Performance blog (for my uni work)

I am writing  and will also be one of two actors performing in a play for a performing arts university module. For this I and my classmate had to choose a style/ practitioner and write, produce and perform. Although I am working with a classmate who will perform alongside me I will be the author of the play as I have previous experience of writing scripts. We will be doing small workshops and as we will be including some singing and dancing we will be adding some personal rehearsal time. We plan on showing how hidden disabilities can affect the lives of those who live with them. These issues are something that are often even now seen as background issues that don’t really affect the peoples lives. We have chosen this topic due to our own and families experiences as well as friends.We have decided to include some singing and dancing to help portray deeper emotion and also use skills and strengths that each of us have personally. We hope that this will help to not only allow the audience to be entertained while engaging in the story line but also to add an extra layer of interest to certain characters and their personal stories.   

The practitioner we have chosen is Bertolt Brecht. We have chosen Brecht as he liked to use his work to raise issues he felt the audience needed to think about without being overly emotional or having the issues thrown at them in a way that would cloud judgement or force a definite point of view. He also liked to use simple staging and minimal props which meant that the subject matter could be focused without too much distraction. Brecht's use of multi-rolling also allowed the two of us to work with more characters than you would normally be able to work with when only two actors will be on stage. I personally have performed in plays using this style and admire and enjoy this style of performance both as an actor and as an audience member. I enjoy the simplicity and the focus on the subject matter without flashy overdone sets and costumes taking the focus away from the play itself. I really love the way he makes people think about things logically, whilst at the same time, whether intentional or not, makes them think on an emotional level about how the issue affects people. Brecht has featured heavily throughout my own education and has been a large influence on how I have decided to write this script although with a few differences I have felt are necessary for the subject matter to be show such as allowing us to use personal experiences to help develop some characters and adding singing and dancing to the play as a way to further show some characters and their stories. 

Brecht Was born in Augsburg. Germany on February 10th 1898. When he was young he lived in Bavaria and then went to study medicine in Munich, 1917 - 1921, whilst he also served in an army hospital. Brecht’s style, known as epic theater, was meant to encourage people to think about issues, most of which were political.  He did this in a way that didn’t make anyone uncomfortable, but still allowed the audience to think clearly about the issues discussed in the performance.  He would often set his plays in a simple way, there would be a very minimalistic set, so perhaps a few chairs and a table or some blocks, the same could be said for props. Brecht would use alienation, meaning he would take something as simple as, for example, a water bottle and then it could be many things such as a flashlight or a phone. The lighting was also simple, often manly using a white wash or small change of lighting. Music was used to help with the ambiance of the play but wasn’t used very often. Brecht would have a lot of 4th wall breaks, meaning they would speak directly to the audience. This technique was often used when there was a monologue or someone occasionally saying something off to the side. The style of acting was not naturalistic, unlike that of Stanislavsky or Boal, who when using this technique would normally have the actor  look to their own experiences to help create the emotion behind the character, but with Brecht this was not the case. Brecht’s performers' style of acting for these breaks was a little over the top but not too overly dramatic, as that was how he wanted them to act. In general however Brecht preferred his actors to hold back on portraying certain emotions while performing to let the audience distance themselves. Brecht wanted people to think more about the situation and discuss it from a more logical and intellectual point of view rather than an emotional one.

Bercht’s style of theater is still widely used today and he is one of the more well known practitioners.

We have taken a few aspects of Brecht’s style, such as his use of multi-rolling We decided to use Brecht's style as more of a foundation than conforming to his complete style as we do need the audience to emotionally engage with the characters and have more understanding of the emotional and mental damage the characters have suffered. We have also decided to add music and dance to help break up the story line and add an alternative performance to portray some of the emotions and show more background to some characters.

 Multi rolling is a very useful technique as it allows actors to show their skills and take on different characters.I like this idea as it allows the actors to also expand their ability to study different issues and behaviors of people and use those experiences in one performance as this allows the actor to stretch their ‘acting muscles’. The use of multi-rolling in this play helps to show multiple things in a simple yet effective way. We are using simple costume items such as jewellry and some props such as teddies and fidget toys as this was a tool Brecht used so that the audience could tell there was a character change but in a discreet way so as not to distract from the actual subject matter.

For the set we have used Brecht's style as in, we will be using a minimal amount of pieces, for example we will use a few chairs each containing props for each character ,which will also help with the subtle character change. These chairs will in fact be the only set pieces we will use. We have chosen to keep the set minimal as we want the characters to be the main focus. 

We will use some breaking of the fourth wall in the play to bring the audience back to reality and help bring the subject matter to the forefront of the mind before the audience departs. We also hope that it will give them a better understanding of what they have watched while allowing them to have their own opinions on the subjects portrayed.

Brecht believed that audiences needed to leave a theater thinking about the subject matter of the performance but with an impartial point of view so that although they discussed the subject matter they did so without feeling too emotionally involved. The subjects I am writing about are going to be discussed from each character's point of view but in a way that will bring understanding and allow the audience to engage and converse about how people are affected without feeling sorry for the characters. 

On Mondays and Fridays we will be working after our normal class as well as in class for approximately an hour and a half and will be communicating with each other any ideas or issues through video calls.We will be work shopping physicality, dance and singing. We want to portray each character without including some of the more offensive stereotypes that exist and show the full range of effects and challenges that each character faces.

Things we will be considering for some of the workshops.

Physicality:- posture, movement, quirks such as fidgeting, facial expressions

Dance:- routine planning, emotional portrayal, rehearsal, music

Singing:- performance, emotion, physicality

Week one is focused on writing the first draft of the play and week two will be about refining and focusing the script. The following weeks will each be focused on a character or a dance/ song piece.I will be performing the songs whereas the other actor will be performing the dance pieces. We will focus on each character and discuss and have input on how each character is portrayed. We will be talking to people who have some of the hidden disabilities both while writing and rehearsing. We have chosen to talk to people with personal experience of hidden disabilities so that we can portray the characters as realistically and respectfully as possible. It was something we both felt needed to be done rather than using scientific or even psychological studies as the play is centered on each character's individual and personal experience rather than a professional point of view. This we feel will be better for showing each issue as often professionals have preconceived, textbook ideas of each disability and this can mean they often only see the disabilities and not the experience of the person living with them . We will use our rehearsals to discuss why we are portraying each character in the manner we choose and giving feedback to each other to improve both our performances.

We will be doing vocal exercises with specific exercises for singing. Exercises for physicality and Dance warm ups

Stretching such as yoga, shaking out the body and some simple movement exercises

These will all be used at the beginning of each rehearsal but for singing and dancing each of us will use the exercises that are relevant in between rehearsals as well as at specific rehearsals. The reason for using these during each rehearsal is to allow our tools, that is, our bodies and voices to warm up and to help us get in the correct head space for each rehearsal. Some of these exercises will be added to as we discover what works for this play and for us personally to improve our performance. It will also allow us to make sure that we are able to not injure ourselves either physically or vocally as some songs or dances may require us to push our range. We will be adding music and songs as the play develops and evolves.

We will be using some recordings for voice over to announce some details in the play. This is being used to help set the scene for the audience and give an explanation as to the setting. I will be recording this and editing myself.

As we are writing and developing this performance we have decided to use a generalized plan so that we can add more exercises or remove them as it evolves. This will give us a freedom we could not have had if the cast had been large and will allow us to work on improving both the script and the performance as we go.

Our evidence list may look light as we don’t feel it right to put the stories we have already gathered on a blog. The people we will be talking to are kind enough to allow us to hear their stories and have trusted us to portray a likeness although not their stories exactly unless we felt it would help and they were ok with it being used. We have to respect that for some the stories may be a part of a hard time in their lives but have helped us to understand better what we are showing. We will be talking to more people as needed and making sure that we give the best and most respectful portrayal of the issues.

This is an evolving project which will probably see changes made throughout. We hope to use the style created by Brecht and build a performance that will continue to make people continue to think and discuss instead of just walking away not having learned anything new or interesting.

Hey guys, really sorry this took so long but here he is!

After his defeat Infinite wandered the ruins trying to find a safe place to hide till he was healed, having had the phantom ruby forcefully removed, he had removed his mask and hid in the rubble of what was a house feeling his strength begin to leave and his consciousness slip away from him. Just before he blacked out he saw a pair of amber eyes. When he awoke he was in an unfamiliar room in a bed with soft sheets, he tried to sit up but felt pain shoot though his chest he let out a grunt and placed a hand over where the pain was strongest feeling bandages beneath his fingers. The door to the room opened, Infinite looked up to see the face of his rescuer and was shocked to see the face of the young red wolf who had helped defeat him, at first he thought that the wolf was going to rub in his victory but soon learnt that the young wolf, who infinite now knew as Gadget, was simply trying to help feeling that just because he had done wrong didn't mean he didn't deserve a second chance. To say Infinite was shocked by Gadget's words was an understatement, he wasn't sure if he could trust the wolf but in his current state he didn't really have a choice. After a few months Infinite found that he actually enjoyed Gadget's company, the wolf had been kind and had been there for him, but now he was healed he thought it was best for him to leave so as to not make trouble for his new found friend. When he told the young wolf he began to get the other to stay, not wanting to the other to get hurt, after a good while of arguing, infinite broke down saying he did want Gadget to get hurt because of him, that he didn't want to lose him like his squad. Gadget was taken aback by what the other had said, he took the now crying Jackal into his arms, they stayed like this till Infinite calmed down, the young wolf said that Infinite wouldn't lose him, that he would always be there. Infinite remained quite for a moment then said "Zero, my real name is Zero" he felt a little odd revealing his name to someone he had know for only a few months but he felt safe when he was with Gadget, he felt like he could trust him. Gadget hugged Zero happy that the other trusted him enough to tell him his real name. Zero decided to stay with Gadget and after a few months more they started dating and now Zero, who everyone knows about now but only Gadget know his real name, is getting up the courage to propose

The locket was a gift from Gadget after Zero showed him an old photo of the Jackal Squad, Gadget made a copy of the photo so the original was left intact

Hey guys, here we have the dark God Mephiles, although he's not so dark anymore thanks to a certain albino hedgehog

After what happened with his twin Iblis, Mephiles ended up losing his memories and hiding in abandoned buildings avoiding everyone as the last time he spoke to someone they screamed and called for help then quite a few people began to chase him so he decided to stay away, after a few months of hiding he was found by Silver, he tried to get away as the ivory hedgehog looked ready to fight, they asked what he was doing there he simply said he was hiding from everyone as they were trying to hurt him and he didn't know why, the other thought for a moment and said that he knew who he was and that he'd help him remember, he hesitated but followed the hedgehog back to his home where he was given food and clothes. It took a while but eventually some of Mephiles memories came back, he felt awful when he remembered some things, like a blue hedgehog known as Sonic or his lost twin, as time went on he began to get closer to Silver and realized that this was as more then just a friend. Uncertain how to go about telling him, Mephiles kept his feelings a secret then the most wonderful thing happened to him, Silver confessed that he was in love with him. The dark God felt his heart leap out of his chest, he said he felt the same and Silver looked at him seeming to not believe what he had heard, asking if he meant it, Mephiles smiled and said that it was hard not to love a Star as bright as him, a Star that guided him back to the light in his darkest time, this made Silver blush a red that could rival knuckles' fur. They now live a very happy life with their two kids, Crystal and Flare, and enjoys writing poetry.

Mephiles would normally wear darker colors but Silver bought him a lot of brightly colored shirts and every once in a while he wears one of them to make his Star happy

Hey guys, here he is Silver -chan! Silver has a very eclectic sense of style and due to his smaller size mainly fits clothes from the woman's section, not that he really cares as he actually prefers woman clothes to men's (he actually has a few dresses hidden in his closet :3)

After a long time of trying to save the future Silver decided to stay in the past and live a peaceful life, a year later Silver found Mephiles hiding in an abandoned building, he reached himself to fight but soon as the dark God saw him he hid uncertain as to who Silver was. Seeing how the ebony hedgehog had lost his memory Silver took him in and said that he'd help Mephiles regain his memories. Over time the dark one remembered some things, he remembered Sonic but not fully and he knew Iblis, but not much was there, it's a slow process and during this time the ivory hedgehog began to feel his heart flutter Everytime the dark God was near, having never felt like this Silver called one of his best friends, Manic, as Blaze was out on a date with Amy that day. Manic said that Silver was in love with Mephiles, the ivory hedgehog was a little shocked but when he thought about it it made sense. He asked what he should do and the lime green hedgehog on the other end of the phone said he should tell Mephiles how he feels about him and tell him he did. Chaos was he nervous when he did but thankfully the dark God returned his feelings. They have now been married for five years and have two children, although one isn't Mephiles' but that's a story for a different day (should also mention that Silver is a hermaphrodite as well)

Silver looks up to Shadow and see's him as a father figure, he also gets irritated when Blaze starts to mother him XD
