Something that I absolutely love about Edwin is how deeply he values friendship.

The Cat King asks Edwin if he and Charles have a "special friendship." Edwin earnestly says "we are best friends, if you must know." That is, to him, incredibly special. That is a special friendship.

Despite obviously having a little fluttery crush on Monty, Edwin happily tells Niko that "they are new friends" when she asks if he wants to kiss him. Yeah, some of this could be him trying to save face - but his little smile shows that this is important. They are friends.

Edwin watches Scooby-Doo with Niko and compliments how clever the Scooby gang is. He is obviously more clever. He is expressing interest in something his new bestie likes because he wants to connect with her.

Then, he sits beside her in silent support while she writes to her mother.

When Monty betrays him, the FIRST thing Edwin is deeply hurt about is that Monty was "just pretending to be [his] friend." It's only after that that he addresses romantic feelings.

This is almost certainly a direct result of his decades-long friendship with Charles and the way that they clearly consider themselves partners even when platonic. I love it.

One of the things I adore about DBDA is the history between Charles and Edwin that just permeates everything, right from the opening scenes.

George and Jayden did such a fantastic job of portraying two people that have known each other for 30 odd years. Their bickering, their body language, the way they're constantly checking in with each other with just a glance. The moment that the Night Nurse comes for them in episode 6, just before the spider gets Edwin, they communicate so much by just looking at each other and not uttering a single word.

George and Jayden did such a fantastic job of bringing such wonderfully complex and nuanced characters to life. I really do hope we get a second season, but either way I'm really excited to see what they do as their careers progress. They're so incredibly talented and they're going to go on to amazing things.

Crystal has to resist the urge to take out her earrings and fist fight Charles when he tells her that Edwin is in love with him and he's not sure what he's feeling.

payneland is finally getting togther. charles is trying to take things slow ("he's edwardian, crystal, i can't rush in and scare him off, can i? gotta take it slow") and he thinks he's being really respectful and nice. edwin, who knows charles kisses girls he's not even been on a date with, kisses girls he barely even knows- assumes charles simply does not want to kiss him. wacky miscommunication ensues with edwin increasingly trying to get charles to kiss him, and charles finding increasingly wacky ways to avoid it. in the end four lesbians yell at them to just fucking kiss already.

Halcyon Days by @cordelia-noir:

If you’re looking for a modern au this is definitely the one! Over all very fluffy and wholesome, but it definitely doesn’t shy away from angst, it also just has some really fun ocs (Bertie is a favorite of mine) and nice plot progression (I’d definitely recommend reading all their other fics too they’re all lovely).

Who? You mean your teammate in the Codependency World Cup by @oxbellows:

This series is definitely one of my all time faves! The author just captures the boys voices so incredibly well, to the point that I honestly consider all their fics canon, in my book lol. The plots are all super fun and interesting, and the ocs here are also awesome (I specifically really loved the valkyrie girls, from Like We’re Gonna Die Young (Again)) I really consider this series a must read, if you haven’t already.

Another example of RoseGanymede95 amazing writing, this one in particular has had me in absolute chokehold. It’s such a sweet, cozy and domestic read, and I’m just in love with it.

This one is still ongoing but it’s already really good. Just a bunch of fun Payneland dates, featuring a lot of nice exploration and feeling realization for Charles, so I can’t wait to see what the final chapter entails.

If Eternity is Finite, I Would Spend it All With You by Stringsofstars:

An absolutely beautiful character study of Charles, and it’s on the shorter side so I won’t go in to detail, so you can experience all of it first hand.

Laid to Rest by @asidian:

Love fics where the boys get buried together, and this is a lovely example of that, I especially love how beautifully detailed the description of their surroundings are, I could really picture it in my head.

Love For Hire by @dear-lucrow:

Ngl was a little obsessed wit this fic, while it was still ongoing (and lets be real I still am lol) . It’s another expertly crafted modern au, with ballet dancing and fake dating this time around. This fic absolutely excels at banter, all of the exchanges between Charles and Edwin were stuck in my head for at least 2 days. It’s an overall incredibly engaging and dynamic story. (SPOILER: I especially love the moment where Edwin gets dragged out of the diamond ball, after assaulting David. (cuz lets be real, feral Edwin is always a treat.))

Brothers In Arms by Stringsofstars:

Another one by Stringsofstars, this is really just me telling you to read all their other fics; especially Whisky Tears, and Like the Leaves One by One we Fall, which sort of work as companion pieces to BIA.

This fic is unbelievably good, it really fleshes out Edwin’s family with it’s amazing ocs (specifically his brother in this instance). It’s really good at delving into how each individual character feels, in the unique situation they’re in. I particularly like their expansion on hell, and focus on what it meant for Edwin to grow up under WW1.

Ornithology by @itsthenovelteafactor:

This one is great for you Monty lovers. The plot is tight, and immediately engaged me. It having Mick POVs really took me by surprise, because of the rarity, but I definitely appreciated it. It really expands the world, and rounds out the characters in a satisfying way.
