08/18/11: Distal
Distal is an amazing producer, the kind of musician who's able to soak up the numerous micro-genres hovering around all DJ's in these almost-post-record store times, yet use them to alchemize a final product that doesn't fit squarely into any of said genres.
Here Distal drops a tiiight sojourn into his own jams and compositions he's currently feeling, proving that he's not just another "juke-influenced" producer, but an all around ill musician.
Stay tuned to hear him talk about how his Atlantian (dirty south, not mythical underwater metropolis) background has shaped his DJ and song-writing style, his own Embassy Recordings, plus his upcoming projects including his huge Tectonic LP.

08/11/11: DJ Rashad
DJ Rashad is one of the leaders of juke's continuing march into the brains of music lovers in all realms outside Chicago, and for good reason.  While he can throw down straight up buuurrrnnn-ass Juke tracks with the best of  them, he's also into just about anything, and has the creative mind and production chops to bring a myriad of influences into his tracks.  He's also a KILLER DJ, which this set more than proves; I had listeners IM/Text me during this set to remark it was one of the better Rashad DJ set's they'd ever heard.
No interview, just straight bangers for mad long :-O

08/04/11: Kingdom
Kingdom is perhaps one of the most talked about producers in the world of bassy/interesting/electronic dance music these days. His notorious ability to flip tired UK standards and add an undeniably sexy, R&B, American edge to them has him in-demand across this great planet of ours.  He displays the trademark of a great talent: the ability to create an unforgetable jam using the simplest of ingredients.  Plus he co-founded and runs the Fade to Mind label, home to some of the most original and mind-blowing electronic music acts on the planet.
Don't miss this super eclectic exclusive DJ set, but REALLY don't miss a pretty fascinating interview at the end, where Kingdom talks his creative process (including the surprisingly spartan setup he used for hits like Take Me and Mindreader), the spark that lead to the nascent Fade to Mind label (plus what we can soon expect from the excellent imprint), working in NYC vs. LA, and the future of music itself.

07/14/11: DJ Spinn (DJ Set + Interview)
DJ Spinn has been a major pioneer in the transition from ghettohouse / ghettotech to what is now internationally known as Juke.  Along with his Ghetto Teknicianz crew, DJ Spinn stands alongside the other masters of Chicago dance music, past and present, both as a producer and a DJ.
Spinn ain't old, but he's definitely a vet of the game and had a lot of interesting things to say about the evolution of house music and his individual career path. Since this was a prerecord (and Spinns chill as heck), we were lucky enough to get a great interview AND a really tight DJ set.
By now you should know what happens when these cats from Chicago come to Math + Science.  They drop a blistering, face-melting, hell of tight mix packed with originals, exclusives, rarities, classics, obscurities, bangs & works.

June: Saved By The Rhythm
OK so by now this webpage / radio show has already introduced you to the mighty Broken Teeth Crew.  These guys span Texas, NYC, and I think Berlin, Mars, Hades, The Shire, The Matrix...they roll deep.  Among these illustrious DJs/producers/promoters/artists etc. are Ace & Black Lauren aka Saved By The Rhythm, two producer-DJs who have a sound that I really think can be best described by the word "smoooooth".  As in, "wow, when I drank champagne off that stripper's freshly Nair'd bewbz it tasted exceedingly smoooooth".
They're DJs first, but they've been producing lately and the results are tight (stay tuned for more on that in the near future wink wink).  You can hear some originals in this mix, but mostly you can hear how nice these guys get on the decks...its a really collllddd combination of soulful R&B-infused house and dark, "just one more K line i promise" backroom techno.

07/21/11: Cousin Cole
I first met Cousin Cole when a young man named Tali (now essentially a Dutty Artz globe trotting bass journalist) hired Cole, Rezound, and me to play a party at Bard College.  I'd been scratching alone in my bedroom for years but this was like the 3rd time I was DJing a party-type party in my whole life.  I was quite nervous, and on the ride up to the campus I remember asking Cole what kind of music he spun.  He said something along the lines of, "Y'know...whatever the situation calls for."
This remains a fairly accurate representation of the man's body of work.  A lot of music fans will know Cole as a deadly remixer, and this show is a testament to that fact.  A lot of DJs can mix anything with anything, but it would seem Cole can remix anything and have it come out sounding better on the other end.  Everything from sweaty-lazer'd-out moombahton to The Boss to fixed-gear-skinny-white-people-hand-clapping-anthems to just straight up house jams all benefit from a Cousin Cole remix.
I don't want to downplay dude's DJ skills w/all this talk of remixing, either.  And I've sorta skipped his bio.  But just check this mix out srsly.  Especially the Bruce remix.

05/26/11: LDFD
LDFD (Broken Teeth) has been making big moves as of late. The Texan producer and DJ has had a rad tumblr for a minute now, just released a serious Distal remix, has been working with Daedelus (who has a remix on LDFD's upcoming EP), and has generally been dropping some outstanding tracks and mixes into the aether.
Tune in for a ballin', prerecorded mix that manages to stay tonal, glitchy, and gutter all at the same time...plus check the informative telephonic interview (pardon the sound quality).

07/01/11: LOL Boys
Early this summer at HRN studios in Bushwick I sat down with Jerome, one 1/2 of North American club duo LOL Boys, who've been tearing up sound systems across planet Earth with releases on Palms Out and remixes for Nightshifters, Mad Decent, Sound Pellegrino & a host of other outlets for taste-makery.
He dropped 90 minutes of the eclectic, percussion-heavy, raved-out DJ style they're known for (including some exclusive originals), then blessed us with musings on making tracks, the origin of the group, how the web affects their art, the state of electronic music at large, and how to choose the most appropriate AIM 'ding' whilst DJing.
Tight jams and real talk from a talented dude.

05/12/11: Boyfriend
We don't normally do this, but young buck Boyfriend, a hell of talented producer and DJ out of Lithuania, let us premiere his new Wine & Dine Mixtape entitled "NXT LVL". From his Baltic stronghold, Vytis Gruzdys has embraced the US moombahton sound, and then flipped it into something decidedly more cold, weird, intense and original. In addition to being a crazy talented producer he's also a top notch DJ, and manages to create a mix here that not only captures his unique sound, geographical sensibilities, and production chops, but one that has a lot of love for other forms of American urban music as well–from the Biggie intro to the samples on DJ Melo’s “Star Time” to the DC/Bmore stylings of Cam Jus, Boyfriend melds these jams like no one else can.

05/05/11: Jason Forest
Jason Forest aka Dj Donna Summer can officially be described as a mogul: not only is he the co-founder of the amazing Nightshifters label, the founder of the seminal Cock Rock Disco imprint (whose releases helped inspire this radio show half a decade ago), and a veteran sample-chopping laptop-maestro and innovator...he also runs the amazing online TV station Network Awesome. Here we find him leaping multiple genres in a single bound, twisting German rappers, dubstep wobblers, freaky film scores, and glitched-out electronics into sixty minutes that are a testament to the man's talent and eclectic technique. His new album is called "The Everything" and is outstanding.

04/28/11: Jubilee
Jubilee is one of my favorite DJs in NYC. She's mega-versatile, technical without being surgical, mad eclectic, and always comes correct. Plus she runs Nightshifters with Jason Forest and rocks the Flashing Lights monthly w/Nick Catchdubs. She reps South FL, and this 2 hour heater really highlights her ability to sculpt many, many different sounds around a miami-bass backbone.

04/21/11: The Phantom, Zeppy Zep
Last week The Phantom and Zeppy Zep flew in from Poland and dropped two amazing guest sets. Both of these fellas are super talented producers AND DJs, and have a slew of remixes and compilation tracks already available and soon to come...though you may know them from their "PL Funky" comp on Top Billin'. They both play a lot of originals--their own and each others'--and are indicative of the familial, close-knit vibe you get from the Polish electronic scene (a subject we discuss in the brief interview at the end of the show). We recorded at a studio I built a few years ago in Bushwick, BK (behind Roberta's Pizza)...hence the boar's head.
Tracklist to come.

03/31/11: Brenmar & Physical Therapy
Chicago native Brenmar has been kiiiiiiiling it in NYC and all over the globe. The man can weave the sultry, silky touch of R&B into the rock-hard, steel frame of juke and the energized, repeating grid of house music...and do it so well that you'd think he invented all three genres. Hell, you might think he invented DJing. And he sure as hell invented the numerous original cuts in this mix, which are easily the highlights.
Alongside Brenmar, at the decks for his own session and then b2b, is Physical Therapy. Physical Therapy's love for all of the hands-in-the-air, neon, plastic,sped-up-rapper & slowed-down-diva memes of rave music converge into a listening experience that is equal parts nostalgia and truly inventive.
Don't miss these two masters at work, going hard for the whole show, including a friendly chat with yours truly, Wreck Tech.
