I needed to put all my reading resources in one place lol

Tadoku - free books from beginner to advanced aimed at language learners. The books from level 0 - 4 contain furigana.

YomuJP - More free japanese graded reading material. N6 is the easiest and N1 is the hardest. Contains audio, furigana and pictures.

Jgrpg Sakura - Japanese graded reading material. You need to create an account first though

Watanoc - Web magazine aimed at language learners in easy japanese. N5-N3. Contains audio, pictures and you can hover over unknown words to reveal the meaning.

Soseki Product - This website is dedicated to the works of Natsume Sōseki and it's also aimed at language learners so there's furigana, audio and translation. These novels are from the 1900s so it might be a bit difficult but I think it's really fun

MeikaSensei - Blog posts aimed at beginners. There's beginner versions and intermediate versions of the same post. Contains furigana

Bunsuke - Contains excerpts from books with translations and vocabulary lists. Also has links to the books used. Made by a fellow language learner :)

Ehon - Picture books aimed for 0-6 year olds. Doesn't seem to contain kanji. Some books contain audio

Lingual ninja - This website is for learning hiragana/katakana/grammar/vocab/kanji but it also has a folktales section that contains audio, vocab lists and optional furigana. There's also youtube videos of each story available

yomou syosetu - Over a million free novels! I believe a lot of it is user-submitted works

Syosetsu - Similar to the above.

Bookwalker (jp) - You can read the first few volumes of manga for free here. There's also light novels and doujinshi

Aozora Bunko - digital library that contains a lot of out of copyright books

Scanned book : にほんちずえほん (Japan illustrated map)

A book for kids about Japan geography, each page is dedicated to a prefecture and everything is written with hiragana and pictures help a lot to understand words. Sentences are also easy to understand and are adapted for N5 learning people.

It's also a good resource if you want to learn more about japan prefectures, cities and local facts.

I will scan and post pages, with their translation and vocabulary.

I choose Narita prefecture as a 1st page because it's a main access to Japan as a foreigner with the なりたくうこう (Narita Airport) :)

Each page of the book has always the same presentation with the name of the prefecture (けん), the number of inhabitants (じんこう) and the area (めんせき).

しょうゆ : soy sauce

ちばし : Chiba city

なりたこくさいくうこう (Narita International Airport)

なりたしにあるよ。ここからたくさんのひこうきががいこくやこくないをいったりきたりするよ。

It's in the city of Narita. From here, many planes leave and arrive from foreign countries or the interior of Japan.

らっかせい : peanuts

晴耕雨読　(sei-kō-u-doku)  “in fine weather do work; when it's rainy, read”

晴 = sunny

耕 = ploughing

雨 = rainy

読 = reading

The message here seems to be to do everything at its proper time.

Work when it’s sunny, and rest when it rains.

This is a special kind of Japaneses idiom known as a 四字熟語 (よじじゅくご、yo-ji-juku-go), or 4-character idiom. As the name suggests, these are idiomatic phrases made of 4 kanji.

They often contain a small life lesson or moral message, similar to English sayings such as “you reap what you sow” and “the early bird gets the worm”.

Learning Japanese as an anime fan can be difficult because there’s a lot of negativity thrown around towards people who “are just learning Japanese because of anime”. Personally, I find this very demotivating and I’m sure many other people do because yes, anime is a large part of why I want to learn Japanese.

So I want to pass on a piece of advice that has stuck with me for years. I don’t actually remember where I heard it.

*there is no bad motivation to learn a language*

Languages connect people and that is inherently a good thing. If something inspires you to learn, don’t think twice about if you’re learning it for the right reason just enjoy the process. Worst case scenario you have an increased knowledge of other cultures and ability to communicate.

Note: This word is usually written in hiragana because both of the kanji are difficult. But I firmly believe that even if the kanji is rare, you never know when it might crop up so you might as well familiarize yourself with it. 

Despite the kanji being difficult, this is actually a common word. I’d say I hear it at least once a week.

On-yomi: u Kun-yomi: none Meaning: roundabout way

闊

On-yomi: katsu Kun-yomi: hiro.i Meaning: wide

The first kanji is also used in the common word 迂回 ukai, which means “u-turn” or “about face.” 

According to the Japanese etymology sites I looked at, 迂闊 is also a word in Chinese, in which it means “indirect” or “distant and useless.” (I’d love it if someone could verify this for me btw!) In Japanese, the meaning has shifted from the original Chinese meaning to a description of someone whose thoughts wander, who is undisciplined, and who is prone to making mistakes due to their thoughtlessness.

Sentence:

めちゃくちゃ - example 1. (absurd) この食べ物はめちゃくちゃ美味しいんですよ。- translation: this food is absurdly delicious. example 2. (messy) この部屋はめちゃくちゃなので、片付けなくてはいけません。- translation: I have to clean this room, because this room is a mess.

いじめる - 高校の時、私はキムさんにいじめられちゃった。- translation: when I was in high school, I was bullied by Kim.

着替える - 家に着いたら、着替えるつもりです。- translation: when I arrive home, I plan to change clothes.

貯める - 貯める人はお金がたくさんあります。- translation: people who save money have lots of money.

続ける - 日本語の勉強を続けます。 - translation: I will continue to study Japanese.

褒める - ふだん、弟をたくさん褒めます。 - translation: I usually praise my younger brother a lot.

出す - 冷蔵庫からお菓子を出してくれる？ - translation: Will you take out the snacks out from the refrigerator for me?
