Please go look up the word submission no matter how much y’all want it to mean something else it’s dehumanizing. “Yielding to a superior force or to the authority or will of another person” ….What brothas really want is respect and to be trusted to lead . We should push for that instead of submission . White men want submission. We have to let go of white patriarchy ideas . Here’s the scene:

It’s 2018,

Summer, Brooklyn NY,

AfroPunk, Erykah Badu is on stage

Janelle Monae is hugging her from behind throughout her entire stage presence

Erykah gives thanks to the ancestors and starts playing instruments, the stage glows green

The entire crowd is in a trace

She asks how old we are and if there’s anyone in the audience who is younger than her Baduizm Album that was released in 1997

The crowd screams, I was 7, my auntie gave me the album as a gift and my listening ear was never the same

I’m in VIP, Gina Yashere is dancing right next to me with her friends, it’s made because I grew up watching her on “The Real McCoy” show

The DJ mixes into a new song and into of “On and On” plays

The crowd goes wild and starts humming and swaying left to right, along with the music

In that moment I feel complete community love

I’m reminded that in 1997 when Erykah was recording this album, she must’ve manifested for her project to have longevity and to be loved by millions (like every artist does)

21 years later,

Children younger than her album are singing every song, word for word. We were simply playing a role in her manifestation.
