Is this 1953? Oh, but this is a brilliant year, classic! Technicolor, Everest climbed! Everything off the ration! A nation throwing off the shackles of war and looking forward to a happier, brighter future!

aziraphale’s dramatics over the ruination of his coat is met ONLY by crowley’s dramatics in leaning in to very gently blow the stain away. aziraphale could’ve done it himself. crowley could’ve just snapped his fingers or even less. but!! look. aziraphale has JUST been overwhelmed to speechless by a feeling of love, huge, pervasive love, and what does he do? doe eyes and a ‘oh whatever SHALL i do’ which is a long game he’s been playing for centuries, and crowley!! MEETS HIM!! does not just save the coat but leans in and blows very gently over aziraphale’s shoulder, and this does not get enough play, but if you watch him do this, the blue lifts from aziraphale’s shoulder at the same time the red paint lifts from crowley’s chest. crowley’s shirt is gaping open and he takes the shot not just to the chest but all the way down to the skin, right after aziraphale has basically said, don’t you feel that, it feels like love, and crowley says “what do you mean,” as if he can’t feel it. then aziraphale puts on all this show, and as crowley blows over aziraphale, you can see his figurative heart (it’s even black and red, instead of just the red paint we see before) blowing toward aziraphale too.

it’s a display as much as aziraphale’s plea was, and aziraphale actually is a little taken aback and very pleased by how much of a reciprocation it is. so really, aziraphale did this deliberately not just to get crowley to do something nice but also so that he could be like “yeah, THAT, that’s what i mean by it feels like love” and so crowley could be like “yeah i know what THAT feels like, i just don’t feel it here.” aziraphale has been finding ways to confess himself for decades without actually saying the words and putting it all on the line - see 1967, where aziraphale is willing to act to save crowley but can’t take it to the next step - and crowley knows that and plays along with this very long game of charades because what else do you do! what else do you do but to lean in and blow gently over his shoulder to save his favourite coat so that he can remind you and you can remind him that yes, even without words, this is love.
then you turn around and have the “deep down you’re nice”/“I’m not nice” which is imo a product of crowley’s terror that aziraphale might actually Say something in a place where hell has been known to have a presence, which will get them both into deep trouble (see: 1605, 1862) coupled with an elaborate ritual which allows him to touch aziraphale, in a display in which aziraphale is so unafraid and understanding that a third-person can identify it as an intimate moment and not an actual fight. that’s all then reinforced by the next scene of high domesticity when they hit anathema, followed by crowley watching aziraphale eat, and then it’s disturbed when aziraphale finds the book in crowley’s car and ultimately completely thrown over by aziraphale’s choosing heaven over crowley and the breakup at the bandstand. aziraphale says “it’s over.” he’s not just talking about the flouncing about on earth. he means them. “i don’t even like you” and crowley says “you do,” because crowley knows it and they’re out of time to be playing these games, but aziraphale breaks up with him instead of capitulating. it’s excrutiating. i can’t believe they’ve done this.
and this i’ve said before but it follows directly so i’m just going to repeat it. the bandstand break-up is the culmination of the struggle aziraphale has been undergoing really since eden, where aziraphale’s faith and loyalty to heaven and to crowley really butt up against one another. they both know, but they can’t say, because aziraphale is an angel and crowley is a demon and aziraphale doesn’t want to fall, even though he can see that there are things wrong in heaven. and crowley gets that. that’s why it’s so important that tv crowley has this whole extra narrative re: falling, because that’s what gives him the patience and understanding to wait for aziraphale endlessly - right up until the end when they’re out of time, when crowley tries to force a “me or heaven” decision, and aziraphale isn’t ready for it. once aziraphale speaks to the metatron though, he sees that his loyalty has been misplaced. heaven won’t be what he wants it to be, and he’s messed up. he reaches immediately for crowley. the scene at the bar is an apology and a plea for forgiveness through action, and crowley grants it without hesitation. “wherever you are, i’ll come to you, where are you.”
tl;dr they are in love and they both know it. they know it.

For those of you who haven’t yet seen it, this Doctor Who themed skit by Catherine Tate and David Tennant is possibly my favourite thing the BBC has ever done.
