Some friends of mine lost a beloved dog and the wife, especially, was feeling the loss. The husband gathered some of the dog's fur and I incorporated that into some clay I dug here. I made 5 primitive, ceramic pieces for her. RIP, Gracie. You were a very good girl.

WOW! For those who asked, this link will take you to some different formats (prints and cards and things) for the raven I drew tonight. It was exciting to see such a positive response! The original was bought for way more than I was asking and offers to buy it just kept coming. I'm so grateful.
Cheers!

I decided to try making my own charcoal for drawing. I used willow and, for comparison, bamboo chopsticks and some pine. The bamboo and pine made poor charcoal, but the willow was smooth and rich and black. The other types were scratchy and marked inconsistently. Willow is a remarkable tree. Anywhere a living chunk of it falls, it will drop roots and grow. I gathered green fronds from a branch that had fallen, peeled off the bark, and cooked everything in a sealed tin with one tiny pin hole. That allows everything to char without burning to ash because the material is deprived of oxygen. Once the smoke and flame stops coming out of the pin hole, the charcoal is done. Worked like a charm.
