Focusing on the bad vibes today 😜 -- Some cloudy times have been going on here lately ☁️☁️☁️ (and I'm guessing they will stay that way 'til the semester ends), but my morning calligraphy practice has been my guiding sunlight throughout 🌞. Not super consistently, but I'm holding tight to it. ✊ I haven't been posting much here, but I'm trying to keep IG stories updated with some pics of daily practice. (Btw, a big thanks for everyone that's been taking their time to follow along--I see you 😉). -- It's been healing to spare this time every so often to deliberately practice and actually study the subtleties of the scripts I'm already familiar with. Although there's a long road ahead, I can already see the clear improvements in them. Taking the time to understand the underlying principles of each, their very details, and correcting vices of the hand, all have been vital to this shift to the next level. I say 'next level' because it hasn't been so much about the ductus anymore--it has to do with overall consistency, details, sleight of the hand, pen manipulation, rhythm and spacing. All in all, I can only say it's been enlightening to be mindful of it all. 🙏

Trying to find my center again...a little bit every day. Looking inside and re-evaluating my life, goals and habits. Restructuring habits that are healthy and make me feel good. Still a long way to go, but I'm striving for consistency and balance, both in life and calligraphy. ✒️ Composition is far from ideal, but the point of today was writing continuously, aiming for a good texture. My foundational hand still needs a lot of work, and so does the process of getting acquainted with the Mitchell nib, but I'm figuring it out as I go, and quite happy with the progress 😊 #calligraphy #caligrafia #daily

Earlier this week I published on @behance an in-depth case study of this lettering made out of handwritten explorations during Martina Flor's @skillshare class. Here's a sneak peek of the process; you can check the full project and follow along each step via the link on my profile 😉

A little late to say good morning, but mine's been great so far! Taking a good walk, listening to music, and sketching under the sunlight in peace. Couldn't ask for anything else on this sunny sunday! 🌞 Embracing the spirit of #summerofsketching and going out to live and letter ✏ (though despite the sunny days here would be more of a #winterofsketching! haha) (em Lago Do Parque Da Aclimacao)

Now up on my Behance this Letter(ing) I created during @alepaul's "Lettering for the Masses" workshop back in 2014. This lettering is a milestone in my lettering journey, and I honored it this year by finally digitising it. Back then vectoring was a great struggle for me, one that I've been gradually overcoming through practice. Still got a lot to go, but I'm really happy with how this turned out! Check out the full process following the link on my profile ✏ #handlettering #lettering #typography #handmade #vector #behance

Boy, did I miss lettering words for a change! 😜Channelling my inner @markcaneso for this #fatscript Thank You 😉. Just wanted to show my gratitude for everyone who followed through my take on @36daysoftype and encouraged me to go forth either by liking, commenting or sharing. 🙏 I try my best to read and reply to everyone, because I want people to know how I truly appreciate their sparing their time to check out what I've been doing, so thank you for bearing with my daily posts! #handlettering #lettering #typography #handmade #sketch

S is for Sol, Sound, Styrofoam, Silver, and Stamp! (also, Serious fun and I Should be Sleeping but tomorrow I won't have time for this! 😆). This reflection play between the Sol music note and the letter S had always been in the back of my head, and today while sketching it just hit me how I could make it work! Dealing with movable type while working at @oficinatipograficasp and experimenting with woodblock printing has definitely got a HUGE influence on such an outcome. How many times did I forget to reflect the letterform before carving, only to realize the mistake after printing!? 😂 #livingandlearning #36daysoftype #36days_s #36daysoftype03 #lettering #handlettering #typography #handmade #printing #stamp #carimbo

Black, bold and brushy roman capital B for #36daysoftype #36days_b Also a Bit Bad, But we keep on trying 😅 Did I say going "simpler" in the last post? There's nothing simple about this one, but just for today 😜 I decided to make this year's 36 Days of Type all about studying and experimenting with letterforms, focusing not so much on the meaning of styles but mostly on different shapes that I want to explore. #calligraphy #caligrafia #romancapitals #dontmindmypinky #ithelpssteadyingthehand

Like every year, 2015 had it's ups and downs; though to me this one specifically felt more like a sucession of tough to face roller coasters (which I'm very much afraid of, I must admit 😫). Still, I gotta say that the most thrilling ride of the year was diving into type-related experiments and getting more and more involved in the typographic community. This awe-inspiring community of makers, teachers, students and type aficionados has been nothing but incredibly receptive and kind to this begginer here who's just getting started in all of it. I really wanna thank everyone for embracing me into this community and always encouraging me to push forward and keep on learning. To everyone who took even the smallest fraction of their precious time to look at what I've been making and sharing or even those who went so far as to send some words of feedback, my deepest THANK YOU! 🙏 #2015bestnine #lettering #calligraphy #experiments #typefreak #typography

Today I had my first ever experience with linoleum carving, shaping one of my dear letters onto it. It was an amazing experience throughout the entire process, from carving to printing. And this is just the beginning of it all! Great things are coming--stay tuned! 😋 #otsp #lettering #handlettering #handmade #linoleum #carving #workinprogress #wip #typography #type #typefreak

Looking at this collage of all the letters together still astonishes me. It seems crazy that all of this was made in just 36 days, in a row. A daily dedication, for about one hour or two tops. Small personal briefs, thought out and executed from beginning to end. All amidst routine's insane demands. "How?", you might ask. Well, as I'd said in a previous post, this was a personal challenge to create and ship daily, keeping consistency while experimenting and learning. Every day, the joy of diving into a new experience in letterforms got me out of bed (early!), just so I could dedicate a little bit of my time to this passion of mine. That is, I didn't have time (in fact these past weeks have driven me insane!). But I MADE time for it (cheers to @seanwes for the wise sayings). Why? Because practising deliberately a little bit, every single day, is the real key to effectively becoming better. And I'm one who's always seeking self-improvement. You see, this was by no means a waste of time. It might sound like a cliché, but it was an investment nonetheless. An investment in my own knowledge, skills and well-being. It kept me excited, eager to come up with the next thing and create. It kept me sane, above all. It made me start my days in a better mood, because I had already worked on something I loved, experienced something new, and accomplished it thoroughly. Not only that, but what's really great about doing it is the fact that I'll always take these little daily experiments with me, and that means I have more previous experiences to draw from when tackling another project, be it commercial or personal. My neurons were provided with more connections to make, and thus it is already clear to me how this experience as a whole is bound to bring about greater ideas and projects yet to come. #36daysoftype might have (almost!) ended (they just announced a bonus day, yay!), but my daily habit of creating doesn't end here. I will keep on practicing every single day, though I won't be posting with the same frequency. Practice and original works are totally different things when it comes to publishing. But more on that another day; I've already gotten too carried away here ✌

Every job is what we make out of it. I'm lucky to have the opportunity of working in a place where learning is incessant, and the exchange of knowledge constant. Where the environment is wonderful (except for the exaggerated heat, haha), and so are the people. Where commitment and love for the craft come first. Where different kinds of knowledge converge to reinvent the language of a technique that became obsolete. Where handmade is part of the core, and thinking coincides with making. I couldn't feel more lucky and privileged to be working at Oficina Tipográfica São Paulo (@oficinatipograficasp) !

Here's a timelapse of the video under the theme "self-portrait" that I had to make for my audiovisual class at university. We had to record with a fixed camera, 3 minutes, no video nor audio editing. ✒ Go watch the full HD video at normal speed, with the fantastic sound of pure calligraphic action - link in my profile. Or just type http://vimeo.com/lineletters/practicemakesperfect ;) Make sure you read the description if you want to understand why did I choose calligraphy, of all things, to express who I am in this short video. 3 minutes of pure process: thinking, making, making mistakes, reflecting upon them, learning. In loop. Iterating. Again and again. Far from perfection yet always seeking it. 🙏✒💕 (em vimeo.com/lineletters)
