An Incomplete List of Things That Have Made Charlie Smile in the Past:
People dropping trays of glasses at noble gala dinners
That guy slipping at the hotel pool when he was twelve
His sister coming home from boarding school
Digby having a worse grade than him and being visibly dissatisfied with it
Very hard-working people on scholarships struggling with university and eventually dropping out
Sleeping in on the first Saturday after all exams are written and all papers handed in
Nathaniel getting sunburnt
Nathaniel being rejected
His own jokes
Clara sending him vacation pictures
Clara sending him texts with more hearts than words
Clara telling him that she’s as fucked up as him
Rufus being his unpleasant self
People leaving hate comments under his pictures hastag Rich Kids Of Instagram
Eggsy mistaking the pug for a bulldog hashtag Charity Case
Sunny, breezy fall weather
Birthday gifts that are absolutely spot-on even though he never explicitly mentioned liking or wanting the thing in concern
Other people’s pets coming to lie down next to him

also re: my last post? charlie reminding poppy that it’s “not long now” when she’s upset about having to stay in hiding (and being homesick because of it) despite wanting freedom and fame and acknowledgement for her success as a businesswoman is quite telling. as is the fact that he’s physically reaching out to her while doing so.

ways your muse says i love you.
character headcanons. ⤿ acc.
Personally, I think that Charlie’s someone who’s fairly open with his feelings, both negative and positive; if he likes you, you’ll know it, and if he doesn’t, you’ll definitely know it. Truthfully, one might even go as far and say that he’s obvious with how he feels, and either makes little attempt at hiding that or isn’t as good at it as he thinks he is – at least that’s my impression from canon material. We frequently see his facial expression and bodily posture change according to his current emotions: 1. Looking for Eggsy’s reaction to him answering the question about the body bags correctly, 2. the shift in emotion during the conversation in the dorm, 3. a similar shift after Merlin tells them Amelia has died, here from smug to serious, 4. grinning to himself as he overhears the conversation between Eggsy and Roxy re: “bulldog”, 5. this fucking expression right after Merlin called Eggsy and Roxy opening the parachute at last minute “a new record” rather than scolding them for it, 6. the shift in expression after Roxy’s exposed him and his negging tactics. So I imagine that if he loves someone (be it romantically or otherwise), he’ll actually tell them so – which I believe is plausible considering that he directly asks Poppy too if she’s built Poppyland because she was homesick. Like, he’s not very subtle.
Now, when it comes to non-verbal ways of saying i love you, it’s all about dedicating time – I always headcanoned his parents as generally loving but not very present and that’s influenced him and his attitudes a lot. He’s independent (even or especially against the stream), but at the same time craves company, and it’s mirrored in the way he treats others: Spending a lot of time with them is both self-serving and an attempt to “do better” than his parents did, and the same goes for being particularly attentive or trying to understand what makes them tick, which includes getting to know what they like and what makes them happy. So the specific ways in which he shows others that he loves them usually depends on the people themselves, though some general things would be: going on vacation or trips together, inviting them to parties, suggesting to get something to eat or drink (especially when they’re already outside or otherwise doing something together), asking about their plans for the weekend and similar, asking about what they’re thinking and generally about their opinion, buying them little knickknack that reminded him of them or that he thinks they might like, actually talking about more personal/intimate issues than he usually does, especially in regards to himself (he might be extroverted, but he tends to not actually discuss his personal worries, family problems or similar with anyone; he’s very private about that).
Additionally, Charlie’s a quite physical person, so physical affection such as casual touches, running his hand through the other’s hair or just general closeness are frequent too. He’s a bit more reserved when it comes to making out in public, so hugs and kisses tend to stay relatively decent. It’s not really matter of prudery, though, but more one of adhering to certain ideas of civility and manners, which also means that he's not always going to stick to them.

how your muse responds to stress.
character headcanons. ⤿ acc.
Charlie responds to stress fairly well – he tends to keep a clear head and a calm, solution-oriented mindset: When the dorm is flooded for their first test, for instance, he’s only in a state of turmoil for a moment, then quickly tries to overview the situation and reminds everybody else to stay calm as well so they can proceed to finding a solution. In my opinion, that first test is also crucial insofar that from then on, Charlie seems to understand how serious these trials are and that unfortunately, Roxy was wrong when she said that no one’s gonna die during them. Surely, he might invest more energy into trying to bully Eggsy out of the competition than what’s good for him, but when it’s either do or die, he’s not foolish enough to keep that up and potentially get them all killed, himself included. So of course he’s going accept his suggestion during the jump, even if it leaves a bad taste in his mouth not only because he didn’t have the sparking idea, but also because well, it was him of all people. Needless to say that making a jab in that situation might have discredited him in Merlin’s eyes too (see: teamwork) and possibly disqualified him as a team leader, which is clearly what he sees himself as.
When it comes to everyday life, he’s pretty much the same except that there he tends to take measurements against stressful situations before they can even arise: He makes plans and schedules for about anything – exams, studying, appointments, nights out, vacations, you name it – and he’s good at sticking to them, too. He’s got a talent for assessing situations and people in general (himself included, so If he’s out with other people, he takes them and their mannerisms into account as well (e.g. if someone’s prone to loitering away, he’s going to account for more time to get things done). That said, it looks very different post V-Day: He’s struggling to handle stress altogether, mentally and physically, and he often finds himself unable to stick to the plans that he’s made beforehand. He’s simply not as resilient anymore and both his bodily as well as his mental state aren’t as stable and predictable as they used to be; sometimes he’s in pain, sometimes he’s not, sometimes he has a good day, sometimes he doesn’t. And the fact that there’s a good portion of denial about and refusal toward his new limits just makes this situation worse. He eventually gets somewhat better when he’s working with/for Poppy as she at least provides him with a more stable and less isolated environment and a purpose/goal he can work toward, but even then he’s very far from who he used to be – or dealing with the changes and the things he’s gone through in a healthy manner. And he’s never really been the one to ask for help, or accept it just like that.

does your muse snore? sleeptalk? sleepwalk?
character headcanons. ⤿ acc.
None of those, actually. Charlie’s a very quiet sleeper in that regard, though personal worries (as opposed to stress and stressful situations in general) may disturb his sleep and especially his ability to fall asleep – a lot of tossing and turning and lying awake. He’s also prone to nightmares and stress dreams under the above conditions (and particularly so after his sister’s death and V-Day), even if you won’t catch him waking up with a jolt.

iii.
Charlie Hesketh has rarely had a bad day in his life because he’s always looked on the bright side of things — which is just what people like him say who have all the doors open for them always. But in the car shrouded in darkness, waiting for the lights to turn green, his bad mood escapes from him like exhaust fumes in a locked garage; Rufus, on the seat next to him, feels it first. It makes him uncomfortable, then drained. Digby, in the back, only scrutinizes his stern face for a moment until he decides that this doesn’t interest him.
When he pulls up the driveway of the mansion where tonight’s gala dinner is taking place, he does so without a word and stops the engine a little more forcefully than necessary, then his fine leather shoes already scrunch on the pebbles as he heads toward the door in fast, firm strides although there’s nothing to hurry about. He snatches a glass of white wine from the buffet before he even greets anyone.
When a girl in a golden sequin dress that he’s never seen before brushes his elbow trying to reach the hors d’oeuvres, his face suddenly but promptly twists into something irate — even if only for a second. Then his recklessness, not satisfied with only ruining his evening, starts to focus in on her.
“What do you like about yourself?”
