Ty shares, "Each body of work revolves through a specific expression of our personal journeys and the tension that exists in those memories. Surface Spectrum Artist Feature: Richard Downs @richard_downs . . Northern California artist Richard Downs transfigures steel, twisted wire, painting and printmaking into a visual mythology celebrating human connectedness. Classically trained, Richard emerged out of Art Center Pasadena as an accomplished printmaker and visual storyteller inspired by Russian Constructivism and the “Kustomizer” car culture of the 1950s and 60s. During his more than 30 years of dedication to the fine arts, Richard Downs exhibits his sculptures, etchings and paintings throughout the United States and galleries in Atlanta, GA and Seattle, WA. . . In 2017 Richard was named a finalist for the Fire Station 15 Public Art Project for the city of Sacramento. Surface Spectrum Artist Feature: John Monn @john_monn John Monn is an interdisciplinary artist who lives and works in Los Angeles. His work utilizes a range of materials, creating theatrical installations, paintings, and sculpture amongst others. Monn’s practice currently centers around a repetitious process of gestural models sketched in 3D. The models help hone fluid forms to then craft objects that inspire introspection. John also plays with scale both digitally and with physical objects presented in ways to alter perception and to spike curiosity in materials and environment. Artist Feature: Stephen D'Onofrio @stephenadonofrio Stephen D’Onofrio is a contemporary visual artist focused in painting. His work is characterized by an interest in the home decor market, the mass commodification of art, and the generic visual language that accompanies commercial design. He received his MFA from The School of The Art Institute of Chicago in 2016 and his work has been placed in numerous private and public collections since. D’Onofrio has lived and worked in Philadelphia since being awarded an artist residency in the city at Jasper Studios in 2017. D’Onofrio is represented by Galleri Urbane. D’Onofrio’s Untitled Still Life paintings are part of Market Research, a new body of work that begins to pull apart the images of the commercial art and design industry that my work has been recently driven by. In these works I continue to use the classical composition of a still life, but instead of taking a passive approach of displaying these images, I am examining them through dissections and colliding juxtapositions. The new paintings expand their reach of what they are pulling from, looking at popular gradients and color combinations, to images evocative of logos and signage. Market Research serves as somewhat of a field study for collecting and acquiring the images and pop patterns of today's commercial world and brings them back to my still life composition for further examination. Surface Spectrum Artist Feature: Jaybo Monk @jaybomonk Jaybo Monk is French artist born 1968 who lives in Berlin on a constant journey. With his store of memories he explores the world and draws an emotional topography of his life, consisting of half hidden visual fragments of memory that are revealing and timeless at the same time. Jaybo is co-founder of the culture and fashion magazine “Style and the Family Tunes” and the fashion label “Iriedaily”. Both enterprises have been influential on Berlin’s youth culture and fashion community. Urban subculture remains the driving force behind all of his artistic activities. In 2003, he received a degree in Graphic Design from The Art Institute of Philadelphia. Perhaps best known for his cut, painted and assembled wood pieces, he also works in a variety of other mediums including steel, collage and pen & ink on paper, panel, sculptures and murals. His work has been published and exhibited both domestically and internationally. Scott has collaborated with a number of clients including Paypal, the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), Rag & Bone, Vans and Blue Moon Brewing Co. In addition to showing at Mash Gallery, Albrecht is currently participating in the Holdout residency in Portugal. Surface Spectrum Artist Feature: Vanessa Barragão Vanessa Barragão designs textiles suitable for a museum installation. Vanessa was born in Albufeira, in the south of Portugal. Her studio was founded in 2014 when she attended a Master degree program at the Lisbon University in fashion and textile design. There she developed her first wool yarn collection and tapestries through an ecological artisanal process. Full Moon is a sensorial rug with quite a unique goal: to make people feel like they are in harmony within their own universe and totally focused on themselves. For the artist, the surface of the Moon represents a tranquil place with its particular lack of sound and gravity and to find a similar environment on Earth, one must dive deep into the ocean. The shapes of this rug are inspired by the different blurs of the Moon’s gravity field and the coral reefs of the sea.
