If I ever make a superhero film, it will be a mixture of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy and Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel.

I don’t get sentimental about stuff like this. (I’m also slow to give complements.) But the 20th anniversary of Spider-Man 2 strikes an emotional chord in me. I can’t put into words how just how much I adore this film. It’s just……amazing. (I actually had the pleasure of watching a re-release of it in a movie theater back in April with my mom.) 🥹

Do I still crave the Fury Road sequel, Wasteland, with Tom Hardy back as Mad Max? Absolutely! Nevertheless, I’m grateful that Furiosa was a film made with care, integrity, and texture. Now why it’s not a box office hit remains debatable. Is Mad Max not big enough a franchise/IP to rake in big profits? Is it because people can’t afford to go to movie theaters right now given the current state of the economy? Have the streaming services changed the dynamics/economics of watching a film? Is it possible that Wasteland could’ve been more profitable? Your guess is as good as mine. (If nothing else, make Wasteland for HBO Max! It’s still possible.)

Don’t get me wrong, Michael Keaton is a great Batman. His portrayal is historic. But if I was Tim Burton, I would’ve casted Timothy Dalton as Batman. I mean he looks exactly what Bruce Wayne would look like on film! I’ll take it a step further, he’s the best actor not to play the character! I’m even inclined to think that Dalton would’ve been the definitive Batman in the same way Tobey Maguire and Henry Cavill are the definitive portrayals of Spider-Man and Superman. (Christian Bale and Ben Affleck are equally great in the role, I think.)

Guy Ritchie’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare starring Henry Cavill is a WW2 pulp adventure that is an amalgamation of The Untouchables, The Rock, and, of course, Inglorious Batards. Can’t go wrong with that dynamic!

Had I been making an Iron Man film in 2008/2009, I would’ve casted Kevin Dillion in the role of Tony Stark.
This scene from Entourage alone would’ve justified his casting in the role, I think. (Seriously, this is textbook Tony Stark right here!)
I truly believe that if push came to shove, Dillion would’ve disappeared into the role and you would hardly recognize his stardom. Also, I would’ve literally tried to make the Iron Man equivalent of Watchmen with a much grittier, more ambiguous take on the character. And instead of trying to kickstart a shared cinematic universe, we would’ve just made a trilogy that is fiercely independent from the Disney guidelines or censors.
(Other actors on my shortlist would’ve included Chris Evans and Henry Cavill.)

I watched Kingdom of the Planet of The Apes. I liked it. It’s a movie that examines how the apes will adapt to a post apocalyptic world where they are the dominant species. Do they become more civilized and independent like the humans? Or do they live under a monarchy? Very interesting philosophical debate. Also I’m glad the franchise’s integrity hasn’t been torpedoed or compromised especially considering that 20th Century Fox (now Studios) has become a partner of Disney. In other words, I’m glad the Disney overlords didn’t perpetrate their influence on this IP.
