Hey Anon!I can definitely relate to that struggle, but rest assured you’ve already made a really solid start. So how should you continue... I have some suggestions in which I hope help :)Some suggested themes you could go for, judging by the artists you’ve chosen (who are awesome by the way):Outcast, outlaws, outsiders, unconventional people Hidden identity, masks, VulnerabilityHuman sexualitySadness IsolationWomen in artMore technical themes to exploreLimited colour paletteRealistic portraitureDigital and traditional portraiture comparisonsSomething that might help you is to make some mood boards: do you like their colours? Do a colour swatch and find images using the same or similar colour palette (e.g. screenshots from games/films, photographs of things you see around you.)Hope I’ve been some help. Good luck ! Don’t hesitate to ask more questions x

hiii i need some ideas! my theme is emotion for fine art. I already have an artist (agnes cecile) but i need more! idk how to fill up my book either :(
Hey oooo that’s a very interesting theme, but vague and those can be hard to get started with. Agnes Cecil is a great pick, she’s very expressive with colours in her portraiture, so it sounds like you could go down a route like that? How does use of colour portray a particular emotion or emotions in general? I’d recommend looking at:Francoise NiellyAnna BocekLeonid Afremov (good to look at landscapes too)I hope this helps 😊Let me know if you need any more help - good luck XD

Hello Again!
I've given it plenty of time to leave my blog alone to be examined and moderated and I think I can safely go back to editing this blog again! I got my GCSE results back in August and was especially pleased with my Art and Design score. So if you're starting your GCSE or A Level, half way through or just want to ask some general questions, please feel free to ask and I'll answer as soon as I can. -Jayd

Using Song Lyrics in my Artwork
I noticed whilst I have been making my book illustrations how effective the words are in the background, so I thought it would be an interesting idea to have a go at writing in my own text as the background of some works...
I started off making this digital panting on my iPad using the words from Coldplay's Us Against The World:
This came a bit later, using Gabrielle Aplin's Alive: a very beautiful song which is close to my heart. I painted the text in the background with watercolour and the foreground with acrylic (I didn't want them to blend whilst applying water).
I painted this when I was still deciding on the style of characters I wanted to go for, so this is an anime version of The Pierrot (a character I created during my mock exam.)
I wrote the lyrics to Clown by Emile Sande on some pages stuck together to see how it would look. I was afraid it would look to cluttered however I think it looks really effective. I shall be considering doing this in my final piece.

Working with The Photographs
After taking the photographs I went onto recreate them using different styles, mediums and techniques below
As my main focus is book art I thought it would be appropriate to experiment with drawing ink, to give the pictures that printed-straight-on-a-book feel, and I really like the turnout.
This was my first attempt of using books pages as a canvas similar to that of Panikanova. I used charcoal and ink for this drawing.
This was another drawing of the same model in a different pose as Cinderella: I completed this digitally with my iPad. I loved using this art technique, however I don't think it is appropriate to continue down the digital route, I would like to experiment further with other materials...
Something I probably should have posted earlier - before I took the photographs I experimented with applying makeup to myself, I was inspired by Tim Burton in the application of this makeup. I used different shades of purple eye shadow to hollow out my eyes, and applied thick mascara. The pattern on the side of my face was drawn with an eye liner pencil.
I also experimented with these photos... drawing a life like and a cartoon like drawing of the same photograph.

Creating Objects Onto Books (Inspired by Ekatrina Panikova)
Similar to Panikova's book paintings I have also been looking at objects relating to my characters to add to my final piece. I have been experimenting with different ways I could present them.
The Glass slipper is one object I have been looking at. I've sketched it, made it pop out like a pop up book. I have decided to try and do this for my final piece.
A wicker basket, suitable for Little Red Cap.
An apple, relating to Snow White
A drew a picture of my violin whilst reading The Wonderful Musician by The Brothers Grimm.
The Glass Slipper response drawing
The wicker basket response/reference drawing
The apple reference drawing.
After I made these drawings I thought about how to place them, this is what I came up with, using the Glass Slipper to experiment with...
I drew an outline in an old book and used my crafting knife to cut around it.
I then decided to try and give it a 3D enhancement by having it 'pop' out of the page. I really liked doing this, and adding in the detail of the slipper with a ballpoint pen really added an intriguing effect. I am going to continue with more of these into my sketchbook and I think I will be using this in my final piece.

After the book folding experience, I wanted to try out some other kinds of folding. I started experimenting with making flowers, particularly roses, with pages from books. I loved how this turned out, and I plan on adding some paper flowers to my final piece

Plan For My Final Piece - Fragments of Fairytales
Materials: Art Board, The Brothers Grimm Book, masking tape, brushes, template.
Board size: 70 x 90 (cm)
I'm using a mixture of three photos from the Grimm's Dark Fairytales photo shoot to create a template for my final piece. I will be combining them together and tracing over them in Sketchbook Pro to use as a reference during the exam.
I will be using a large art board to stick different pages of Grimm's Fairytales onto it: these 'extracts' will relate to the three figures I will be drawing: 'Little Red Cap', 'Cinderella' and 'The Frog Prince' and also other pages from other stories with strong iconic female leads. I believe having the pages as my canvas will have an empowering effect on the image and will enhance the leads of my inspiration.
On top of the page covered art board I will draw three of the characters from the stories I mentioned above: full figure drawings with dry-brush ink. I will also be using green, blue and red ink to emphasise colours and to give more of a close connection to storybooks and to make the image appear as if it is printed in a book. I will be making these figures quite dark, gothic, beautiful yet melancholy as Grimm's Fairytales are usually quite haunting.
Surrounding the figures will be elements of the story that relate to them, for example the glass slipper, a basket and possibly a frog or a golden ball and a tiara. I will be drawing these and cutting them out on separate pages and adding them to the piece, like drawings in a pop up book.
I will be also be adding some paper folded flowers, to show the skills i have picked up from paper folding the books and the sculptures.
The fragments of the stories will come together to hopefully create something unique and magical.
I have mainly been influenced by all of the artists I have used in the creation of this image.

Different Interpretations of Snow White
I thought it would be really interesting and valuable to me to have a look at the different contemporary interpretations of Snow White and later create my own version. Snow White is one of the most popular of the Brothers Grimm stories.
Snow White from Disney’s Snow White
Snow White from the film ‘Mirror Mirror’
Snow White from the film ‘Snow White And The Huntsman
I found looking at different versions of this character very eye opening and it has given me lots of options to play around with. I will not be continuing with Snow White as I have already made other plans, but sketching these pictures has given me some ideas on how I can develop my own interpretation of Grimm’s characters.

Studying and Observing The Lord of The Rings
The Lord of The Rings is an epic fantasy adventure written by J. R. R. Tolkien. I felt it was appropriate for me to look at some specific fictional creations as part of my work so I can make a final decision as to what kind of fictional work I want to produce.
Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins ^
I have loved the Lord of The Rings franchise since a very young age, and have been influenced greatly by J R R Tolkien's masterpiece in my art.
I recreated the image of Gandalf above in a style I was hoping to use for my final piece. I layered up pages from The Fellowship of the Ring and stuck them on an A2 piece of paper. I used chalk and charcoal to recreate the image. I like how it turned out, quite pleased with the way the extra text an the background adds more depth, however I will not be continuing to use chalk and charcoal as I found it very difficult to handle on the parchment like paper and it was very hard to not make the picture look faded.

Another Su Blackwell inspired piece, using Robinson Crusoe as a base. I liked drawing out the palm trees and Robinson before suspending them, it is something i would like to look into further whilst planning my final piece

Inspired by the artist Su Blackwell, I created a response to her work using cut out Golden Snitches from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Askaban. I loved how this turned out, making the sculpture was very enjoyable. Using a craft knife, I cut out shapes of the snitches from the book, then I used a translucent thread to sew them on a suspending piece of thread attached to the ceiling.
I did enjoy doing this, however I found it quite awkward to work with, and I'm not sure how I could have gone further with this. I am taking inspiration from this for my final piece however.
