He was sure any minute now that his heart would leap from his chest and sprint into the ocean — the navy tide swallowing the shore in front of them, only illuminated by the perfect, full moon in the sky.

Perfect, it was always perfect. There were no half moons, no waxing or waning, no crescents or gibbous where they were. For a split second, memories flashed in his consciousness, he was so sure he could remember a half moon, sometime, somewhere, back when...

"Maybe some music will help calm you down," her voice ran down his spine, warm treacle. Meeting her gaze, Barbie's glassy eyes seemed serious, but so comforting all at once.

"Yeah," he agreed, the first time he's spoken in what's felt like an hour. Barbie knew something was wrong, as Ken always had a way to fill the silence, sometimes to a fault. He continued, "I don't want to listen to the radio. It's always the same songs." He could hear them, repeat them, in his sleep if he wanted.

His lips flexed, pursed, and then frowned. There was something about being with Barbie, no matter how he felt, he knew she was the only person who understood. She had been through this all before anyway ; shown him the catharsis of pain, grief, and consciousness. The first night they had talked, he had resented her for bringing it all to light. Panicking in the mirror, trying to find just one imperfect hair, or a single crack in the sidewalk, he remembered the exhaustion that overtook his whole body from sobbing. He scorned her for making him realize there was no escape.

From the grief came desperation and from that begot his greatest ally. No longer the one who had ripped reality from his grip, but the one who had offered him a new home. Purged from his own perfection by the one who he thought captured its very definition, she offered a comfort and meaning he could never find in any book, any song, any painting, or any play...

Suddenly finding his nose nuzzled in the crook of her neck, he whispered.

"Could you sing something?"

barbie spoilers now that i’m back on this blog!

i saw barbie last night, i really enjoyed it and margot, ryan, america, and michael’s performances really stood out to me! i enjoyed the aesthetics and humor of it, even if at times you could tell it was restrained by nature of still being a Mattel movie. i think it was executed the best it could’ve possibly been and overall i am really satisfied. i agree with k’inich in the sense that i am really glad ken and barbie did not end up together, and we wish we could have fleshed out barbie’s emotions and existentialism in favor of the mattel ‘ordinary barbie’ subplot, which felt kind of hamfisted towards the end while they tried to resolve everyone else’s stories with a neat bow. the humor landed much more than i thought it would, and of course the set design and makeup/wardrobe was flawless! ken singing matchbox twenty was fucking hilarious LMFAO

k’inich @magicheels mentioned this in his barbie post, but we do have our own interpretation filled with a little more magical/surrealism, and we’ll continue to go through that as well as take inspiration from the movie. we’re still barbieken warriors 🫶 (despite knowing greta made the right choice, and barbie & ken ending up together wouldve made it worse, LOL)

Barbie always had a way of explaining things that I understand, he thought. Barbie always had, too, strikingly profound observations. So much so that her wisdom, on several occasions, has had him convinced that she witnessed the very first bright flashes of the universe —and that she will be there for it's quiet and humble end. He sat with her words for a beat, before...

A memory flashed in his head (what for?) as he looked into Barbie's sanguine expression of the first time he had ever gained (to be frank) full consciousness. Taking his hand in hers on a perfectly sunny day, she pushed his palm into the grass and pointed an expertly manicured nail at the sky.

"You ever think about how the plants bloom here, so verdant and lively, but it it never rains?" "Well..."

What does mortality mean in a world like this? Did Ken need to know? Did it matter where they were going?

He felt like Barbie certainly knew. He could always tell when she was in deep thought. His eyes shifting from the sweat on her brow to the goosebumps scattering across her arms, he often worried about her when she dropped the whole Barbie thing.

She's always Barbie, you know? But she could turn on Barbie at will. In fact, she stayed in Barbie so often that the slightest shift in facial expression or tone would alert Ken that her battery was running low. It didn't happen often, but more and more he found her unmasking and today had felt like the other shoe (Heel) had finally dropped. Noting her glances, he tried to comfort her —

"Babs..." he started, almost softer than a whisper. Hooking his pinky around hers, Oh those eyes, I could melt, the words come through his lips effortlessly "...I don't know what I'm getting into, but I don't care, as long as it's with you. Pinky swear."
