I think half the motivation Mydei and Phainon have for competing is not about the competition itself, it's about impressing each other. There IS a part of their motivation that is all about the fun and thrill and arrogance and the connection through play.

But another big part is... Flirting. They are just... Peacocking. Making a little mating dance.

And I don't think they are fully aware of that.

It's trying to show off and be like "see? I'm great! Look at me! Keep your eyes on me and my impressive acts!"

It's like when a kid does a silly dance trying to impress you; a cat bringing you a dead bird, but instead they are showing off the titankin heads they chopped.
