*Midterm assignment*
One of my relatives owns a daycare, to which I recently visited. I was inspired by the colors that I saw, which were playful and very saturated. Hues of blue, yellow, red, and green are some of the colors associated with kids and playrooms. My original intent was to create a composition with a double complimentary color harmony, but in this piece I chose red and green as complimentary and yellow and blue to create contrast.

Vertical and horizontal lines assignment using variations in stroke thickness. It’s not suppose to be anything, but it kinda looks like a computer.

This is my lame attempt at creating a Franz Kline inspired piece. I started off with sketches for the white background and black foreground. After I settled on a composition I liked I started painting the base layers. The piece with the white background was taken from one of my sketches, whereas the piece with the black background was free-handed. I figured since Franz Kline was an expressionist I had to turn my brain off, forget my sketches, and paint from a sense of not knowing where the painting would take me. I struggle understanding the value of abstract art, especially expressionism, but after completing this assignment I realized that the act of “just doing” was the most important compared to recreating a planned sketch.

A) Write a brief statement of what you understand about how FRANZ KLINE - From what I understood Franz Kline was an expressionist who would capture the essence of machinery and architecture through broad, typically black strokes with off-white backgrounds.
B) How does he divide the page. - I have noticed that Franz tends to divide the page in thirds or sometimes in halfs. Usually the white space guides the eye through the composition, but in some cases the dark strokes act as a back drop and white areas as foreground.
C) How is line changing from one stroke to the next. - It appears that Franz mainly uses a steady stroke for thick and dark areas.
D) Is it the same kind of line, thick , bold or thin and light? - Comparing Franz's work, he tends to lean towards broad and bold strokes of black pant.
E) Is space painted first (white), before line (black) or the reverse? - There are some paintings where he paints the background an off-white color then applies broad strokes of black.
