i know the formatting of nfrtg is kind of unconventional, like No i did not in any way invent the concept of a web novel but it's definitely not as common a medium of storytelling as a webCOMIC or just a plain old novel etc etc and so i realize it can be a little unfamiliar to jump in and know exactly what to expect from it

there's definitely ways i can make certain things clearer and i LOVE to get that feedback, so thank you all so much

i also just want to say that nfrtg is purposefully episodic, and like all good episodic storytelling it's kind of a test of patience and perseverance, and an investment of interest!

i keep thinking about how severance is like Thee television show rn and how it is notoriously vague and confusing, constantly throwing you curveballs and new information to add to the pile of Information and WOW i am in no way saying nfrtg is on par with something like that, but i'm drawing the comparison to just be like. hey i promise it'll be worth it! storytelling isn't fun if it's not worth it! i value my readers' time and reward patience and curiosity. if something isn't immediately apparent, there's a good chance (i would say 98% chance! i'm a THOROUGH dramaturg!) that it's like that on purpose!

and so sometimes you may ask me questions and my answer will be a big shrug! not because i don't know the answer but because i want u to trust that i DO know, and that i recognize that you ALSO want to know, and we will go on this journey together :)

i love to share things about newf that are entirely irrelevant to nfrtg, like his favorite so-and-so or things he might've gotten up to before the events of the story! but if it gets into that territory of things that will be brought up in the story itself, my lips r sealed and i hope that can be fun and not frustrating :)

it is Not an ARG and i will never hide any details that are directly relevant to the story. but if u like a little extra sauce—that is, little character details/facts/whatever—they’re there for you :)

hi i jusr read nfrtg last night and it gave me such a weird ominous feeling, like “oh shit was I suppose to read that i don’t think I shoulda come across that”. it’s very good thank you. um im sorry for the really stupid question but Inever heard the word geocache before until I read nfrtg. I googled it to learn more context about it and I’m really confused . What is a “catch”? And what do the different bingo cards mean? I read the convo between newf and west several times and i still dont understand or is this something that will be explained later? I apologize English isn’t my first language and googling geocatch didnt help me. thank you for your beautiful work!

i’ve been getting that feedback Quite a bit and it’s no one’s fault but my own that it’s so confusing! so lemme explain a lil better:

so the phrase “GeoCatch” that people keep referring to in nfrtg is completely fictional! and as of right now, the reader is NOT supposed to completely know what GeoCatch is for suspense purposes 🤧 the bingo boards are part of the gameplay, though we haven’t gotten a full explanation as to how yet.

without spoiling the whole idea, here is the information we have so far:

CrowdSauce (“CS”) hosts a community game called GeoCatch (“GC”)

There is a GC livestream that starts at midnight PST that people watch (it’s implied that this is a big event and people often watch the stream with friends, host parties, etc)

Players make bingo boards that somehow relate to the livestream—they fill them out (try to get bingo) based on what happens onscreen during the livestream, hence why every person has a different bingo board

There is a singular “Catch” and multiple “Catchers” involved in the game—the “Catch” is highly sought after, as having possession of it allows the Catcher to essentially control the game somehow

There is a cash prize that accumulates through bets leading up to the livestream, awarded to and split amongst the people who win GC

For legal reasons, CrowdSauce does NOT condone or allow betting on GeoCatch and will actively delete any links to betting sites

There is a tracker that charts the location of the Catch, but it’s not always accurate since it’s maintained by users based on rumors of the Catch’s location

“GeoCatch” is just a funny lil play on “geocache” which is a very real thing! (i used to geocache a lot lmao 🤓) so i understand that must’ve been confusing to try and look up.

i’m so sorry for making it confusing, and i’m Also sorry for making it seem like you’re missing something! as nfrtg progresses things will become more and more clear i promise!!!

it’s intentionally vague and missing pieces rn :) there’s some conclusions that can be drawn from stuff i’ve put on the site so far but it will be built upon as the story goes! you’re not missing anything dont worry!

Would u consider nfrtg to be part of the splatterpunk genre?

i fink so maybe! splatterpunk the genre has i think maybe diverged into two separate paths these days, and so i think there are different expectations of the genre that different people have. i am definitely of the mind that the Punk in splatterpunk has to like. MEAN it. and i am definitely committed to nfrtg not just being a yucky story for the sake of being yucky (though there’s absolutely merit in that and a place for that!!!) like. there is some conclusion that is to be drawn from the stuff being written about in here u know. my opinions on internet culture and the impact its had on society and politics and Everything is very much in the soul of nfrtg.

ive been using “extreme horror” because i see a lot more people Also using that these days for things like this—i think that’s the divide, is there’s a certain expectation that splatterpunk will be more content-driven than story-driven, and nfrtg has just so much story in it. but all this to say, yeah probably! maybe! who knows!

so many things! so so many! i am truly a child of internet depravity so naturally a lot of nfrtg comes from just having existed on the worst sites of the web for so long, the high i would get from seeing absolutely abhorrent shit, etc etc — the banner ads in particular are trying to evoke the same feeling i had when i would go on bestgore and see porn ads and be like huh. hmm. what an interesting melding of the minds.

UHMMMM vivian’s ghost by hal schrieve and what happens next by maximumgraves !!!!! are HUGE sources of inspo!!! also amazing comics that everyone should read

FLUIDS BY MAY LEITZ!!!! and literally everything may posts on youtube. like where would i be without her content. incredible author—i read fluids and was like “oh yeah this is everything ive ever wanted in a book”

and then nfrtg was already well underway when i discovered sad sack by @barbatusart and @meanbossart and it really. really changed me. definitely impacted how i approach the more upsetting stuff in nfrtg. sad sack is incredible and i still think about it every day.

ok also i saw two plays while i was writing the preliminary draft of nfrtg that were just so relevant and so incredible— degenerates by else went and JOB by max wolf friedlich—they both projected me into the sun (/pos) and i went home after both of them and wrote so much.

and then uh here’s an assorted bag of things that inspired nfrtg also!:

normal porn for normal people; barry hbo; search party; i mean. every cronenberg film??; weird nj (i was obsessed with this mag i would read it constantly as a kid and just have panic attacks); scenic central new jersey (an actual place despite what SOME PEOPLE try to tell you) and all its weird timewarpy stuffy vibes; house of leaves; i mean. jv’s writing (but specifically the like. very dumb moments of nfrtg are directly inspired by his ability to just shift gears mid-character crisis into something so stupid.); UH! UH! MARBLE HORNETS??????; there’s actually too many things to name so im done now
