching and discovering the inexplicable through science, as we must maintain that there are many things in the world we don’t understand or know about, and in another context, how we explain our indescribable desires and fears through projection of the existence (or lack thereof) of unfounded creatures. The series will be four to five images of monsters done in traditional and digital media.
