I can’t explain my love for jackalopes except to say I find them to be the most charmingly pointless mythical creature of North America. A rabbit with antlers stuck on. No abilities either, but they “bring good luck.” There’s something underdog-ish about them. Just little guys

The first finished commission of 2023, finally posted. This is a portrait of my uncle Tom. I had a great time working on this one and tweaking the signature style of these portrait commissions.

(If you wanna get technical, my self-portrait/the first in this series was entirely very detailed hard shading except for the eyes and some sneaky stuff I pulled with the hair. In this one, I leaned into the combination of soft and hard shading, which you can see in the cheeks, neck, and especially the jacket. In my early teenage art days, soft shading was a hell of a crutch, protecting me from learning anything meaningful about light and shadow. I’ve been afraid to go back to it, and you can see that in all my post-2017 work.)

For less technical fun facts, I can tell you

1. I struggled for weeks with the beard and ended up tweaking it digitally

and

2. this one, like the self portrait, was sneakily scanned with the computer downstairs at work because the local library cannot be trusted.

I used to make art in high school. Then I stopped. Then, in 2017, I started sometimes sorta kinda making more. This is everything I’ve made since then, plus the last drawing I completed before I stopped (the first one).

Shadowboxer

I’ve been in isolation for coronavirus since New Year’s Day. This photo was made last night after I started dancing to Shadowboxer by Fiona Apple while doing the dishes. I’ve been dressing nice to keep myself sane. The version of me that goes outside had long since forgotten the simple joy of dancing in a dark window wearing a spinny skirt.
