ABOUT THE FESTIVAL OF PHILIPPINE ARTS AND CULTURE (FPAC): The Annual Festival of Philippine Arts & Culture (FPAC) was first conceptualized in 1990 as part of the City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department’s Festivals Program, an arts program designed to address the multicultural constituency of the city. .
Organized by about 100 artists and community leaders, the first FPAC took place at Los Angeles City College on Mother’s Day, May 14, 1992, where 3,000 participants braved the aftermath of the L.A. riots that occurred the week before. Since then, FPAC has only grown stronger and bigger, moving to Cabrillo Beach in 1994, then to Pt. Fermin Park in 2001. This year FPAC will take place at the official birthplace of the City of Los Angeles where Filipino Americans can trace their heritage in the city to its founding. .

Jordan Clarkson Thrives to Be 6th Man
By Maria-Karmina After hearing Magic Johnson's speech on Jordan Clarkson during JC6’s Youth Summer Basketball Camp, like many of you, I too questioned what a “6th Man” meant. To put it simply, the “Sixth Man of the Year” Award is a prestigious title given by the league to the best performing player for a given team, coming off the bench as a substitute. And while rumors have been swirling around on whether or not JC would be traded to another team from the Los Angeles Lakers, he shot them down in a recent interview with The L.A. Times, stating: “That [stuff] will happen… Internet, people want to get clicks on their page…It’s part of the business. I love L.A. I’m staying here. Gotta put on this year.” In other words, there will be no distraction of any sort for this Texas native this season. As women may know him for his relationships and connection to models like Chanel Iman and Kylie Jenner. Men on the other hand, know him for his solid work on the paint and phenomenal stance as an offensive player. Truth be told, he threw me in a loop as I watched this 25-year old play one-on-one with the kids calling them by first name, at JC6 this summer. From the I.E. to Lafayette Park in L.A. – his parents, cousins and close friends are what holds the camp together. But it was in those little moments where I saw JC alley-oop with a 6 year-old, while other kids called him by his first name yelling, “Jordan! Jordan! Look!” as they shoot their shot, hoping JC would see and acknowledge them with a rare smile. These little efforts made it all the more-clear, that we are going to see a much better side of him this year. Even when he’s not working, he’s working hard at getting better mentally and staying focused on the goal to be the 6th Man. So as a fast player, who loves to run -- once he gets the ball, he’s going to bolt. And with the new leadership of the Lakers franchise and Magic Johnsons obvious fate in his abilities, JC is determined. So to all of you trade rumor starters, don’t hold your breath because we will most definitely see the best version of Jordan Clarkson this year. How to Do SXSW, Without a Badge
By Maria-Karmina Did you miss out on this year's SXSW in Austin, Texas? We have some of the best highlights, if you check our Instagram, our recap will make you feel like you were there. The future of the internet was frequently discussed at several events, especially in light of the fake news frenzy and increased hacking. But first let’s define what “SXSW” is; it’s slang for “South-By-Southwest.” At South by Southwest, a music lover is the ultimate target market. We presumed early adopters and tastemakers have been inundated not just with music, but also with whatever – through research or, just as likely, free-association – the marketers happen to think we’ll tout to friends after the convention ends. At the many day parties, there are ostentatiously branded, generously poured wine, beer and (mostly sweet) hard liquor to stupefy us. Out on 6th street (the place where everyone goes to party), people in trucks hand out energy drinks to wake us back up. There are red-eye remedies and breath mints, and whole forests worth of glossy fashion and music magazines. T-shirts touting websites and record companies abound and one daytime showcase handed out running shoes to early arrivals. The ritual for most, if not all, was to wake up red-eyed, download some songs, research each artist you were about to see, pull on a comfortable T-shirt, lace up some comfy walking shoes, knock back an energy drink and check the latest fashion trends -- until it’s time to pour something sweet of an alcoholic beverage, strong enough to guarantee a hangover. Sure, that’s the wildlife adventures of myself and many others in the midst of SXSW. Tastemaking can be so grueling, I know. Want to know the real secret to SXSW? RSVP to as many parties as you possibly can. Not only will you be able to enjoy free music by new and mainstream artists, but usually the event will be serving horderves (fancy finger food) – but if you’re lucky, an open bar can also be found in the corner of the room. One of the most comfortable places to hear music at SXSW was “the Fort,” the paved courtyard of what was previously a youth center in a prime downtown location. The final official day of SXSW often has one reflecting on the past week and the event as a whole with the brain cells left. Before getting into any of the music (there was plenty), here are some thoughts about this year’s SXSW. For starters, compared to the previous few years, 2017 found smaller crowds and specifically fewer spring breakers. This may have been due to a toned down presence of corporate sponsors and a lack of mega-headliners that have dominated press coverage of the festival in years past – sorry Garth, but the teenyboppers could care less. As a result of these factors, day parties and official showcases felt less crowded, lines were smaller, and getting around was easier. To sum it up, there’s a feeling amongst some that the SXSW bubble has finally burst and now the festival is making a slow return to its roots. And if we’re talking about roots, then we’re talking about the eclectic mix of smaller acts who make major sacrifices for the chance to play the festival. Saturday is considered the final day of SXSW, and yet, the spirit was in full swing where bands and fans sought to close out this year’s edition with a bang. Here’s the rad part of this entire two-week stint. South by Southwest has always been a festival with a heart of twang. When SXSW began in 1987, it was a showcase for the local music that had been overlooked by a music business based in Los Angeles, New York City and Nashville, and that meant a lot of Texas honky-tonk roots. Compared to its fall counterpart, the CMJ Music Marathon held in New York City, South by Southwest is still a haven for music that got its own genre classifications in the 1990's: alt-country and Americana. And unlike much of the music business, this festival is hospitable to musicians with wrinkles and gray hair.

"This Is... Dave East" He's On A Different Type Of Time By Maria-Karmina Landicho Having grown up in East Harlem, New York our November artist highlight, Dave East has officially signed on to become part of Def Jam’s heavy hitter roster, with the backings of rap legend, Nas -- behind him to executive produce his major label debut. El barrio also known as Spanish Harlem is indeed where he grew up, but New York is not the only place he wants to reign as he takes on shows in California and all across America. Having once dreamed of being a professional basketball player, Dave East knows the value of hard work after "cutting that chord" and quickly transitioning into music. And He is a success story waiting to be told, after gaining attention in 2014 from his mixtape Black Rose. He states in follow through interview with “CivilTV”: Nobody was supporting the rap at first, because everyone knew me for basketball…so now they see it..It just feels good when you prove someone wrong. That’s the best feeling in the world…(I thought) Alright, I’m different. I got a different story, I always felt that way. So I feel like the same way I went at (basketball), I treated music the same way. Continuing to prove the nay-sayers wrong with the release of his mixtape titled Hate Me Now which features Nas, Mack Wilds, Pusha T and more. Furthermore, in 2016, East was chosen as part of the XXL magazine's 2016 "Freshman Class" amongst other talents, including mydiveoLIVE’s first artist feature, Anderson .Paak Taken from his performance at the 2016 BET Hip Hop Awards Cypher, Dave East is proving a promising future for himself. So if you thought he was just about to settle down with his new family, contrary to societal belief, Dave East is on a different “Type of Time.”

Los Angeles Proclaims #IAmAsianAmerican By Maria-Karmina Landicho Freedom is a modern right, but it’s not always universally applied. Asian Americans are the fastest growing voting block in the country—but we rarely see politicians actively courting their support. Therefore, they tend to become “The Invisible Vote.” But why? In the wider scheme of things, Asians in America are in fact a diverse, polyglot bunch, and a growing share of the electorate, yet remain mostly invisible in the American political debate. Some of the perceived Asian invisibility is precisely due to the fact that Asian demographic power is a relatively new thing. Furthermore, they also are the most ignored population, suffering from a lack of outreach from community organizations and political parties. For a long time, minority voices have been the least voluble in the room, (if they were in the room at all), but this election has seen that Asian Pacific Islanders are the fastest growing population in the United States, having outpaced Hispanic growth since 2012. This, more than shame, more than lack of resourcing, more than widely held stereotypes, may have more to do with Asian invisibility than anything else. Asians don’t necessarily think of themselves as “Asian,” and so the struggles of one subset of that group may not be particularly relevant at all—if they’re even on the radar. This November election Asian Americans can make their voices heard and influence the outcome of the political process. And now more than ever, it would be a mistake for candidates at the national level, and even more so on the local level, to overlook the Asian American vote.
