 she hadn’t thought of monsters since she was a little girl.  monsters were never to her as the other kids saw them, a monster was her father’s face, it’s growl was the stomp of his boots ;  the storybook was her house at midnight.  the idea that things that went bump in the night were  &  had been real her whole life was enough to rattle her bones ,         whatever was in that pool that nibbled her ankle had taken barb   &   now they took tommy.   (   her tommy.  )
