At Kili's funeral:
Thranduil: I hate funerals. I never know what to say.
Gandalf: Just say "I'm sorry for your loss" and move on.
Thranduil, to Tauriel: I'm sorry for your loss. Move on.

this is the fabric i bought for the main body of arwen's dress. it's a crushed velvet in a midnight blue/ navy colour which cost £3.50 per metre from a craft/fabric shop. I bought 3 metres of it which i may not need all of, but I'd prefer to have extra instead of too little.

so i've decided to start a new cosplay and i really want to put a lot of care and detail into this one so i'm making arwen's blood red dress next! i love this dress and the embroidery on it is beautiful. i also want to keep record of how much it costs because making movie accurate costumes on a budget is super hard and so i want to show that it's possible if you shop smart and buy fabric over time and as and when you need it. i'm really looking forward to this so let's see how it goes!

a year in cosplay
this year has been pretty busy for me so I can't say I've done as much sewing as I thought I might but nonetheless 2017 has been a fairly decent year for cosplay. In the spring I made legolas' tunic from the lord of the rings which I pretty much made in the two days before a convention (oops) but with help, it turned out to be rather great. In the summer I started to make tauriel’s tunic and bow. I was planning to wear this to a convention in november but considering it was going pretty well I decided to not rush it. Instead I went as legolas (one of my friends went as a proper amazing thranduil too so that was cool) and the con was fantastic. I also wore thranduil's armour again for a con in december. cosplay stuff I want to do in 2018: - finish tauriel's costume - dark galadriel - fili - loki - hela - sauron - arwen (i'll probably only do like 2 or 3 in the end...) have a great festive season and a very happy new year :)

making cosplay armour on a budget I mainly used modroc which is just plaster of paris bandages but it's easy to mould and pretty cheap. I used the same process for the shoulder pieces, breastplate and leg guards(?) so the steps are applied to making any piece. (however plaster is pretty messy so make sure you cover furniture and stuff) 1) wrap yourself in cling film - obviously if you have a tailors dummy then its probably easier to mould the armour on that but if not then moulding the armour on yourself works fine 2) layer strips of modroc over the cling film - dip the modroc strips in water then lay them over the top of the cling film. It doesn't take too long to dry and it one layer doesn't need to be completely dry before you add the next. Once you think it's strong enough, take it off and leave it somewhere to dry. 3) adding in detail with wool and glue - i got the detail and design on the armour by dipping wool into pva glue and laying it on the armour. Again this is quite messy and it does take a bit longer to dry but it's strong and quite effective when it does. 4) (optional) layer of paper mache - to smooth out the surface i cut squares of newspaper, covered them in pva glue and layered them onto the modroc. This isn't vital but i found it was way easier to paint with the paper on top. 5) paint the armour - i just bought silver paint and painted 2 or three layers on it. Thranduil's armour was slightly tarnished around the detailing so i used black paint with a sponge to just slightly darken around the edges. 6) glue elastic on so you can actually wear it - i used a hot glue gun to glue on elastic strips so it would fit around the arms, legs etc. This makes it easy to get on and off and also means its actually wearable. (its also a good idea to glue (pva) down a little paper patch where you're going to apply hot glue as hot glue doesnt stick very well to modroc) and that's it! hope this can help anyone wanting to make cosplay armour on a budget!!

Tauriel's bow process (so far) 1) bend wire into rough shape of the bow 2) cover wire in hot glue to strengthen the structure (be careful using hot glue bc i managed to burn myself a few times) 3) cover structure in modroc (paper mache works quite well too) 4) layer up modroc/paper mache until it resembles tauriel's bow

I made thranduil's armour last year with modroc and paper mache. I highly recommend using modroc if you're looking for a cheaper alternative to thermoplastics!!
