Rappers My Mom Can Name
February 2017
In a 1989 interview with Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth) for Spin magazine, rapper LL Cool J said he hoped to be a Middle American sex symbol. In 1995, Will Smith graduated from his role as the vibrant nephew on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and starred as the vibrant, space-bound Marine in Independence Day. The studio didn't like the idea of a black guy saving the planet—they wanted somebody like Bruce Willis. But Will Smith was determined to play the part. The movie went on to receive the highest box office earnings for the year, making the Fresh Prince one of the highest paid actors for the next decade.
Six years before the release of Independence Day, in 1989, Will Smith boycotted the Grammys because they wouldn't televise hip-hop/rap as a musical category. Since then Will Smith has won four Grammys and LL Cool J hosted five consecutive Grammy awards between 2011-2016.
Rappers My Mom Can Name consists of artists who found success and big-time recognition in Middle America through their own types of ritual. Salt-N-Pepa dressed in red-gold-and-black color schemes, chanting at one to "push it," but to respect their agencies, most importantly. LL Cool J adopted the British Kangol hats as fashion and rolled his left pant leg. P. Diddy helped popularize the word "metrosexual." 50 Cent did hanging sit-ups as he sold VitaminWater. NWA rapped about police brutality and harassment, just like their East Coast predecessors, Public Enemy, whose hype man Flava Flav wore a clock necklace because it was time to get conscious.
