this definitely mirrors my experience with Hazbin hotel and the amount of loops I used to knot myself into just to explain away why I loved it and why it was perfect… until the series hit and there was this sinking undeniable feeling that I would be losing it forever. Cause at the time I didn’t have the critical community, and saying anything SLIGHTLY critical would make me lose friends lose colleagues lose followers and basic human respect. I began to grow colder distant and tired. I had to let go of it. In a way I guess you could say I haven’t fully. I mean I do own fanmade merch of my only favorite character and I do talk about it still- but you tell me how to drop a hyperfixation then we can talk lol.

How to properly create a readable reference… !

Using old pilot reference as an example, I’m here to expand on this to make a turn around sheet that will be more helpful to someone who would be looking at this while animating the design….

1st, get rid of the posing, it’s stretching anatomy and complicating the image, how will we be able to see how her shoulders rest if we can’t see her arms down at her sides? Leave poses for a separate page for exaggerated expressions

2nd, giving her a neutral expression can not only help us better balance the thickness of her lashes but also make the eye shape clearer- and where her features should rest naturally when she is calm. Giving the animator a consistent anchor after an especially exaggerated movement of the face. We always must have a proper clear default.

3rd, proper side angle, her arms pinned back slightly to expose her side, showing the animator how the shirt ends at the side or how the lapels connect to the back and wrap around the neck- which can be shown at the back angle too.

4th, proper back angle, you can see I have two set here one where her hair is out of the way and exposing her back while one had the hair fell down, showing us not only how the back of her shirt looks but as well as how her hair would fall- leaving nothing to imagination and guess which could have contributed to animation consistencies to the pilot art style. Preferably we would also have a straight on shot as well, but for space sake I left that out for now.

5th, all are in the same pose and all body parts match up, none of the hand on hip or out in an awkward position. We have to know in animation the BASICS then from there the animator is free to bend it in practical ways but will always know what the rules may be. It’s exactly why so many shows have animation bibles. The more information you feed your animators the more streamlined your project will be. Don’t make the animators work any harder then they already do by guessing what the hell you were going for…

6th, add ons, what is the inside of her mouth look? What about a place we can’t see such as her top lid (while also getting a view of what her lashes look like down at half lidded) or the underside of her foot? Leave no place left untold! Remember animation can help give your characters the illusion of living in a 3d environment. They can and will see the underside of them or behind them- work thoroughly.

Whether you are making animation or even a comic, a proper reference is crucial to character consistency as well as a perfect place to add additional information one might not see at first but grow incredibly vital in later drawings.

And from here in the first image it looks like STELLA is the one being iced out seeing as how the light is more focused on Stolas and Octavia, whereas the alt. just has her doing a Cruella laugh with the light on her and Stolas being the one in the dark while Octavia is mixed with the lighting AND the shadow.

(Also love how Stolas is more focused on his sex pawn that is the grimoire than his own daughter who's glaring at him; now THATS a message right there. He's more worried about his precious Blitzy not loving him than his own daughter being mad at him.)

I thought this interaction and the rough animator’s (Joyark_Toons) response was interesting so I wanted to share it.

So, basically I was scrolling through Instagram and stumbled across Joyark’s portion of what they worked regarding the Helluva Boss episode “Ghostfuckers.”

In the comment section a user asked: “What are your thoughts on how problematic Vivzie is????”

I was kind of impressed Joyark answered the question. But basically this is what they said:

Thank you. You make me feel sane for hating on vivs art😭 (she did influence my art in middle school, but now I see all the issues with it)

no problem! I think her art had a lot of bad influence on newer artists simply because at first glance it’s appealing and people like you (and me) thought why can’t we just copy it and go from there? Welllll problem is that just copying an artist will lead to you consuming and producing the mistakes they make or not fully grasp why they exaggerated something the way they did. Unfortunately those anime hating art teachers held some truth in their words, just copying right off of another artist without fully understanding the rules of art will lead to getting stuck.

I’ve gotten “stuck” before, my art deformed contorted to the style and gave me a mess where the heads were too big and the proportions too wonky when I could have spent my time understanding anatomy and proper colouring techniques. Of course there’s nothing wrong with just wanting pretty looking art and nothing more but if you want to expand and not hit a ceiling it’s better to learn the rules before you break them. You’ll probably learn things you never knew you never knew! Find things about your style you never dreamed you could have drawn before and expand into your OWN person and your OWN artist, instead of being the vivziepop drawalike.

DECONSTRUCTING VIVZIEPOP ARTISTIC ISSUES WE MAY HAVE CONSUMED AS CHILDREN (if her art has improved I haven’t seen but I will give her the benefit of the doubt! So let’s just isolate this to the past for US ex hazbin artists to understand where our problems truly began)

Anatomy: Vivziepop has a habit of not properly following even the anatomy of her own drawings let alone anatomy rules at all. I had to bend and meld what I thought a limb may look like from its transition from in front to behind a limb (like the legs) since the lines didn’t properly match up. Arms change size, legs have no knees, one thigh thicker than the other and hands that have fingers which melt into the palms.

you could say it’s stylistic, but considering she’s ONLY ever drawing stylistically whether she liked to or not this bad anatomy has become a crutch and down fall. If she wished to draw more realistically I will assume she can’t or can’t anymore…

Here’s a draw over. You can keep the stylistic effects while keeping your anatomy at least somewhat readable, especially the hands 💀

Shading: shading plays a huge role in not only give us context to the image like where the light source is coming from but also the shapes of the body. the body is comprised of different shapes (cylinders for arms and legs, circles and ovals for head, different planes for the face) with shading like vivziepop’s we don’t know where the light is coming from but also the shading blends into the drawing as visual noise, or worse makes things look flat and lifeless. Her legs especially are shaded as if they are two pieces of paper sticking out from under her dress.

Colours: we all know her main appeal in art is her colours, but designing your piece by just how pretty you can make all the colours also is ignoring fundamentals in what makes your art from good to BEST. With too much of one shade your whole piece blends together in the eyes of the viewer. With not enough contrast in the right areas you will have a focal point that bounces around (like us her chest the focal point? It’s the darkest spot on the piece! Or is it all those eyes that clutter up the whole drawing with the random stripes in the back…. Ouch! I can’t tell what’s what!)

conclusion: I leave you and others with this quest, you wanna get better at art? Take a moment to critique even your own favourite artists. You can have inspiration of course but question their decisions before blindly hoping on the hype train. Or you could be consuming their own mistakes and end up STUCK, like I was, like many have become.

Give critiquing these pieces a try, deconstruct them, trace them (don’t post) see where the lines match up- do the limbs look as if they existed behind the limb or do they go to a void and come up the other side a completely different size? You tell me…

Revives the diversity…

just a small crappy edit- having these all altered made me realize just how amazing it would be to have diversity in literally anything. Not just race but age, weight, noses, skin tone (for white ppl too), anything—

The inconsistencies continue…

green-best to red-worst…. It’s almost criminal to not have proper references for what these characters huge ass lashes look like in certain expressions. Letting the animators guess for you cause you couldn’t be arsed to create a consistent reference of any character. Hurts more when you remember this is also animated by underpaid bento box employees and exploited college students.

Now for one of the most inconsistently drawn besides Charlie herself:

Her cheek is there then not, her lips have a cupids bow then not, her eyes are super wide then smaller, her lashes are super long then short or not there. Not seen here but her cheek blush is just as crazy inconsistent as Charlie’s. Once again. Is there no draw overs? Someone there to fix storyboards that might confuse the animators or are they given full reign cold turkey? No instructions? I admit I’d go insane.

This isn’t the first time a design proportions change every two seconds in a vivziepop’s work. Beelzebub is another contender, being changed with each animator as they struggle and get nowhere near the original proportions set for them by vivziepop's design. And that is no offence to them at all, I’m sure what they’ve been given is nowhere near as thorough as Lackadaisy’s sheets.

before anyone tells me I’m a hypocrite because I have a Steven universe icon. I’ve been preaching the same thing before you were born lol. Inconsistencies take the viewer out of the story! It MATTERS. Visually and narratively. I’ll give Hazbin a bit of a break since they probably had the same issue like Steven universe where it was overseas and as to not rock the boat said overseas animators relied heavily on the proportions in storyboards… but helluva boss really has no excuse whatsoever.

As someone with pretty bad clinical depression, it makes me legitimately sick how they gave Stolas depression so you feel bad for the poor lil birdie despite the fact that he shows NONE of the symptoms of depression. The writers literally just pulled it out of their ass so you feel bad for Stolas. It makes me feel even sicker that he's infantilized. I hate seeing depressed characters infantilized and acting like they are poor precious babies when depressed people are literally just people like everyone else with their own flaws.

I will admit to give credit where credit is due, Viv somehow made me not like her show with one season.

That episode was literally trying to justify cheating. Aparently "its ok to cheat if your cheating on your wife with a man!"

Like do I have to remind IN THE FIRST EPISODE OF THE SERIES BLITZØ WAD FINE KILLING A FAMILY WHERE THE MAN CHEATED WITH A WOMAN?

I am tired I dont know HOWWW people can think that this is ok. If ANYONE gets cheated on they CAN BE ANGRY! IT IS NOT FUCKING JUSTIFIABLE AT ALL.

And just like I predicted, they are gonna use Millie being pregnant as a way to grow her character.

Honestly its the double standards and the justifying cheating that makes me hate this.

The laziness with fem presenting styles is just as annoying as the masc one…

They all have the same fashion sense… if you think about it most of these outfits could be swapped with maybe a few colour tweaks and you wouldn’t see much of a fashion difference. As if it never even was a consideration in developing their personalities.

Practically the same … and she is considered royalty or at least someone at pop stardom?

Guess who’s who hellaverse edition! This isn’t altered like some… this is straight traced without the hair horns and tails as to make it clear what the huge problem with these designs are.

they aren’t unique. They are dressed up to look unique but at their base level they are exactly the same design just decorated with a billion bips and bops to give the appearance of diversity. When you get rid of all the visual noise you are left with the same person…

personally I was quite offended by this because it’s used merely to trick and bully critics. First you can’t use someone who isn’t even in the main cast- second you can’t physically alter those characters body shapes to prove a point. That immediately muddles the evidence to your own benefit. (Vaggie’s body does not look like that and they used like the only 3 unique designs- shoving in adam to balance out the white and purposefully deliberately changing their colours)
