If I go to the protest tomorrow in DC, what can I expect to happen? I've never been to one before

Bring plenty of water.

Wear something comfortable and easy to walk in.

You should expect your cell phone signal to go out while in the most crowded areas of the protest.

Be prepared to stand around a lot. Generally the way that large protests like today's work is that you stand around and listen to a bunch of speakers, and then everyone in the crowd slowly marches along a pre-determined route until they arrive at a final destination where the protest continues (in DC this is usually either the White House or the Capitol building).

Especially if this is your first protest, then you don't really have to do anything except be there and maybe join the crowd in some chants. Don't stress yourself out worrying that there's something "expected" of you, your very presence shows your support. You do not have to take any risks that you are not comfortable taking.

In general, do not share photographs of the protest that feature other people's faces unless you have their permission. I generally make sure to go through any protest photos I post with a blur tool first, and then I post a screenshot of the blurred original photo so that it can't be easily deblurred.

Depending on the size/energy/attendance, it is possible that you will see other people at the protest engaging in risky activities— graffiti, climbing structures, obstructing active roadways, evading arrest, etc., etc. Do not draw attention to them, and do not mention anything you see to the police; mind your business. (But this type of thing is more common at more radical protests, so you'd be more likely to see it at today's Palestine protest than at today's general anti-Trump protest.)

If you see someone in a neon orange/yellow/etc. vest, they are probably a marshal, someone who works with the protest organizers to direct the crowd and help protesters as needed. You can approach them and ask questions if you have a problem.

You don't have much to worry about, honestly. I've been to lots of protests and more than 90% of them happen without any problems. I feel like a lot of people intimidate themselves out of going to protests because they fear all of the uncertainty that comes with doing so. But most protests are just public gatherings of people who have joined together to express similar political frustrations. Absorb the atmosphere, strike a conversation with some fellow protesters, try to learn more, be open to the experience.

if you're sociable, it's important to make sure your introverted friends feel included in the group. when there's a lull in the conversation, ask them what their greatest weakness or desire is. if anyone else tries to speak, tell them to be quiet and pay attention
