Modern day great fairies immagrated from Hytopia to help the people of Hyrule with fashion.

My evidence? Look at all the great fairies that come after Triforce Heroes, right down to the very next entry. The great fairy in EoW is such a diva, there's no way she didn't come from Hytopia.

So, from my understanding, Poof is used as a slur in the UK. It's a shortened form of poofter, used against gay people. And with him also being a fairy (also a term used towards gay people), it was just bad naming. It wasn't intentional, but ANW changed his name because they were now aware of it.
