SKULDUGGERY (me, yes, I did steal his name)'S SUPER COOL REVIEW ON "A Mind Full Of Murder" BY DEREK LANDY: spoilers ahead!:
The book itself was somewhat boring to me, if I had to admit it, I had to use music and such to keep me through it without getting distracted and I still skimmed through a couple chapters. I kind of like it? It was alright as a mystery, though due to the new plot of Winter Grieving and her story, I felt as if there was too much to focus on and hard to grasp, especially since the characters didn't seem particularly charming to me. I was hoping for some more Omen/Sebastian, so a complete lack of him did disappoint me.
My favourite characters in this book were all side characters, which is probably a bad thing since they were barely relevant, and also reminded me of other characters. (They were Reverend Bilious Fervour cus I love priest/cultist characters so much, Aphotic because he reminded me of a character named “Apophis”, and Cadaver because I love him regardless.)
Admittedly, the mystery itself did interest me slightly, though I was really just hoping Cadaver was behind it… (I can’t cope with how badly mischaracterised Dynamic duo is, so I cope with him… I swear Skulduggery is actually my favourite, in the older books…) Though I did find both Skulduggery and Valkyrie acting like assholes at times, or just overall immature. There’s been a time skip, but to be honest they act younger than they did in the earlier books. Though I could say that it’s because Skulduggery is no longer viewed as the “older adult” in Valkyrie’s eyes, she has definitely become more childish in a way that makes her seem ditsy? If that’s the right word for it? They definitely had their moments, and I did like the little thing with Skulduggery being close with animals, but that’s beside the point. [16:03] Ghastly deciding to do the whole true names thing was definitely interesting to me, and I actually agree with his motives; it reminds me of the book of names, and if he’s trying to restore Sanctuary to its “good old days”, I approve! I did predict him being grand mage, as I do think he was only resurrected for that purpose. On top of that, seeing Melancholia was nice, though I felt it was really weird how she acted with Valkyrie? It felt like she was a completely different character and I didn’t really like it lol.
Overall, this book wasn’t really memorable to me, to the point where I’m struggling to write this review, but I rate it a solid 6/10. Weird pee mentions and jokes that felt off to me, as well as more freaking highschool stuff (like?? Derek, are you trying to take notes from Harry Potter??) that I felt we were over, but okay. Lots of new characters introduced as well as older ones being brought back, which makes me worry how he’s going to cope with these compiling subplots, which I admittedly don’t have much faith in. If this was the first book I read to get interested in this trilogy, I probably wouldn’t have read the others.

Desperately want to put skug n jon sims in the same room. Specifically season 2 jon because I can’t decide if the stupid ass skeleton would make fun of him or “oooo murder” and send the poor man further into a spiral. Or both.

OOKKKK sooo (mild tma spoilers for like,, S3 kind of) Skulduggery couldn't be a slaughter avatar for the single reason that its random violence. It's the fear of unnecessary violence. Skulduggery is on a HUNT for revenge. He isn't planning to kill anyone in his path, but rather is tracking Serpine alone. He is on a HUNT. Also, guns, detectives, and the police force is often related to the Hunt (think Basira and Daisy) His family crest is a fox, something that is a hunter in nature, and aligns with the wolf motifs Daisy had. Skulduggery doesn't seek out violence, and usually tracks down those he attacks. It isn't random, he's tactical and often plans with a group (group?? pack??? you get what I'm saying??) Eye-coded because of his natural curiosity, need for knowledge, and the fact he'd break rules and steal things for information. Also detective fits both into tracking down and hunting, as well as finding and discovering :3
Desperately want to put skug n jon sims in the same room. Specifically season 2 jon because I can’t decide if the stupid ass skeleton would make fun of him or “oooo murder” and send the poor man further into a spiral. Or both.

My thoughts on HBL !! I dislike Hell Breaks Loose. Anyways spoilers ahead!! Hell Breaks Loose started off strong for me by introducing the fact it was pre-Lord Vile, I don't know why I was so hyped for silly dead men adventures as Skul tried to recover from his crimes, but that was sad... I can't say it was Derek's fault, however. Anyways I liked the sisters, I guess, sister Stone was interesting. I don't know why Ghastly had a romance, however. Maybe its because I'm an avid Ghasduggery shipper, or maybe it's because I knew for a fact they wouldn't stay together until the events of the first book, but sure. I was actually warming up to all the characters, enjoying the book, and getting behind how dark and broody Skulduggery was. (Side note: IT IS COMPLETELY FINE TO NAME YOUR FUCKING WEAPONS!!!! SKUL WAS GRIEVING OK??? ALSO IT WAS A KICK-ASS NAME!!! I WOULD NAME MY WEAPONS!!! HE'S MENTALLY UNWELL, SURE, BUT NAMING HIS SWORD HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT!!!!) Anyways, then Valkyrie showed up. I don't need to even try and explain the sound of absolute anguish that came out of me at that moment. Like, I put down the book to sob. I was so excited for silly pre-Val adventures, and I was kind of sick of her.... (I'M SORRY BUT SHE'S SO OVERPOWERED AND I HATE THE TIME TRAVEL) So when she showed up, it completely ruined the entire book for me. Thanks Derek <3
I don't really remember what happened, I'll be honest. Something about the Hidden God? Guy gets sucked into portal, becomes OP? Anyways I want to talk about how Derek fucking ruined Lord Vile for me. WHY WAS HE HERE?? WHERE WAS ABYSSNIA?? WHY WASN'T HE WEARING ARMOUR??? HUH??? It was so confusing istg Lord Vile, to me, is Skulduggery's grief. The only reason he's scary is because he's just a guy in some armour. A man with enough power to level cities, yet nobody even knows the sound of his voice. SO WHEN HE SHOWED UP AS A GODDAMN SHADOW SKELETON-- I went apeshit. I cried, sobbed, even. YOU DON'T DO THAT. It literally destroyed all my thoughts on him as a character, and really watered him down. As well as reminding us that Skulduggery has this OP power that he doesn't fucking use. The Sexter kiss was like a sentence. It was the only motivation I had to finish this damned book. Oh yeah also new villain ig The end bit was kind of dry but ok I guess I liked Ghastly, and it was cool to get some lore on Skul and Ghast's past + HOPELESS !!!!!!! I felt my self sob every time they talked about Skulduggery getting better, but that soon faded out by the time Valkyrie arrived I'm simply going to take out the bits I liked for my own timeline in my head, like a crow pecking at a carcass, and discard the rest :3 All in all, 3/10. I thought it couldn't be as bad as UtE.

Do you not like Derek landy books then? No judgement just curious
It’s complicated.
Love phase one of skulduggery. It literally saved my life as a teenager. Very dear to my heart. Essential to the gay awakenings. Essential to the gender awakenings. Saved my chemistry grade. Gave me long-lasting friendships and some of the best fandom experiences I’ve ever had. Shaped my writing for better and worse and better and all that…
Demon road? Recycled trash. Literally one of the worst things I’ve ever read in my life. No exaggeration. It is one of the most wretched things i have ever read in my life.
I couldn’t invest in phase 2 past Midnight, but I’ve kept up on it through other people since quite frankly I don’t have time to read trash. Since becoming aware of his internet presence and approach to writing, I also have an ever-expanding list of Judgements against the man and his ability to write, which has led to a worsening opinion of the overall series.
When I finish nursing school I will be rereading everything, forming a concise opinion, and making an 8 hour video rant about it (with sources).

He was never okay
i feel like in a lot of early ya books it’s unrealistic that a, like, eleven year old is the protag and saves the world because firstly have you met an eleven year old and secondly what adult in their right mind is completely comfortable saddling a little kid with the burden of humanity?? but skulduggery pleasant is entirely feasible because skulduggery is absolutely not in his right mind and literally everyone around him tells him so constantly. twelve year old not-even-magic stephanie is like “i want revenge” and he’s like totally understandable you can tag along

Hear me out:
Skug was born ambidextrous right.
BUT what if, he normally used his right hand for things because of the left hand being related to evil stuff. like, people thought he was possessed by the devil, and he used his left hand, which was considered evil.

Guys, people can have a very deep and profound relationship without it having to be romantic. It can be a friendship, a familial bond, etc. Being the most important person to someone doesn't mean that you love each other romantically, it can very much be just platonic.
(And yes, this is about Valduggery. No, I don't believe Skulduggery and Valkyrie's relationship was ever romantic, he first met her when she was a baby and started training her when she was 12, for shit's sake. He sees her more like a younger friend he helped raise and mentor (and who may remind him of himself, given the parallels between them of having a dark side that they know must be kept contained lest disaster occurs😐). They're each other's very codependent best friend. It's platonic, it has always only been platonic, but them only loving each other this way doesn't mean they aren't each other's favourite/most important person. You can love someone more than any other person without it ever being romantic.)
