Fruit and vegetable illustrations - A to Z

This year for Inktober I drew a fruit or a vegetable (or a mushroom) each day, going from a to z then topping it off with a few miscellaneous choices. They’re all up on my Instagram.

Inktober 2018 - days 11 through 14

Inktober’s over, and my doodles are all finished, but I’m still going to post some compilations here on Tumblr, because they’re fun. The single illustrations for each day are on my instagram. 

These are the 11th to the 14th : K for kowari, L for lynx, M for markhor and N for numbat. Once again, to clarify, instead of following the official prompts, I just drew animals in alphabetical order. Drawn with pen on paper.

Inktober 2018 - days 7 through 10

More inktober drawings from my instagram. Instead of following the official prompts, I’m drawing animals in alphabetical order. 

These are the 7th to the 10th : G for gannet, H for hyena, I for ibex and J for jakana. These were from early in the month so: more incoming! Drawn with pen on paper.

Inktober 2018 - days 1 through 6

I’m doing inktober this year, over on my instagram! Instead of following the official prompts, I’m drawing animals in alphabetical order. Here are the first 6 : A for aardvark, B for bison, C for caracal, D for dik-dik, E for elk and F for fennec. More incoming! Hopefully we’ll make it to the end of the month. Drawn with pen on paper.

Eagle sketches - various species

Quick studies of different species of eagles: the Philippine serpent eagle (Spilornis holospilus), the ornate hawk-eagle (Spizaetus ornatus) and the harpy eagle (Harpia harpyja). Drawn with pencil on white paper.

Atlantic puffin (Fratercula arctica)

A naturalistic study of an Atlantic puffin, or common puffin, one of my favorite seabirds. Drawn with coloured pencils on white paper.

Thomson’s gazelle (Eudorcas thomsonii)

A naturalistic study of a male Thomson’s gazelle, also sometimes called a “tommie”. The males have longer horns, while the females have smaller, more fragile ones, and sometimes don’t have any at all. Drawn with coloured pencils on white paper.

Okapi (Okapia johnstoni) Okapis have really big ears, and they’re quite mobile too! Here’s a little pencil-drawn gif to show that off.

Okapis (Okapia johnstoni) A duo of okapis, with a female on the left and a male on the right. Only the males have “horns”, called ossicones, and giraffes have them too! Pencil for the linework plus digital colour.

Putting up a bit of a mix of everything on Instagram, and (hopefully) much more regular uploads!

Newly on Instagram! Where there’ll be more sketches, doodles, and some actual work. Zoology, botany, anthropology, medicine, maybe a bit of anatomy, lots of illustrations incoming and already a few food doodles for fun. See you there.

Golden snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus roxellana) An Old-World monkey this time. These are from central and southwest China, and are pretty recognisable with their bright colours, especially their blue-ish faces. They have a very flattened nose, which is where their name comes from. © Marie Ducom, 2018

Squirrel monkey (Saimiri genus, might be Saimiri sciureus) Another pose for the same species of New World monkey. Once again drawn in pencil and coloured digitally. They’re really light, from what I’ve read the males hardly go over 1kg and the females 750g, some species of the Saimiri genus weighing more than others. © Marie Ducom, 2018

Squirrel monkey (probably Saimiri sciureus) Drawn in pencil and coloured digitally, here’s a cutie pie of a squirrel monkey. They’re pretty small, living up in the canopy and eating fruits and insects. Native to South America, they live in small-to-huge groups, and are (thankfully) rated as “least concern” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. © Marie Ducom, 2018

Still posting new sketches on my second Tumblr, lots of ornithology recently, maybe a few more bird skulls (might do a whole skeleton at some point?) before I move on to some endangered species, or just big mammals.

Skull of (an?) Eleonora’s falcon, Falco eleonorae, named after Eleanor of Arborea (1347-1404) who was a very powerful Sardinian judge and avid ornithologist in her spare time. She passed a law protecting falcons, her favorite species. Part of the Falconidae family, in red and black coloured pencil.
