visiting the penthouse on her days off never came without a shock. usually it would be a different one of her siblings, but áine was perplexed to find it be the youngest. "you don't have to worry about me, luxxie," she replied as she threw her bag and coat down on the nearest table. a huff quickly fell out of her lips as she slumped onto the couch, closing her eyes briefly. "how long have you been here?" she asked, one eye opening and peering towards her baby sister. "and is there any of that left?"

" i'm out of hot cocoa , don't judge me. " comes lux's voice when she hears another entering the family penthouse. the youngest princess had already moved out and into another lavish apartment a few floors down , but that didn't mean she never popped around. hot cocoa was one of her guilty pleasures , and thus she was here to steal some since their father always kept it stocked.

"the question is, my dear, did yours come from the alcohol or simply from life." veda wasn't sure what was true for her — sure, the amount of alcohol did not help, but the impending doom (her words) she felt over this betrothal also scrambled her brain. she was grateful for the few days off after the party — and the mess that came with it — but now it was back to reality. the coffee helped.

" my head hurt the entire day , by the way. " she didn't take anything for it either , just stayed in her apartment like her father had ordered. lux had very much used the day to recover , process , and toss the stray glance towards solaris plaza from her towering window. now that it had been a few days , she'd texted veda to meet up in the daylight.

"wormwood?" it was as good a guess as any from someone who spent their living attending plants — not so much as making things from the things he watched grow from just a seed. either way, malakai found themself at the apothecary not looking for anything in specific, but the enjoy the surroundings that the place offered. "depends on what exactly you're trying to make. hopefully nothing you'll have to wipe my memory or something over, huh." the last sentence was muttered under their breath with a small chuckled, not so much a real one but a nervous one.
location: whisperwind apothecary, just before noon open to all
the nights that followed new years had been restless for hypatia. she hardly slept more than a few hours at a time as it was, but they had become even less peaceful than usual. even now, she could feel her eyes wanting to close and her mind beginning to drift into a haze. after the fifth night in a row, she needed help.
she wandered around the shelves, looking for the ingredients she wanted. there was a potion she knew that granted a dreamless sleep and it wasn't too difficult to make herself. "valerian root, lavender..." she muttered through what she had already, but there was something else missing. "dittany? no, that wasn't it," she huffs, frustrated with herself, "damn it, what am i looking for?"

"it wasn't the sailors." draqys said as a matter of fact, wings tucked in tight as he eyes the same guys elzaren was referring to. the bunch on that boat looked human, but it was hard to tell from this far away. even then, what would sailors want with a malakim — let alone so much to remove their wings? "what would be the motive?" did there even have to be? draqys was truly there to get out of the malakim district where there was nothing but talks of new years, but it appeared that everyone was talking about the horrors no matter where he went.
The seagulls flew around him, singing their strange tune while Elzaren hummed a melody of his own. Like most days, he was at the harbor, sitting on the edge, his feet dangling inches from the water's surface. It was strange how everything seemed to be the same as the day before, yet everything had changed after the gala. The Siren's eyes darted between the people around him. A couple were holding hands as they walked down the street, whispering to each other. Were they trying to figure out who killed her? What about the old man sitting on the bench behind him? Was he the killer? With a shake of his head, Elzaren let out a shaky breath as he ran his fingers through his hair, which was still wet. He hadn't entirely dried after returning to land, and his feet hadn't quite grown steady enough to return to the land dwellers either. While he had intended to stay on land throughout the night and watch the whole scene unfold before him, he had gotten tired of it rather quickly, and the last thing he wanted was to be interrogated by the police, so he had spent the night in the safety of the ocean.
"I bet you that the sailors did it." He told the person approaching him without taking his eyes off his latest targets of suspicion: the two men working on a small fishing boat close to the harbor. "You might be wondering how they could do something like… that, but let me tell you, I wouldn't put it past them! They are very talented; I'm sure they would figure out how to do it."

early morning rehearsals were never in veda's favor, but that is why she always made time to reward herself with a pain au chocolat and the gossips section of the celestria news. it wasn't much, but it sure helped keep her on her two feet when her day started before the sun rose. her eyes peeked over the paper in front of her to see who was catching her attention, instantly recognizing the man she bought a glass of champagne for on new years. honestly, she was glad to remember that much. "lord moltenvein," she said by way of greeting, dropping her news to the table before her. "sometimes you have to enjoy time well spent with the best company there is." her response is added to a flick of her hair, trying to emphasize that she is her own best company. "and just the same old — sleep, work, play. do tell me, have you spent more time with your four-legged friends since we last saw each other?" not to change the subject, but veda's memory was honestly too hazy of the night and, at this point, she didn't want to know about the horrors.

Smiling politely, Cael waved at his clients as they departed the restaurant. Bringing them to Aurora Bistro had been a great plan. The meeting had gone well—but he was relieved it was over. He was tired after a long day at work and wanted nothing more than to relax. Eager to get home, he signaled for the check, peering around the busy dining room as he waited. His gaze landed on a familiar face. Veda. After paying the tab, he grabbed his coat and made his way over.
"Having lunch alone? I hope things have been good on your end considering what happened the other day..." he said by way of greeting. The death had caused a stir in the city. It was all anyone could talk about these days.

it was unfortunate timing for sirena — she was simply a lover of the summer. the warmer months always brought back her most favorite memories growing up and especially with her sister. so, sirena hurried into the coffee house with an umbrella in one hand and her coat bundled around her tightly before she took a seat next to jingfei. " snow would definitely be prettier to look at, " she agreed — though she wished neither was an option. " rain also means ice. " and please don't let sirena halloran slip on the streets.

eyes staring out the window, she watched as the clouds rolled in. a cloudy day of course. it was that time of the year where it was cloudy more often than not. "pretty sure it's going to snow soon." she noted. picking up her cup of hot chocolate, she took a long sip of it before placing it back down on the table. "either snow or rain. though part if me hopes that it's snow."

kai was still bitter. not only does the human in a city full of species not get to celebrate the new year the way they want to — as if they're not the one with limited years — but they have to work an event for everyone else to celebrate at. being behind the bar didn't hurt, per se, but he could still complain. and after a very sober evening to end in horrors kai has never seen before, it shouldn't come as a surprise that they decided the luminous lounge was the first place to be in the new year. a drink sits in front of them yet they can't help but focus on the complaints from the person, or whatever species they may be, next to them. talking to themselves out loud in front of a bar just begs for attention. " so it's the new year and you already hate yourself? " kai questions, with quirk of his brow.
open ! where: luminous lounge
for the past half decade or so, dante had given up on new year's resolutions. it was, in his opinion, the shittiest of holidays. the kind of holiday to remind yourself of all the shit that you didn't accomplish that you swear that you would, and then came the bittersweetness of a new year passing. it was never what it was cracked up to be, and considering what happened this new years eve dante figured throwing the whole day away. sometimes, in his most vulnerable of moments he thought about his younger brother and the kind of person that he never got to be. he let that thought quickly pass as he grabbed the 'hair of a dog' which made his nose crunch at anything dog related. he closed his nostrils and took the drink back and feeling the low burn in the back of his throat. not much had changed for dante. he started the new years morning the same way that he had for the past half decade. "hair of a dog is right," he hisses, "it's not pleasant."

it was silly of áine to assume she'd be alone in a territory that wasn't her own, but there was something special about the place. with a quick turn to find the voice, she recognized evangeline — eva — in a heartbeat — she then supposed it made sense that she must as women with titles. " oh, you're too kind, " she replied with a slight blush, fixing the strap of her purse on her shoulder. " my late husband, actually. it's how i knew he was the one. well, and a few other things, " she added with a small laugh. " gotta have high standards as women, don't we. "

" just passing by, " he nodded to the malakim princess. he didn't know if he'd ever been in this temple, or when the last time he stepped foot in one. had to have been sometime back home. even as he eyed the temple quickly, turning back to face nyxara, he was glad to have run into her. " i think only the most evil of dieties is the one i'd want a word with anyway. " he had felt more than furious after seeing the mutilation done to the body. the most disrespectful thing that could be done to a malakim in draq's eyes. " i hope whichever you prayed to listens. "

Standing before the towering stone pillars of Luminara's temple—Nyxara's wings folded neatly behind her back. She had come seeking solace after the disturbing murder at the New Year's party. Now everything seemed to put her on edge. Every shadow made her startlingly aware of the lurking danger around her. She murmured a prayer to the goddess, hoping for protection. As she turned to leave, she spotted Draqys. "Are you heading inside or just passing by?" she asked him, keeping a smile on her face despite the unease churning within. In truth, she was relieved to see a friendly face.

archie renaux, 27, demi-man, he/they — did you see malakai arya walking down main street ? the tabloids say that the human is known to be hard-working and blunt, but who knows if that’s true. the house of aravali staff member seems to fit the vibe of weeping angels in a foggy courtyard, the feel of soil on calloused hands, and a troubled soul with a lot to prove .
name — malakai arya nickname(s) — kai name meaning — malaki: my angel & arya: noble, illustrious age — twenty seven date of birth — june 27th sexual orientation — homosexual religion — not a fan of the dieties occupation — staff for the house of aravali, groundskeeper family — mother and father, not living in celestria species — human
malakai arya, only truly known as kai, is a human amidst supernatural beings — simple as that. born into a world of magic and mystery, kai finds themself distanced from their parents who reside far from the city. however, moving to the city was one way kai could prove to themselves and others that you don’t have to be seen as a weakling in a sea of mystics.
kai makes ends meet as a groundskeeper for the prestigious house of aravali. despite the magical ambiance surrounding him, kai's work is grounded in the tasks of maintaining the estate's grounds. it’s one thing that kai kept from home: his love for watching things grow and thrive and having a part in that. there is nothing better than the feeling of soil on your hands.
kai's personality is defined by their resilience. they are a hard-worker through and through, tackling any task before them with unwavering commitment. however, hard-headed and blunt, kai is not one to shy away from expressing his opinions. he is quick to stick up for himself, a trait driven by an internal desire to prove his worth in a world where he feels like an outsider.
financial constraints, however, are the real cause of most of kai’s guilt. navigating the extravagant world of celestria, where wealth and power is the norm, presents its challenges. the struggle to make ends meet fuels kai's determination and adds to the chip on their shoulder, motivating them to overcome obstacles in their way.
kai does carry a burning desire to prove themselves in a city where supernatural beings hold the most power. his insistence on standing up for himself stems from a need to assert his worth and carve out a place in celestria. each day is a battle, not just against the mundane challenges but against the perception that as a mere human, he is somehow less. sometimes this results in making very wrong decisions, ones that end with them having a black eye or a few bruised ribs.

riley keough, 324, cis woman, she/her — did you see princess áine firebloom walking down main street ? the tabloids say that the fire fae is known to be glamorous and charismatic, but who knows if that’s true. the princess / pr specialist seems to fit the vibe of a young girl stuck in the body of the eldest daughter, a mothers loving touch to a tearful cheek, and a wilted bouquet caught in a fire .
name — áine (anya) firebloom nickname(s) — ánie (ah-knee) name meaning — áine: radiance age — three hundred and twenty four date of birth — december 1st sexual orientation — bisexual religion — prays mostly to luminara, vitalis, & pyra occupation — sure she's a princess, eldest daughter, and mother, but most importantly a pr specialist (for safiya moonsong and her family) family — firebloom family, lux firebloom, twin sons, deceased husband species — fire fae
**death and loss of a spouse mentioned**
as the eldest sister in a large and illustrious family, áine carries the weight of both tradition and responsibility on her shoulders. the recent events of her husband's untimely demise added to the complexity of her life, altering her role not only as a princess but also as a mother to two twin boys.
áine can be seen as the pillar of strength in her family, shouldering the responsibilities of the eldest sister. with twin sons who have reached their twenties, and her recent widowhood, she has felt an impact on both her personal and royal life. despite the challenges, áine remains a protective and nurturing figure for her sons and the rest of her family.
beyond her role as a princess, áine also serves as a pr specialist, a career she took on when she and her husband had made plans for how their life in title was to be. she works with (or for) safiya moonsong and occasionally her shifter family.
áine's eloquence and ability to navigate the delicate political landscape of two royal families make her a force in both the fae and shifter realms, hoping this may lead to the creation of more alliances down the line.
áine exudes glamour and sophistication, making her a captivating figure in celestria's social circles. well-spoken and impactful, she commands attention effortlessly. despite her regal exterior, áine is not one to be underestimated; she is a force to be reckoned with, wielding both grace and authority in equal measure.

it was an instant she had to take by the horns — or however the saying went when sirena actually knew real people who had horns. her parents were in meetings for the remainder of the eve and so sirena took the advantage of being able to sneak away for a bit to gather herself after the events that unfolded the last time she was on two feet. " hello, your highness, " sirena replies with a small bow of her head the moment she realized who greeted her in the coffee shop. her bow was out of respect, but also admiration for the other. " things have been tense at home, but i'm sure that can be common. " unless the halloran's were taking the new years events even more seriously after the loss of her twin sister, silena, a few years back. " do you mind if i sit with you for a bit? "
the roost coffee shop, mid-afternoon / open
it's a regular weekday — or as regular a weekday as there can be after a murder occurred at the new year's gala last week. artemis has been in constant diplomatic meetings with the other high nobility of celestria, and just as many meetings with their councillors. none of which came close to solving the panic-mongering that has arisen, of course, but what is leadership if not sticking out against pointless bureaucracy in the vain hope it might fix things ?
the bell above the door rings out, and artemis looks up from where they're tucked into a nook with a double espresso and a slice of cake. “ fancy seeing you here, ” they say, a faint grin curling the corners of their mouth. “ how have you been, with everything going on lately ? ”

new years eve was a blur. and for sirena, that didn't mean in any kind of fun way. as soon as a crash was heard, she was whisked away by her family's guards and taken under cover until her toes found water and she was greeted with her tail. thankfully, zarielle is a trusted friend of the halloran's which allowed sirena to take a break from the stress of home. " this isn't the first one i've heard of... " she trailed off, remembering the times she eavesdropped in on conversations between her family and other nobility. " though i have no details. " it was confusing that such events were occurring, but maybe that was just sirena's naiveté coming into play. " i think we're safest here. unless whoever doing this is a siren, but there's no way. " she was sure of it.

Zarielle invited her friend Sirena over to her apartment—hoping for some company to take her mind off the disturbing events at the New Year's party. As they settled in, she couldn't stop her thoughts from drifting back to the murdered Malakim.
"Do you think what happened that day was a one off? Maybe it's best to stay away from Celestria for a while," she said, unable to mask the fear in her voice. A shiver ran down her body, remembering the chilling scene. A sense of unease had settled over her in the days since. She knew evil was out there, but an outright murder at a public celebration was unprecedented.

" oh, don't worry about it, " sirena replied genuinely, offering the other a smile that expressed her understanding. " i also don't enjoy large crowds, but i suppose i've gotten used to them. i try to find a good spot in the corner and watch other's converse. " was it embarrassing for her to admit that? she wasn't sure, though it did make her feel a bit better being able to admit it to someone. people might assume those with some level of nobility should love events like this, but the siren found it to be the opposite. it appeared to be the same for the malakim princess, too. " i unfortunately haven't found a great spot away from others, though i have seen a few sneak off in that direction, " her finger pointed to some kind of exit looking area on the opposite end of the event space.
Her cheeks flush with embarrassment as she realized she had mistaken the woman for her friend. Quickly looking around, Nyxara caught no sight of who she had arrived with. Trying to shake off her embarrassment, she turned back to the stranger and offered an apologetic smile. "I'm so sorry about that, these parties tend to make my head spin. I hope you're having a better time than I am?" she asked—her cheeks still red as she tried to gloss over her blunder. “It’s not that I’m not enjoying myself. Guess the crowds just makes me antsy.” She quickly amended, sounding like a blubbering idiot now, she was sure.

his response forces her to press her lips together, something she hides by pretending she meant to rub her lips to help distribute the remaining gloss. maybe she'd be able to make an excuse to leave by needing to freshen up. there's just something about the prince that makes her skin crawl in ways she was not used to with other men. " hmm, " she hums, cocking her head to the side. " remind me to pack my most conservative pajamas. " or, remind her to even purchase such a thing. liora, a lifetime of living and this was how she was forcing herself to imagine her first marriage ( bold of her to assume there'd be more ). as bash leaned in, veda couldn't help herself but feel the warmth radiating off of his body and the smell of his cologne. but the air quickly went cold with his words, her body tensing before a manicured hand is placed on his chest, pushing him off of her. with a little distance, her cold eyes met his and flashed a bit, but not enough to let others see. " don't remind me. " the words are clipped as they leave her lips, but the champagne flute soon replaces them. the shifter's body turns back to the bar, all logical thoughts leaving her head in an instant. " whatever's strongest. on the rocks. " was her only request.
his grin widens at her greeting. veda's irritation was always so delicious to drink up , and bash would do everything he could to encourage it. this game between them was dangerous , and that only encouraged the prince to keep pushing. rather than commiserate with the deer in his arm , he chose to instigate the situation further. after all , they'd be wed without any choice in the matter with both of their fathers involved. his grin shifts , a grimace for a moment. " i'm sure they'll have plenty of recommendations. " eternal beings must , he assumed. a chuckle slips his lips as she mentions her own father , and bash's eyes glint dangerously at the path of the conversation. " if you want to go on the vacation your daddy suggests , by all means , princess. " he blinks , and the look is gone , not for anyone else to see. his expression is replaced with his signature grin , cocky , charming , and worth a slap all in one glance. " it's a honeymoon , love , there will be plenty of times for me to see all this gorgeous skin of yours regardless of where we go. " his eyes track her hand , and bash resists the urge to steal the champagne flute in her other hand. instead he leans into her ear to whisper something not meant for anyone else. " it should be your choice , little else will be. " he says lowly. it's not a threat , it's the truth of both their situations.
