Now and Next
Now and next was a quick and easy task of recreating an iconic frame from a comic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The top is the original and the bottom is the remake.I used the same technique of using the dark or black areas to recreate the image

Max Fleischer
Tumblr media
Max Fleischer was inspired by his owns dogs and ‘mans best friend’, this led to him creating a series of characters which became famous even today still seeing the creations of max’s character. The first dog or character drawn was the clowns pup, the earliest animation in 1919.  The dog was created or shown being created by another character Koko the clown.
In 1923 the Studio hired Dick Huemer as  Head Animator. Huemer brought with him his own personal style, which asn the slight variation in Koko’s appearance. But the biggest contribution Huemer made was to give Koko an animated partner in crime, a mischievous little white dog with a black spot on his back called Fitz.
The dog without a name
The dog that was featured in the 1926 film ‘My old Kentucky home’ it holds a special place in animation history.
The challenges in early sound development was, synchronising a characters mouth movement with the words they were speaking. Utilising what they had at the time, but even that the equipment was counted as cutting edge technology.
The many faces of Bimbo
With the introduction to sound in animation and the popularity to ‘talkies’. The Fleischers quickly shifted towards sound cartoons, including the 1929 Talkartoon, with that introducing the fourth Talkartoon Bimbo.
He was an all-white dog, like fitz, but his personality and design was different. Max’s son described him as a tougher, cigar chewing, somewhat lecherous piano-playing jazz hound.

Machines  idea
The next idea which is the most practical one is to create a dystopian world where machines have evolved and taken the planet. This made humans un-able to live and have to live in the machines regime.
I say this being the most practical by being able to create many character and scenes also allowing to open many doors to animation and illustration but also being able to create 3D models. I could also make a sequence of scrap books about this.

Human Encounters Idea
Human encounters was an obvious one which included meeting strange, interesting or just meeting people in public. This allows me to gather different stories.
People are interesting but dangerous and have the most power over everything or try too, so encountering people who have everything or nothing is interesting. If I was to use the idea I would have to spend days outside watching and sketching interactions between people.
Sadly this may become to difficult to use this idea due to 2019 outbreak and is hard to go outside at the moment.

Disappear Idea
The second idea for the encounter project is to investigate an elaborate on an Idea that if humans suddenly disappeared and how different species have to encounter man made structures rotting away over time.
Many times I liked to look at “what if” and how the world in a few hundred years would change.

Dreams Idea
Dreams concept is another idea to show or express encounter. In dreams you can encounter anything from dinosaurs to memories of childhood. Sometimes you can have nightmares which are bad memories of movies, books or just encounters through life.
The 6 most common dreams are:
Falling, being chased, flying, loosing teeth, failing a test or the most bizarre one is being naked in public.
The artist that use dreams as a starting point are Salvador Dalí, 1931-The Persistence of Memory.
Tumblr media
Salvador Dalí is probably the most famous and renown representative of Surrealism. He even thought of his paintings as “hand-painted dream photographs". But the movement he belonged to is not only about a lack of logic scenarios; just like dreams, they have elements of reality, which can be seen, in the case of this painting, on the cliffs at the back, which represent the Coast of Catalonia, his native land.
Max Ernst
Tumblr media
Finally, this painting is the ultimate dream depiction. When he exhibited his work, he assured that it was inspired by a dream he had after having a fever due to measles. In this work, unrelated elements take over an everyday scenario. The fence that comes out of the canvas can be interpreted as the gate to the most intimate corners of his mind.
This idea may work for me by showing nightmares or a dream in which shows encounters to a different level.

Dystopia
an imagined state or society in which there is great suffering or injustice, typically one that is totalitarian or post-apocalyptic. Compared with utopia which is an enjoyable world
Dystopia is one of the main words used in my encounter project which is based round a ever growing world of futuristic, retro machines that travel the earth.
I want elaborate on the fact that many artists used retro machines and dystopian worlds, but I want to design it in my own way. I want to see sky-scraping machines towering over cities, misplaced robots hunting life. I would like to follower and create images like Simon Stalenhag did or other concept illustrators have done in the past, where they would go out take pictures and then tweak them to show a brand new exciting image. But I want to tell a story in which a character encounter strange people and observations which would not exist in this day of age, making the character scavenge and move on to different parts of United Kingdom. I could take advantage of the 2020 outbreak of the virus and move into the fact that man-made machines are hunting survivors but time will tell.

Post it-comic workshop Encounters Week 4 | Tuesday 24/3/20:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In this workshop we created 6 comic book post it note designs showing different ways to create a story. I chose to design mine based on the struggles of 2020 and the virus, forest fires and Kobe Bryant's death. All happening in 2020.
This intrigued me to chose this because it was and still is a terrible year so far that is why I chose it. But I used a fine liner and a pencil and created two which are more detailed than the other.
More on that I could improve by creating a more fine, tight line work on all the post its and created a longer story to it and use paint or different medias.
According to Scott Mcloud, What is a comic?:
Comics are a juxtaposed pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence, intended to convey information and/or to produce an aesthetic response in the viewer
What does it mean by Non-Sequential or Non-sequitur comics?:
Non sequitur is a literary device that includes statements, sayings, and conclusions that do not follow the fundamental principles of logic and reason. They are frequently used in theatre and comedies to create comedic effect.
This means that
Do you believe Mclouds theory is correct, if so how?:
How might this be an interesting idea to explore?:

Out of control
In today session we had to use the observational skill drawing and using continuous line to create a abstract piece of art using different materials and medias. We first used A4 piece of paper to create a drawing of an object, mine was a sea shell about 5cm wide.
The third part was to create on a A2 piece of paper which Is was stuck to the wall and did the exact same thing but larger which was a struggle because I am used to drawing on a surface like a desk or a table.  This improved the image a bit by having to add more detail to our work
Then we gathered into groups of three and created again but chopped the images into three and created an abstract piece of art

Close encounter
In today session, the aim was to review the elements of visual language to illustrated & animated ideas to create frame to frame animation of a photo and transform them into a alien like creature. To start we experimented with working from a reference to develop imagined responses to a specific ideas ,review the principle of pose to pose and morph animations ,to develop a working process of terms and technical nuances of frame by frame animation and finally to be able to use and review and integrated approach to 2D and 4D problem solving in art & design.
We had a look at art work by Katsushika Hokusai and Will Sweeney to gain ideas and concepts and then we were told to look at both of these image, describe what visual language elements that are there.
Tumblr media
 Katsushika Hokusai
Tumblr media
 Will Sweeney
The second part we told to use Katsushika Hokusai sketch book and and create faces like the one in the book. We chose a image of a character from random and sketch them out as simple as we could and then was told to morph these characters into alien like creatures using frame by frame animation.
Returning to frame by frame animation help me understand and reconfigure the technique by allowing me to create a 10 second animation.

Ray Johnson
Ray Johnson (1927-1995) was a seminal Pop Art figure in the 1950s, an early conceptualist, and a pioneer of mail art. His preferred medium was collage, that quintessentially twentieth-century art form that reflects the increased (as the century wore on) collision of disparate visual and verbal information that bombards modern man. Integrating texts and images drawn from a multiplicity of sources — from mass media to telephone conversations — Johnson’s innovativeness spread beyond the confines of the purely visual. He staged what Suzi Gablik described in Pop Art Redefined as perhaps the “first informal happening” and moved into mail art, artist books, graphic design, and sculpture, working in all modes simultaneously. Johnson not only operated in what Rauschenberg famously called "the gap between art and life," but he also erased the distinction between them. His entire being – a reflection of his obsessively creative mind – was actually one continuous "work of art." His works reflect his encyclopedic erudition, his promiscuous range of interests, and an uncanny proto-Google ability to discover connections between a myriad of images, facts and people.
Tumblr media
On the day of his death he was seen dressed in black and jumping off a bridge and was ruled out as a suicide. Later many found that he was speculated with the number 13, such as his age which was 67(6+7=13) and his room number which he booked into earlier 247 (2+4+7=13).  His artwork was greatly appreciated throughout the world as collages were made in remembrance for him.
In his artwork, he uses normal life objects to create collages which are simple but understandable of what they are. Using the style of his collages with simple but extravagant colours I can create intristique designs for my project

Dustin Parker
Dustin Parker is an artist raised on a steady diet of Saturday morning cartoons, comic books, 1980s horror films and “The Joy of Painting.” As a child, Parker doodled dinosaurs on his homework and made comicstrips about vampires. As an adult, Parker earns his pizza dough designing t-shirts, drawing illustrations and selling paintings in art galleries. Parker creates digital illustrations depicting maniacal monsters and oddball characters using traditional comic book illustration techniques. Parker’s illustrations are characterized by bold line work, garish colors and gritty textures. When Parker isn’t drawing flaming skulls or anthropomorphic pizza creatures, he is constructing abstract and figurative collage paintings using multiple layers of paint and found paper, such as old comic books, maps, instruction manuals and sheet music. Parker is an artist that holds Jack Kirby, Richard Diebenkorn and Francis Bacon in equal esteem. Parker lives and works in Wichita, KS.
Tumblr media
I have gone and chosen Dustin Parker due to the complex designs he has such as monster designs, his creative way of showing movies in a cartoonistic form. Furthermore using an interesting colour palette of vibrant yet simple materials. Mostly his art is done through a computer base program like Adobe illustrator. I am intrigued by his design and artistic way of showing his art because myself enjoy changing the way a character object looks to give a different vibe.
Tumblr media
The image below is one of many designs that Dustin Parker has created and this represents a dream he had when he was 10 years old. So Dustin being able to paint a dream is amazing due to being able to recall key details which most can not do. Dustin uses a range of different materials such as paint, acrylic, water colours

Simon Stalenhag
Simon Stalenhag was born on 20th January 1984. He is a Swedish artist, video game developer and musician, best known for his science fiction inspired paintings of retro futuristic landscapes. He currently resides in Kungsholmen in Stockholm and was educated in game design at Future Games Academy. Stålenhag produces his paintings digitally using a computer and digital drawing board, in a style that mimics oil or acrylic painting. He has described his images as, “cultural Swedish landscapes from the 80-90’s, populated with robots and dinosaurs.”
Tumblr media
Simon Stalenhags work is all digital with a hint or acrylic. He was inspired by many objects such as classical 80’s retro robots and designed them into backgrounds of swedish landscapes. I chose to research this artist as going further into the project encounter and the dystopian idea. Stalenhags work is very precise on line work and colour palette. He mostly uses natural colours but uses more colour depending on which style of robot he wants. Example of this is the picture above, he uses a natural base with the highway and grass colours but has the point of a bright blue representing the point he wants people to see.
He uses very  bland and desaturated colours for the base but then use a range of colours for the objects. He uses acrylic style to his art but are not actually paint but a computer base program
Tumblr media
They are the product of his childhood memories -- growing up in suburban Stockholm and painting landscapes and wildlife -- and his adulthood appreciation for sci-fi.
Stålenhag published two more narrative artbooks, "Things from the Flood" in 2016 (a sequel to "Tales from the Loop") and "The Electric State" in 2017. The latter isn't set in Sweden but in a fictional US megastate called Pacifica, which corresponds roughly to California, Oregon and Washington. It was inspired by a trip to the West Coast and the photos he took there.
"I always start by going out and taking photos, trying to find cool locations that I take tons of reference photos of. Then I play around with these images and paint on top of them in Photoshop and just try things out," he explained.
"When I've found something I like, I start over and do these huge paintings which are basically traditional media, because I do everything with brushstrokes and don't use any photo textures."
