towercursed:
She’s cornered and it brings a nervous smile to her face. This demonstration is supposed to a gesture of goodwill between their kingdoms, so she can’t exactly say no to his offer ; but the bow still remains something she should be wary of. Tentatively, she eyes it minus the arrow and holds it out.
It feels ridiculous, but she slips into the stance he asks. Feet placed apart, shoulders relaxed and facing her target. The bow hovers out in front of her while the other arm remains at her side ; she’s not got an arrow to notch.
It’s not right ; her guitar is sturdy and less likely to break. It has the right feeling against her hip when she shoots and she feels much more in control than when she handles the flimsy bow.
“ How’s this? ”
Her toes curl and uncurl as she struggles to not fidget in the uncomfortable stance. She manages to keep the rest of herself still, out of fear of giving him the wrong impression ; she wants him to know she can do this.
Well, at least now they were getting somewhere. He’s come a long way in his own training, and his ability to train others. He forgets, often, that it’s not as second nature to everyone. From the time Shang could lift his arms he had been drawing his bow, honing his skills with a sword, and much more.
He judges her stance, letting her arm remain at her side without comment for now. She holds her posture decent enough. Her feet are the wrong angle, her breathing isn’t right, and above all else well, the bow is angled upwards rather than straight. He takes a step forward, his hand touches the top of her wrist.
“Relax here.” He suggests, waiting for her to do so. “You should pretend you have an arrow too. Just––uh –– put your fingers on the string. Don’t worry about pulling back yet.” There was too much to fix in just the stance alone, drawing back likely would be a step too far for her.
“And you’re holding your breath.” He says, a smug smile reaching his lips as he pokes her ribs.

“Sir. I’m ––– not sure I understand.” A stop over in a neighbouring town on his way back to the palace had proven worthy. A nice little tea shop where he could take a moment to put something in his stomach. He hadn’t expected his presence to spark attention from the older man at a neighbouring table. But it had so he tries, his best, to engage politely.
“This tea is no different than any other tea I’ve had.” His voice is calm, showing his confusion in the slow and deliberate way he speaks.

headcanon + concussion.
GENERAL. I always found Shang’s actions in the later part of the fight with Shan Yu a bit odd for him. He doesn’t fight like he normally would, he doesn’t chase after Shan Yu when he goes for Mulan like he normally would. Now that I re-watch Mulan I realize that it’s obviously due to some head trauma.
EXAMPLE 1. after having pinned Shan Yu down for a time, he gets an elbow to the face, and a headbutt which knocks him out hard enough for Shan Yu to literally throw his limp body a few feet. That’s a prime example of a concussion, and this is where his behaviour changes immediately when it comes to combat.
EXAMPLE 2. after he wakes up, he immediately draws a knife to defend himself (and Mulan) but does a (lets be honest here) shitty job at it. He’s also struck again by a fist which is holding a the hilt of a sword. That’s absolutely more head trauma. After this, Mulan throws her shoe to gain Shan Yu’s attention, and Shan Yu drops Shang. Shang stays on the ground, and doesn’t get up to pursue Shan Yu as he chases Mulan.
CONCUSSION. a single strong hit to the head where he passes out is trauma enough, but to be struck hard a second time with basically a blunt object? yeah, Shang is hurting really bad. I believe he actually stays on the ground for a long time trying to regain some level of clarity (which likely doesn’t happen).
CONCLUSION. he’s got head trauma and that’s part of the reason he’s not as... comfortable with his words and actions towards the end of the film. He lashes out in anger at the Emperor’s advisor which we haven’t seen before, at least not with physical violence. He also needs to ask the Emperor for clarity when the Emperor tells him to ‘go get your damn girl you idiot’. I truly don’t feel as though he wouldn’t have known what the Emperor was saying had he been clear of mind.
#( dw the awkwardness of 'you fight good' is still 100% just him being a dumbass#but it did certainly affect him )#hc.

headcanon + báiyún & equestrianism.
GENERAL. we need to talk about Shang, his horse, and his relationship with this horse as well.
BÁIYÚN. Shang’s horse is absolutely a stallion based on the shoulder, neck, and flank development of muscle. In the films he is not given a name so I’ve gone ahead and named the horse Báiyún (Mandarin for Whitecloud). In addition, Shang’s horse is likely a heavier breed of horse similar to a Lustiano (pictured above). These horses are IMPECCABLE war horses and are known for their athleticism, trainability, and incredible personality. Báiyún also appears to stand somewhere between 15 and 15.2 hands, which is about average for horses.
EQUESTRIANISM. many times during the film we can see Shang display amazing horsemanship as well as riding ability. Most notably is the attention he gives his horse after a spook/frightening incident. He thinks about nothing else except reassuring his horse. It’s second nature, and suggests a long life of being around horses. In additon, he displays the ability to ride very effectively with one hand. I have been riding for 15 years and cannot ride many horses in a higher speed with one hand. He is highly trained in equestrianism.
RELATIONSHIP. I believe that to develop a bond such as the one Shang and his stallion have, they would have had to have many many years together. Horses can live up to 30 years of age. But their prime in life is around the 10-15 mark. As a result, I believe Shang’s father would have purchased Báiyún as a young colt, and instructed Shang to train, develop, and take ownership of Báiyún as a way to give a young 10 year old Shang the chance to prove himself independently.
CHILDHOOD. Shang would have spent most, if not all, of his life around horses, specifically army horses. I believe this has given him an edge when it comes to his abilities, as you only learn from horses by spending extensive amount of time with them. He likely helped exercise war horses in his youth to sharpen his skills. Because he did not learn from backyard pets, but rather high strung, very athletic war-horses, he has an enhanced level of skill that many other equestrians may not possess.

ooc. i’m struggling to figure out wHAT THE FUCK breed Shang’s horse is. Because historically a Ferghana horse makes sense. Even the drawing style would suggest that. However the Ferghana is actually built similarly to a thoroughbred and bUGS ME.
#ooc.#( thoroughbreds just aren't my thing#lean built horses? NO#im biased i own a clydestale cross so#im giving shang a lustiano. THERE#done )

“Hey–– you go to school here right?” That seemed like a dumb question. First day jitters, he supposes. College back in China was very different, never mind that it had been military college on top of it. Thinking for yourself wasn’t often encouraged.
Normally he wouldn’t ask for directions, but he was so lost he had spent the first half of his lecture on Political Science pacing the campus trying to find this lecture hall! The room number was so bizarre, he stood no chance, he felt. Put him in a combat zone and he could easily navigate through it but this was like a whole other world to him.
“Can you tell me where this class room is?” He holds out his class schedule to her, pointing at the classroom number JYU 823
