Mom's fried rice. Always good. And let's face it: I can't cook!

Finally decided to have a healthy breakfast! Cherry tomato spaghetti! And the best part? The tomatoes are juicy and sweet. Yum!

We went to the Nan Bei Imperial Treasures restaurant in Tampines One. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. I loved loved the onion noodles at. Imperial Treasures in Takashimaya and we were hoping that the branch in Tampines One would have it too. The menu at the one in Tampines One did not have any pictures so we picked a dish of noodles that we thought sounded like the one at Takashimaya. No dice. I wasn’t the right dish. In fact, it looked and tasted like dried instant kuay teow. Disappointing right? We also ordered a steamed chicken dish infused with black mushrooms. That, at least, was slightly better. Anyway, I don’t think we will be in a rush to go back there anytime soon.

I’m not gonna lie. This dish totally skeeved me out when my hubby first introduced me to it years ago. It’s a regional specialty that his family’s been making for generations.
What is it?
Virgin Boy Eggs — a.k.a. Urine-Soaked Eggs.
Yep — this is an actual springtime Chinese…

Last week, Auntie D invited us out to lunch at a restaurant called Imperial Treasures at Takashimaya. Apparently there are two versions of this restaurant--one is a more casual setting versus a more formal (ie expensive one). We went to the casual one because well..its us :) Anyway, this one is located on the top floor, nearer to the side of the shopping center closer to Wisma Atria.
It isn't exactly cheap...but the food is good! Auntie D wanted to go there namely because she really likes their onion noodles and wanted to see if mom would be able to replicate it after tasting it. And man, are those noodles good. They are light, non greasy, but full of flavor! The chicken noodles (the soup was really really good) was $12 while the onion noodles were $10. I would say that the portion is sufficient for one person only but between the three of us, we shared those two bowls. We also ordered several other side dishes so we were quite content (ok, very full) by the end of the meal.
We also tried their cream puffs (the one with the white coating on the last picture). It has bananas and sweet red beans in it for fillings) and the yellow mustard bun was absolutely delicious! The service was so-so, especially if you consider that this is considered to be one of the higher end restaurants in the country. The staff was pleasant enough, but they were often quite loud, and they were so quick to remove the dishes from the table, it almost bordered on rude.
Will probably come back (on a special occasion) for the noodles and the mustard cream bun. Hopefully, the service will be better next time!

After going to the Guan Yin temple in Bugis and eating yet another bowl of Heng Heng fishball noodles, I was full and did not think I would be able to eat lunch. However, after a mere 2 hours, my poor stomache was making its discontent known and so we had to have tea. But before that, I had to have my EZLink card changed. I think those cards need to be changed every 5 years and while I'm hazy about the time, the card looked worn out and since AT was hard at work at Bedok Interchange to do a mass exchange of EZLink cards, we went there to change the cards and use up the $10 Swissbake gift certificate.
I don't think I've ever had the pleasure of eating there. The prices are fairly reasonable I suppose. I mean, 12 Cupcakes demands a princely sum of $4.50 for a cupcake. Swissbake happened to be on sale this weekend and it was $7 for 2 slices of cake. We also ordered a cup of mango soda. I didn't think the mango soda was very good. I suppose if I had a bottle of vodka handy, I might have tried to enhance its taste with the vodka. Unfortunately, this is real life and in Singapore where even a fairly passable bottle of table wine costs $25, I'm not likely to be carrying vodka bottles on me, am I? The chocolate cake itself was ok. I don't think its cake that I would go buy on purpose. Or even cake that I would seek out. But I suppose if it was a hot day, and I was looking for some place to sit and relax and had to buy something for the privilege, this really wasn't that bad of a choice either.

Does anyone know what else can be done with the filling from mincemeat pie other than putting it in well, a pie? Can I use it as a flavoring or something for cooking chicken or something?

Its been a while since our last visit to Johor Bahru but yesterday Aunt J called and asked if we would like to go. It was too hot, really, to do anything productive. She sold mom on the idea by telling her that they were going to try to find a good hairdresser there.
So, around 3pm, we stood in the hot sun in Queen Street for the express JB bus. The drive up there was really quite nice. No jam but the drive back was horrible. The traffic jam was terrible and we couldn't figure out why until this morning. There was a newspaper report about a man who drove the Woodlands checkpoint. The jam was probably because of that. The second security breach at the checkpoint. And the alleged terrorist angle with the MAS crash probably didn't help matters.
Anyway, after AT saw the ophthalmologist, we went to dinner at Dragon-i. After that horrible dinner at Jumbo, I needed something to replace the horrible meal. The spinach with egg dish was quite good (I thought) and the fried rice was pretty good too, but not as good as Din Tai Fung. The xiao long bao was also passable, but again, not as good as Din Tai Fung. We also ordered the sweet and sour pork which was actually quite good. I just think its funny how sweet and sour pork is an American dish but it has now become something that is on almost every Asian chinese restaurant menu.
The meal wasn't terribly expensive (I think!). Aunt J did not think that the service was very good and I have to admit that although it wasn't as terrible as Jumbo, it did leave quite a lot to be desired. The waiters seemed to be quite well versed in the art of playing deaf most of the time. But we got our food in an adequately timely manner so I suppose we can't complain too much.
