When Do Babies Grow Out of Needing Contact Naps?
One of the most important and difficult things about being a new parent is making sure your child gets enough sleep. A touch nap is a time when a parent or caretaker holds the child the whole time they sleep. During the first few hours and days after birth, your baby will only be able to take contact naps.
However, as time goes on, it gets easier for them to calm down on their own and more normal for them to sleep on their own. Our blog post today discusses how to tell if your child is ready to take naps on their own so you can relax. If you have any advice or stories to share in this area, please let us know in the comments!

More awareness and activity for exploring
In time, your baby will naturally become more curious about the world. If your baby refuses to take a contact nap or becomes easily distracted during this period, it may indicate that they are prepared to transition to the next sleep setting. "Even when we try to help our baby sleep, it just seems like he or she isn't comfortable on us anymore," is a common complaint I hear.
Longer stretches of sleep at night
It's a positive sign that the baby is getting into their more fully formed sleep cycles if they sleep longer at night. If you see that they sleep for longer periods of time at night, they might be ready to sleep alone during the day.
Signs of Development
Between 4 and 6 months, your baby should be achieving physical milestones like being able to sit up and roll over, and they should also be more aware of and active in their bodies in general. This could indicate a preference for independence from constant holding.
Cutting short naps
In "full contact" form, their naps may be getting shorter, indicating they want more freedom. Try putting them down in their bassinet or bed for the rest of the nap after they fall asleep. They might get more rest and sleep longer!
Remember
Not all babies are the same! They may not display all of these signs simultaneously or in order. A gentle approach and attention to your child's needs will get you through.
