Burnout, 2018.
Three years ago, my constantly worsening sleep deprivation and stress resulted in a burnout. Iâm 30 years old now, at the time of posting this comic, and I still havenât recovered fully. I still have the heart symptoms - even the smallest amount of stress brings the symptoms back. Itâs likely I will never recover enough to work a fulltime job again and I canât go back to high-stress environments like customer service. But thatâs alright. I am more than just my work. Iâm slowly learning to be merciful towards myself and to show myself the same kindness I show others, and I think thatâs very important.
This is my story and I wonât be ashamed any more.

I think that a worse fate than having no âthe good old daysâ would be to think that âthe good old daysâ was all there was, and itâs over.
One good thing about the unpleasantness of my past is that it gives me no reason to cling to it. If I ever need justification for willfully forgetting huge portions of it, for discarding mementos, I can say âbecause it does not bring me joyâ. I am doing myself a favor by throwing away memories soaked with emotional pain. I am healing by letting go. It is freedom.
It is the freedom to turn away from what used to be, to discard the anchors of the past, and turn toward a future I build myself. One in which I am stronger, more comfortable, calmer. One which brings me joy.
I strive never to look back on the past and say âthose were the good old days.â I want to look at the present and say âthese are the good old days.â
And then look at the future and add âand itâs going to get even better.â

Did you know? You can buy wild rice direct from Native folks!
Wild rice isnât actually rice-itâs a grass seed that grows naturally in lakes in Minnesota and Wisconsin, and itâs been an indigenous staple food for many, many centuries. Although some corporations have taken and grown âwild riceâ in paddies, it is not the same thing- it is actually a hybrid seed that is not the same quality and often sold for a higher price anyways.
Not only is the wild rice a sacred food, but is a form of Indigenous science that lets you know how healthy the water is (or isnât), because water is life and affects the health of all people, plants, and animals that live with it. This has been belatedly acknowledged by very recent research from the University of Minnesota that the health of the wild rice can predict all health of lakes and streams.
I buy my wild rice from the Red Lake Nation and the White Earth Nation.
The cool thing about buying from the White Earth Nation is that they also have videos showing the traditional processes involved in harvesting and parching the rice, and they offer stuff like gift baskets, chokecherry preserves, maple candy, soup & pancake mix, and cookbooks which make great gifts!
What I like about buying from the Red Lake Nation is there is a massive variety and quantity of different wild rice products at many different prices! They are aware that the broken grains are not as quality, but it doesnât go to waste-you can buy the broken grains for âSoup Bitsâ ($3.49) which are an inexpensive way to add flavor & nutrition to soups and stews. They also offer âQuick Cookâ wild rice ($5.69), which is prepared from a lighter roast/parch process that allows the grains to cook in a shorter amount of time and has a rich, traditional flavor.
You can also buy syrups and jellies made from hand harvested hawthorn, chokecherry, and highbush cranberry there.
BUT! If youâre worried about shipping costs or like me, are disabled/have limited mobility and canât always get to the store like you might prefer,Red Lake Nation also sells their rice through Amazon, eligible for Prime shipping. This is also good for those, Native or not, who are struggling in the community and share their wishlists for help purchasing food.(Also please know this post is only meant to share information, not to make anyone feel bad or imply theyâre eating âinferiorâ food.)
If youâre interested in finding out what other nations cultivate and sell/trade wild rice, thereâs a partial list here of where you can buy hand-harvested wild rice from native people in the Great Lakes region

depression tipsâ˘
shower. not a bath, a shower. use water as hot or cold as u like. u dont even need to wash. just get in under the water and let it run over you for a while. sit on the floor if you gotta.
moisturize everything. use whatever lotion u like. unscented? dollar store lotion? fancy ass 48 hour lotion that makes u smell like a field of wildflowers? use whatever you want, and use it all over.Â
put on clean, comfortable clothes.Â
put on ur favorite underwear. cute black lacy panties? those ridiculous boxers u bought last christmas with candy cane hearts on the butt? put em on.
drink cold water. use ice. if u want, add some mint or lemon for an extra boost.
clean something. doesnât have to be anything big. organize one drawer of ur desk. wash five dirty dishes. do a load of laundry. scrub the bathroom sink.Â
blast music. listen to something upbeat and dancey and loud, something thatâs got lots of energy. sing to it, dance to it, even if you suck at both.
make food. donât just grab a granola bar to munch. take the time and make food. even if itâs ramen. add something special to it, like a hard boiled egg or some veggies. prepare food, it tastes way better, and youâll feel like you accomplished something.Â
make something. write a short story or a poem, draw a picture, color a picture, fold origami, crochet or knit, sculpt something out of clay, anything artistic. even if you donât think youâre good at it.
go outside. take a walk. sit in the grass. look at the clouds. smell flowers. put your hands in the dirt and feel the soil against your skin.
call someone. call a loved one, a friend, a family member, call a chat service if you have no one else to call. talk to a stranger on the street. have a conversation and listen to someoneâs voice. if you canât, text or email or whatever, just have some social interaction with another person. even if you donât say much, listen to them.
cuddle your pets if you have them/can cuddle them. take pictures of them. talk to them. tell them how u feel, about your favorite movie, a new game coming out.

Hey guys, just a warning because I feel like this bot is targeting LGBT tagged items. If you get a message like this one, you wonât be able to view the post if you click because it will send you to an endless log in screen or tell you you need to follow the person to see their stuff. Itâs a dummy account.
The message is designed to be upsetting so you will want to click it and see the contents.
I was upset enough to click but luckily I was in the app so i knew it didnât make sense to ask me to log in again. I then looked CLOSELY at the log in page and realized the url is fake. This is a phishing attempt and I donât want any other lgbt people to be taken in by it. Be careful out there.
(People are saying that if you do indeed click and give your password, your account may be used to spread the virus, so be cautious of that as well)

Why is it sad that tumblr has implemented its policy. If people started pasting sex ads in your books in book stores, would that be okay with you? If your publisher had a policy against it would you say itâs sad? I get frustrated with NSFW tumblrs when they follow my pop culture tumblr. I know they are not interested in comics or movie reviews and when I block them Iâve had to see some pretty disgusting photos and videos.
Because tumblr isnât a book of mine. Itâs, at its best, a community, which includes a number of things, and sexuality is one of the things it includes.
Iâve got about 400,000 people following me here, and Iâve never stopped to investigate what any of them are or what they like. But sometimes Iâll click on the tumblr of someone whoâs asked a good question or reblogged with an interesting comment, and found myself in very NSFW places. So assuming that people who like pop culture cannot also like nakedness, sex, or figuring out their sexuality in a safe space, would seem to me like a misguided assumption.
I was impressed by this piece on Medium today: https://medium.com/@vexashley/porn-on-tumblr-a-eulogy-love-letter-6d45e70fefff which is far more knowledgeable about these things than I am.

I actually feel sorry for the likely unpaid intern sitting at tumblr HQ dealing with all our bullshit and snark while those actually in charge watch the world burn from a safe distance and blame it on us damn kids not buying more products. Because ultimately this is what this about. Verizon needs to make money from Tumblr, and Verizon canât make money cause Apple says âno adult contentâ and Apple has a stranglehold on the app market.
The fact that a lot of us use tumblr to host our own services and products as independent creators, often as our only source of income, is irrelevant to them. The fact that to many of us this is our community is meaningless to them. Weâre acceptable collateral damage to furthering corporate greed and thatâs the fucking tea on that.
Also to the hypothetical unpaid intern: leave, sweety. You can do better, and youâre worth so much more.

I managed to get a couple of paintings by John William Waterhouse flagged. The women were all fully clothed, too. Heckuva job, Tumblr!
(Psyche Entering the Gate to Cupidâs Garden, and Ophelia, if youâre curious. The algorithm seems to pay attention to large photos with two flesh-toned crooked elbows in frame, for some reason.)

Please donât fucking log off tumblr on the 17th as a protest. All thatâs going to do is give tumblr more reason to shut this place down because of revenue loss.

For everyoneâs information:
The plan for the 17th, when the adult content ban comes in, is to protest.
To do that, we are making as much noise either side of the 17th as possible, and using the site as normal.
On the 17th, dead silence.
People are saying log off but what they really mean is donât open the site or the app.
But, on the 17th make as much noise as possible on every other platform. Tweet about it and post on facebook and instagram and everywhere else.
What this does is causes a massive dip in ad revenue for one single day. That does not make staff think âoh everyoneâs gone letâs shut down.â What it actually makes them think is âoh shit people arenât happy and if people donât keep using our site weâre out of money and out of jobs.â
A boycott reminds a company that the users (consumers) have the power to make their site (business) worthless with one single coordinated decision.
If you want to join in, hereâs what to do:
Do:
Close all open instances of the app and site on all your devices before the 17th
Make posts before and after the 17th on tumblr and other platforms, talking about why this ban is bad
Make posts on other sites during the 17th. Flood the official tumblr staff twitter and facebook with your anger and your opinion
Come back on the 18th and check in
Donât:
Delete the app from your phone (this doesnât affect their revenue and since itâs off the store at the moment itâll be hard to get back)
Delete your account. I mean you can if you want to, but if you keep your account and donât use it youâre saying to staff that thereâs still time to save it. If you delete itâs hard work to come back.
Open the app or website (including specific blogs)
Make any posts (turn down/off your queue and make sure nothing is scheduled)
Go quiet elsewhere. Make it clear that this is just about tumblr, not a mass move away from all social media.
Remember: the execs donât care about anything but money. Shutting down the site means thereâs $0 further income from it. Thatâs their last possible course of action. If we make it clear weâre not happy, theyâll have to do something or we can do more and more until it becomes too expensive.
Protests take commitment. Theyâre a defiant action against a business that is doing something wrong. They will try to scare you into not participating, because theyâre scared. We hold all the power here, sometimes the execs just need to be reminded of that.
