For my first experiment I chose to experiment with CC Particle World on Adobe After Effects. Using the reds and yellows I created particles drilling a hole into the ground and used greens and browns to make it look like the ground was being dug into and sspread.

Illustrated Dissatation
Tim Burton had worked for a short time in Disneys animation Department. He liked the idea of mixing darkness and happiness in their animations. He also liked how Disney was able to create animations which brought children and adults together.
Tim Burton’s films move away from the Disney films but become dark and gothic an aspect similar to that in German expressionistic films.  Another one of his influences was Edgar Allen Poe who was a writer best known for his work within the gothic genre. Influenced by one of Edgar Allen Poe’s poems “The Raven,” Tim Burton then created a short film called “Vincent,” the tale of a young boy with a dark imagination.  He uses elements such as dark lighting and shadows to create an eerie feel. He also uses distorted shapes to reflect how people in the story would feel about his “distorted” imagination. Using items much bigger than the boy suggesting that it isn’t something someone as young as him would think about.
In “Edward Scissor hands,” the idea of mixing darkness and happiness in a film is prevalent but not in the way that he admired Disney’s use of this technique. In the film when looking at the mis-en-scene we can see a clear difference between the bold, and colourful area with clean cut shapes and the darker area where the main character “Edward” lives with more obscure shapes and darker lighting. This interests the audience as we get to see how two completely opposite worlds interact with one another.
In “Nightmare before Christmas,” he again takes the Disney influenced idea of mixing darkness with happiness but making it darker. He takes a character from a ghoulish and gothic world within the film and mixes it with a Christmas atmosphere with bright colours and a range of shapes giving the film a childlike feel. This is similar to “Edward Scissor hands,” but unlike this film, both the bright, Christmas world and the ghoulish world contain happiness yet this is expressed in a different way.By using stop motion animation he gives a childish feel to something we’d normally consider to be frightening.
His works aren’t doesn’t always contain dark elements as obvious as Nightmare Before Christmas or Edward Scissor hands. In Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory the colours are bright and bold to reflect a happy atmosphere opposite of the gloomy world outside the factory. This is mentioned in the original book by Roald Dahl but is exaggerated in the film to emphasise the world Willy Wonka lives in. The darker and more sinister elements of the film are reflected in the actions of the characters and within the script.

Little Big Love. Directed by Thomas Mankovsky
Little Big Love is the short film I studied during my first year of MIA. I chose this film as I was interested in the way the director put emotion into inanimate objects and how he was able to convey this emotion without any speech, focusing on actions and movement.
