Wyrdwood wand
this is a wizard game with an alien invasion plotline in it
Touchstones: Wizard School media, Lovecraftian Mythos, Studio Ghibli, Chuubo, Final Fantasy Tactics, Sports Anime
Genre: Wizard School tactics Game
What is this game?: Wyrdwood Wand is a tactics game heavily inspired by D&D 4e, where players play as young (usually) mages growing up and studying in the prestigious [citation needed] Wyrdwood academy
How's the gameplay?: Wyrdwood Wand is heavily based on D&D 4e, its a crunchy tactics game with really fun and intuitive character creation which splits up characters between their party role, and the nature of their magic, one giving you broad strokes of a role, and the other cementing it's specifics, if you're familiar with how 4e plays you're familiar with how this game plays, and if you're familiar with 5e there's a little bit of a learning curve but it's still a pretty easy to learn game, Wyrdwood also features a fairly robust roleplaying system, that has a clean split between tactical and goofy spells, meaning characters can have silly spell options without having to break their spell bank
What's the setting (If any) like?: Wyrdwood is set in the world of Gliss, a setting with quite a bit of interesting lore and tidbits, but for now all you need to know is that Gliss is currently recovering from a massive war against an alien species known as the Wix, the world got kinda screwed by this invasion, population is small at around 300 million humans, towns are small, and technology hasn't quite reached the height it did before the war, think your stereotypical ghibli setting, but with more aliens and cthulhus. the Wyrdwood verse also has something called "Destiny", a mysterious force protecting humans from deadly blows, this is something that's mostly a gameplay term but it bleeds over into lore sometimes. Oh right I forgot to mention, in this world hats are incredibly important, if you don't wear one, good luck casting spells!
What's the tone?: Wyrdwood's wand is mostly fairly lighthearted, it can touch on topics of warfare and imperialism, but its a silly world full of goblins that can turn any object into a gun, and nigh-immortal reptilian orbs
Session length: Fairly long, 3-4 hours is not uncommon
Number of Players: 3+, 5 is recommended
Malleability: Wyrdwood's mechanics are actually not very tied into its setting, if your setting is primarily consisting of spellcasters you could run it in Wyrdwood probably
Resources: As wyrdwood is a fairly new, obscure, and in development game there's not too many resources, there's a google spreadsheet that works wonders, a few scattered bits of homebrew, and other such things
I REALLY like wyrdwood, its lighthearted and silly aesthetic combined with genuinely fun gameplay and character creation sell you into its world where really weird shit happens casually and where hats are vital for spellcasting.

Astral Bussy: This is an item for adventurers who were born in the wrong body. When you put on the astral Bussy, your outie becomes an innie, and a fellow adventurer (with consent) trades their innie for your outie. A win win for all adventures.
Genre Non-Specific TTRPG Items To Fuck With Your Players Pt 4
Elixir of Energy: a strangely colored Liquid that is said to give you energy. (This is just an energy drink with a shit load of caffeine. For extra fun you can make a roll every now and then to determine when they crash, or roll for kidney stone if they drink too much)
Butterfly Coffin: a strange cocoon shaped coffin that is said to bring about change and growth after sleeping in it. Step in and emerge a new you. (So this one takes a bit of effort, but depending on the game you're playing you can make a chart of random changes like an extra toe, your hair is now purple, you have tiny little wings. Things like that.)
This Cool Stick I Found: Just a stick that looked really cool. If you pretend hard enough it can be amazing things. (So the fun of this one is that on the surface it seems like a useless stick, but it's actually a super powerful stick that can transform into whatever you imagine as long as it's the same vague shape. But it only works when you imagine with your eyes closed so you're never really sure if it worked)

I relate to this heavily
Here's to the people who can't get the words on the page. The people who are too tired after all life throws at them to write. The people who are blocked. The people who are burnt out. The people who can't write because of physical or mental illnesses. The people who don't know why they can't write. And the people struggling with all those other things that get in the way of writing and make it seem or be impossible.
You're still a writer, you're still an artist. And you matter. This world is better since you're in it. Thank you for wanting to write, even if you can't right now. I hope you and your words find each other soon.

Genre Maybe-Specific TTRPG Plot Hooks to Fuck With Your Players
This Play is a Disaster: Your players, being known from their adventures, are invited to be guests of honor at a play!! However, the play's main cast has gone missing minutes before opening! Scripts be damned, players have to put on a play or this night is going to be a disaster! Not to mention the group of ne'er-do-wells trying to sabotage you the whole time. Can players defend the theater and put on a good play at the same time?? Probably not!
Night of the Living Pancake: Your players come across a Waffle House. Being miles away from civilization and extremely hungry, they decide, against better judgement, to eat at Waffle House. This isn't a normal waffle house though, the only workers here are living food, and they want to eat you!! Players must defend themselves from these food zombies while also finding out where they're all coming from.
Where are my Nuts?: Players are approached by a talking squirrel that says he's lost his magical wishing nuts!! He's no adventurer, but he has a bit of magic in him that he can use to turn you all into animals so you can go into Tree City and retrieve his magic wishing nuts.

I can def be an asshole sometime, but I do think one of the goals of this blog is to less agressively recommend games that aren't D&D to people. Lady Emily's recent post visavis indie ttrpgs does kinda exemplify an issue in how the community will often be assholes and recommend hyper niche games, instead of going "Hey WOTC is a racist monopoly, here's something else you can play that's also good and also malleable". + I've seen people just be huuuuge assholes about reccing games and im like. whats your angle here?
Anyways this is why I recommend TSL

On Monday I'll be playing Abducted by Franco Lopez with @milkboygames! Abducted is a solo or two player TTRPG (obviously we'll be using the two-player rules) about a human being who has been abducted by aliens. I'm very excited for this stream because I've been wanting to play something with Maddie for AGES!
Before starting the Incredibly Indie series, I hadn't played a ton of two-player games and was honestly intimidated by them. It feels a lost more intimate to play a TTRPG with just one other person, and the fewer people playing a game, the more creative work each person has to do to keep things interesting. But each time I've played a two-player game, it's been so rewarding, and I have such a soft spot for each person who has played one with me on stream.
As usual, I'll have some fun things that viewers can do to impact the game and the stream! For every TTRPG stream, I make unique actions that viewers can redeem channel points to activate. (For people unfamiliar with Twitch, channel points are a free currency you get passively while watching streams). Usually things like playing sound effects or making something happen on the overlay.
If you enjoy supporting indie TTRPGs, swing by on Monday and say hello! And if you're a game designer who would love to have a one-shot of your game to use as an example of play but don't want to (or can't) produce one, you can submit your game to be played!

Customizing & marking your Masks in Little Wolves
In Little Wolves, players make physical changes to masks they wear during play.
These Marks represent trials they’ve overcome and favors they’ve done for The Forest's Queens and real, physical changes their characters undergo as a result, all in addition to counting as XP!
Marks come in many shapes, like antlers, leaves, runes, scars, little creatures, gems and more. Along with a mask template to help people make & customize their masks, we’re also creating mark templates that can be colored, cut, and glued in place.
Oh, and were designing vinyl sticker sheets with a wide range of marks you can easily stick on, too!
If you’d like to know more, follow Little Wolves on BackerKit and be ready for our crowdfunding campaign to launch May 14th!

broke: calling them a DM because you learned it from DnD
woke: calling them a GM because it's a more neutral/universal ttrpg term
bespoke: using a different term each time, each from an obscure game, and refusing to elaborate when they ask you why you just called them 'Groundskeeper' or sth
