       ‘ knowing uncle ray, i feel like he did leave instructions somewhere. he probably doesn’t trust us. well, he trusts you, but he probably doesn’t trust me. i mean, i break almost everything i touch. ’  that much, was true, she realized. considering how many times she’s broken multiple items of his just by picking it up to examine whatever it was she was looking at. ‘ like… do we just… leave them there ? do we feed them ? how do they work ? ’

        ‘ well you can’t expect me to sit back and do nothing while you’re all out being heroes ! and i’ll mommy you all i want, mommy. try me. ’ isabella went to cross her arms, but stopped in her track when she realized the cast got in the way. she defeatedly dropped her arms to her sides, leaning up against the headboard of her bed. was it stupid to be picking a fight with her mother over something as tiny as this ? oh absolutely. did she care ? not enough to stop. she just wanted to be seen as one of them, and no matter what she did, nothing worked. she had thought that maybe… just maybe, this would work and she could help. but she must have been wrong. ‘ and how long do you think i’ve been training to help you guys ? huh ? what do you think i do behind closed doors when y’all are out kicking ass and taking names ? homework ? ’ she paused. ‘ ok i do my homework but that’s besides the point. i’m seventeen. i’m a teenager. mom wasn’t much older than i was when the whole thing with uncle oliver happened. i should be allowed to fight with you if i want to. i mean now that might be a little hard considering i’m kinda a dumb bitch. ’ the blonde furiously wiped at the tears that had started to fall down her cheeks, trying to get them away before her mother noticed. she didn’t want to appear weak in front of her. ‘ why won’t you let me help ?  ’

          ❝ we expect you to go to school and get good grades and hang out with your friends, ❞ ava says, pointedly. she hates this. it’s hard enough trying to parent a rebellious teenager when both parents are about, but with sara gone ava is on her own, and she’s floundering. she wants nothing more than to give in and give her child what she wants so that she can be happy yet she knows she can’t. this life isn’t an easy one, and she’s seen enough heartache and destruction to know that sending a young kid into that isn’t the way someone should parent. no, she has to remain firm on it, even if her daughter ends up hating her. then again, she should be used to that reaction by this point considering how often that’s the first reaction to her when new people appear in her life. ❝ YOU ARE SEVENTEEN YEARS OLD! ❞ ava suddenly snaps. a second barely passes by before her face is a picture of regret. she never raises her voice, and especially not at isabella. she’s just -- concerned, worried, frustrated. she presses her palms into the table and drops her head as she regains what little composure she has left. ❝ your mother is a completely unique and unrepeatable situation. she could have died, what part of that don’t you get? in fact, she has died. twice. twice, isabella. we’ve lost your mother twice. this isn’t a game, it’s not something you can just decide you want to involve yourself in one day because you’re feeling left out. it doesn’t work like that, baby. you have to realise that every time the legends go out there there’s no promise of them returning and i -- i can’t lose you, okay? ❞ she wants to tell her daughter that it’s selfish of isabella to put her through this, but she doesn’t. she can’t risk alienating her even more. ❝ i prefer my daughter to be alive and breathing, and if that makes me a horrible mother then so be it. i’ll just add it to the list of things that i can’t do, but don’t for one second think that this is a reflection of your abilities or strength. it’s not. it’s about a mother keeping her stubborn ass daughter alive. ❞
