What up, how are you doing, no, how are you really doing? Do you remember how optimistic you were only 7 weeks ago? Do you still have it, the optimism or has it waned? Well unfortunately the key isn’t optimism it’s in consistency. It’s reasonable to believe that the reason you and I haven’t had the success we wanted in years prior is we don’t have the habits essential to fostering success, and when we started this year we implemented some very ambitious objectives driving us in that direction, bu to our surprise, our old habits came creeping back in, procrastination, distractions, oversleeping, lack of focus, to name a few. These will continue to haunt us both unless we decide enough is enough. Something I just learned recently as regards dieting: that people start the year with the objective of going to the gym five days a week without building the muscles for such radical change, instead of setting the goal to do once per week or 10 minutes per day. The analogy made was that people want to sit in the CEO chair on day one without knowing where the mailroom is. Maybe we should start smaller, maybe today we should set the goal to work with less distractions, work five minutes longer, work to complete a to-do list, build success momentum and increase our productivity from there. Like many, I still haven’t found my groove, even at 34 . You’d figure doing this thing called life for so long you’d have it figured out, but in my case it’s taking a bit longer than the 19 year old me expected. How’s it going for you? When you set your destination in your GPS you are very confident that if you follow the turn by turn directions you’ll eventually reach your destination. While often times it’s an area you don’t know or haven’t been before you know that it’s a reliable system of travel. Even when you miss a turn, or an exit your confidence doesn’t waver. Similarly if we know what our destination is, if we have defined success based on our own parameters, and make strides towards it daily, shouldn’y we still be confident that eventually we will get there. YES. It’s okay to recalculate, reassess, you missed turns and missed exits but make sure we pay closer attention to the turn by turn instructions that will guide us to our destination. How come when we fall off on our annual resolutions we don’t have the same vigor to start them again. Why do we feel so pumped and ambitious going into a new year but no so much going into a new week, a new day, when the opportunity is identical. Who set the end of the year as the official clock reset and think about how much that mindset is holding us back long term. Isn’t it though? Theres the cliche statement that says, if it was easy everyone would do it. I see consistency as the biggest obstacle to overcome and self-awareness being a gift and a curse. There are two statements I just said out of my own mouth that are obvious theoretically but difficult in application. The first is everyone wants to go the gym one day and lift 200 pounds but success lies with the person that lifts 50 pounds everyday, consistency is the key. The other is the importance of self-awareness and how essential it is for success but it can also be a curse. Self awareness helps you to have unparalleled clarity in moments you aren’t being your best and it can be so depressing to choose to lose even if for short periods. This one was a bit different from my other posts, firstly as I wanted to share my naked truth but when I write these Im often battling my negative thinking and pushing through to have small successes through the day. Maybe you never get over this feeling, maybe the goal is the depression drives you to lose less. Learning what drives you and more importantly keeps you driven is a key to being consistent. Self evaluation and self awareness are so invaluable to achieving at higher levels. This is the reason a coach and a mentor is so awesome addition to your team as they can help you build discipline, identify your blind spots, and guide you to make better decisions daily. I have always had an issue with consistency and it is something I continue to work at even at 33. There a philosophy that if you do something, no matter how small, everyday, consistently you’ll help build your discipline muscle. But here’s something worth asking yourself, is there anything that you do everyday consistently, do you have routines that are helping you build success? Self- awareness is one of the most underrated virtues there is. It’s not something that we give a lot of credit even though it is extremely valuable to happiness and success. It is the ability to appreciate where you are in relation to the world at large. Are you conscious of what success means for you, are you connected to when you aren’t feeling motivated and what causes you to feel that way. Do you appreciate how far you are from your self-definition of success and more importantly do you know what you need to do today to move you closer to your goals. Today while I will work to accomplish all the tasks on my list a few setbacks can easily spark the feeling of pessimism, but I’m aware of that and for this reason, today I’m desperate to have some small wins to overcome this negative feeling. If you haven’t yet maybe its best to write them down strategize step by step how you’d incrementally reach your objective. Either way now that you have enough data you can measure your productivity in month one to determine what adjustments are necessary in month two. Its still so early in the journey don’t start judging yourself yet.
