The hallways of Tommen College were as chaotic as ever—students shoving past each other, shouting over the din, the scent of expensive perfume mixing with damp jerseys filling the air. Rugby lads swaggered down the corridors like they owned the place, their presence impossible to ignore.

I walked through it unnoticed.

Not that I minded.

I kept my head down, hair falling like a curtain around my face, shielding me from the world. My bracelets clinked softly as I pulled the sleeves of my jumper down further, a nervous habit I hadn’t been able to shake. The weight of my schoolbag dragged on my shoulder, but I barely felt it. Compared to the weight pressing down on my chest, it was nothing.

"Oi, Y/N!"

I turned just in time for Claire Biggs to throw an arm around my shoulders. She smelled like strawberry lip gloss and coconut shampoo, the familiar scent comforting my nerves.

"Why do you always look like you're tryna disappear?" she asked, giving my shoulder squeeze.

I forced a small smile. "Maybe I'm just good at it."

Claire rolled her eyes. "Yeah, well, not while I'm around."

Beside her, Shannon Lynch gave me a shy smile, her small frame practically swallowed by her uniform jumper. She was a master at making herself look small like she wanted to blend into the wall. A skill I was intimately familiar with. Despite that, her midnight blue eyes and plump lips kept all the boys' eyes on her, something I could never do.

"Come on," Lizzie Young piped up from my other side, her hair a mess like she just got out of bed, twirling a pen between her ring-covered fingers. "Gibsie’s waiting for us. Probably annoying the life out of Johnny."

I nodded, letting them pull me along through the crowd. It was easy to follow, easier than speaking up.

We reached the cafeteria, where the usual chaos reigned—lads throwing food, girls huddled in groups, whispering behind their hands. And in the middle of it all, Gerard “Gibsie” Gibson stood on a chair, dramatically reciting what sounded like a rugby commentary.

Johnny Kavanagh sat beside him, looking unimpressed, arms crossed over his broad chest.

"Jesus wept, would you sit down you bleedin' eejit?" Johnny muttered, grabbing Gibsie’s sleeve and yanking him down.

Gibsie flopped into his seat with a dramatic sigh. "You're such a killjoy."

His eyes lit up when he saw me. I was Gibsies favorite person to tease, well second, Claire had first place but that's because he's in love with her. I never knew why he spoke to me, I guess I've grown to deal with it, even enjoying it. "Ah, there's my favorite mystery girl! Come, sit, tell me about your day."

I slid into the seat beside him, grateful for the warmth of familiarity.

Johnny’s gaze flickered over to me for a fraction of a second, his sharp blue eyes meeting mine, before he returned to whatever he was eating.

He never looked at me for long. None of them did.

And maybe that was for the best.

Because if they looked too closely, they might see the cracks beneath the surface.
