Actually kind of love the idea of Crystal growing old beside the boys. What a journey it would be, her relationship to them changing and deepening as she matures and grows, experiencing things they never have or will. I mean, I see a lot of the default assumption that it would cause her pain to get old while they stay young, but I think that comes from the same place as all youth-worship/age-terror and it doesn't ring true to me. The inverse of that hurt in the boys, where they watch her grow up and live a life they'll never have, is much, much sadder. Crystal is not Esther, and my guess is the older she gets (and finds out what that actually means beyond getting crow's feet) the more acutely she'll feel the tragedy of Edwin and Charles' lives being cut short.
They'd eventually be older than each other in various ways. The boys with more time on earth, Crystal with more lived experience. The boys with more investigative experience, Crystal with more practical wisdom. There would be so many overlapping, swirled together dynamics, richer and deeper and more intricate as years pass.
The boys getting a front-row seat to what it means to travel through time, Crystal experiencing the strange way time travels past the boys. Adventuring with them keeps her young, walking through life with her keeps them dynamic, connected to the living world.
And then Charles and Edwin would have to face her death. The pain of loving something that doesn't last forever, losing it, and then carrying their ever-shifting grief, the way memories become a presence, how they change and fade and turn to gold. And what an inescapably human experience that is. What an elemental part of life.
#i have this fic idea in my head#where they remain friends throughout crystals life#and at the end of her life when she is old and wrinkled and gray#she is dying at home surrounded by her children and grands and great grands#some of them can see Charles and Edwin and some cant#those that can have know the two ghost detectives as a constant in crystals long life#and when she passes Charles and Edwin are in her house#wanting to pay their respects but not intrude#and when she dies she comes up to them#now as a ghost#she has no unfinished business so she will pass on to her afterlife#but first she wanted to hug them goodbye#a hug that for the first time in their long friendship they can actually feel#and since the Lost and Found gave the boys permission to stay#they get to watch as Death arrives and takes Crystals hand#and she moves on#dead boy detectives#crystal palace

still thinking about edwin saying "you have to experience hell before you can see what's really here" after charles gets him out of the dollhouse since the implication is that seeing edwin's hell was as painful to charles as experiencing hell himself

Dead Boy Detectives Offerings for Fandom Trumps Hate 2025!
If you haven't seen it before, FTH is a yearly charity auction. The idea is: creators sign up to offer fan creations – fic, art, edits, betaing, or anything else – in exchange for donations to charity. You then bid on the creator(s) of your choice!
This has been taking place since 2016, and always picks an overall cause to support. This year, that cause was queer organisations. What's more fitting for the first year our fandom can participate?
Even though this is the first year for DBDA, we've come smashing right in with a whopping 35 entries. This puts us somewhere in the top 20 biggest fandom offerings (of hundreds)!
I've made a spreadsheet here to consolidate and for easier viewing, but I'll also be listing everyone directly on Tumblr under the cut.
For more information on FTH, click here, and to see the full list of DBDA offerings on FTH's website, click here.
Bidding is open now and runs for a bit under a week, until this Saturday, March 1st, at 8pm ET. Happy bidding everyone!!

Chapter 4 of my DBDA fic The True Love's Kiss Curse is posted! After a curse turns Edwin into a frog, Charles, Crystal and Niko must contend with a witch, a kidnapping and a beast to turn him back.
11.6K words, T rating, 4/6 chapters
Chapter title: Don't bring a knife to a tonguefight
Chapter summary - Charles has been too focused on other, larger concerns to dwell on the fact that Edwin kissed him, but matchmaker Niko has been waiting for the perfect moment to quiz him about his feelings.
Later, Crystal gets a face full of teeth and claws during an attempted rescue, while Charles fights an armed and angry badger - and gets an unexpected assist from Edwin.
Read Chapter 4 here!
(Chapter 1 link to start at the beginning)
Also, shoutout to @aprilsd for suggesting Frogwin for Edwin's frog form, which is perfect and hilarious!!!

Chapters 2 and 3 of The True Love's Kiss Curse are up!
Summary - With Edwin now a frog as a result of an altered curse, Crystal, Niko and the boys have no choice but find and confront the grudge-holding witch who cast it.
Preview -
“So you know where to find this witch?” Crystal asked.
“No idea. We tried to track her down again a while back, convince her to stop harassing us, but she’d moved house since ’13.” Charles picked up his backpack and shoved his arm into the pocket universe, squinting as he rummaged around. “Ah!” he exclaimed as he pulled out a garish vintage fanny pack, the nylon covered in colorful swirls and shapes like a bowling alley carpet. “We should go to Agnes’ shop first. I bet she’ll help us. Might even know where she lives, right Edwin?” he said as he clipped the bumbag around his waist and unzipped the main pocket. He brought his cupped hands up to Edwin and said cheerfully, “Aright, mate, got your ride all ready.”
Edwin refused to move. This is so humiliating. Absolutely not.
“C’mon, Edwin. I need a safe place to keep you, don’t I?”
Edwin glared at him.
“Unless you want to stay here in the office while me and the girls fight a witch by ourselves.” Charles cracked the tiniest smile and dipped his chin to look at Edwin through his lashes. Ruthless.
Edwin closed his eyes and slumped. Fine, he finally relented as he climbed onto Charles’ hands. Charles lowered him to his waist and Edwin hopped into the open pocket. He made an ungainly 180 degree turn over the sloping fabric to face the front, his head peeking out of the pouch. Niko gave him an encouraging little wave.

Edwin: Do you think that's wise, Crystal? Crystal: Uh oh, you're giving me the Bitchy Eyebrow. Charles: Wait, have you named all of Edwin's expressions? Crystal: Yeah of course. There's the Bitchy Eyebrow, the Sucked on a Lemon, the I'm Right and I'm Making It Everyone's Problem... Edwin: ... Crystal: And now I'm getting the Loud Eyeroll.

There are people – some in my own Party – who think that if you just give Donald Trump everything he wants, he’ll make an exception and spare you some of the harm. I’ll ignore the moral abdication of that position for just a second to say — almost none of those people have the experience with this President that I do. I once swallowed my pride to offer him what he values most — public praise on the Sunday news shows — in return for ventilators and N95 masks during the worst of the pandemic. We made a deal. And it turns out his promises were as broken as the BIPAP machines he sent us instead of ventilators. Going along to get along does not work – just ask the Trump-fearing red state Governors who are dealing with the same cuts that we are. I won’t be fooled twice.
I’ve been reflecting, these past four weeks, on two important parts of my life: my work helping to build the Illinois Holocaust Museum and the two times I’ve had the privilege of reciting the oath of office for Illinois Governor.
As some of you know, Skokie, Illinois once had one of the largest populations of Holocaust survivors anywhere in the world. In 1978, Nazis decided they wanted to march there.
The leaders of that march knew that the images of Swastika clad young men goose stepping down a peaceful suburban street would terrorize the local Jewish population – so many of whom had never recovered from their time in German concentration camps.
The prospect of that march sparked a legal fight that went all the way to the Supreme Court. It was a Jewish lawyer from the ACLU who argued the case for the Nazis – contending that even the most hateful of speech was protected under the first amendment.
As an American and a Jew, I find it difficult to resolve my feelings around that Supreme Court case – but I am grateful that the prospect of Nazis marching in their streets spurred the survivors and other Skokie residents to act. They joined together to form the Holocaust Memorial Foundation and built the first Illinois Holocaust Museum in a storefront in 1981 – a small but important forerunner to the one I helped build thirty years later.
I do not invoke the specter of Nazis lightly. But I know the history intimately — and have spent more time than probably anyone in this room with people who survived the Holocaust. Here’s what I’ve learned – the root that tears apart your house’s foundation begins as a seed – a seed of distrust and hate and blame.
The seed that grew into a dictatorship in Europe a lifetime ago didn’t arrive overnight. It started with everyday Germans mad about inflation and looking for someone to blame.
I’m watching with a foreboding dread what is happening in our country right now. A president who watches a plane go down in the Potomac – and suggests — without facts or findings — that a diversity hire is responsible for the crash. Or the Missouri Attorney General who just sued Starbucks – arguing that consumers pay higher prices for their coffee because the baristas are too “female” and “nonwhite.” The authoritarian playbook is laid bare here: They point to a group of people who don’t look like you and tell you to blame them for your problems.
I just have one question: What comes next? After we’ve discriminated against, deported or disparaged all the immigrants and the gay and lesbian and transgender people, the developmentally disabled, the women and the minorities – once we’ve ostracized our neighbors and betrayed our friends – After that, when the problems we started with are still there staring us in the face – what comes next.
All the atrocities of human history lurk in the answer to that question. And if we don’t want to repeat history – then for God’s sake in this moment we better be strong enough to learn from it.
I swore the following oath on Abraham Lincoln’s Bible: “I do solemnly swear that I will support the constitution of the United States, and the constitution of the state of Illinois, and that I will faithfully discharge the duties of the office of Governor .... according to the best of my ability.
My oath is to the Constitution of our state and of our country. We don’t have kings in America – and I don’t intend to bend the knee to one. I am not speaking up in service to my ambitions — but in deference to my obligations.
If you think I’m overreacting and sounding the alarm too soon, consider this:
It took the Nazis one month, three weeks, two days, eight hours and 40 minutes to dismantle a constitutional republic. All I’m saying is when the five-alarm fire starts to burn, every good person better be ready to man a post with a bucket of water if you want to stop it from raging out of control.
Those Illinois Nazis did end up holding their march in 1978 – just not in Skokie. After all the blowback from the case, they decided to march in Chicago instead. Only twenty of them showed up. But 2000 people came to counter protest. The Chicago Tribune reported that day that the “rally sputtered to an unspectacular end after ten minutes.” It was Illinoisans who smothered those embers before they could burn into a flame.
Tyranny requires your fear and your silence and your compliance. Democracy requires your courage. So gather your justice and humanity, Illinois, and do not let the “tragic spirit of despair” overcome us when our country needs us the most.
