“If I am your blood, and will not blink to step on you to accomplish my goal, imagine what others will do to you “. These disturbing words were said to me by someone very closed to my heart. 30 years have passed since those words were spoken, as a reminder, that my good samaritan behavior and naive ways would only take me somehow to a path of self destruction, pain and constant disappointments . And even though, I must admit, life tried more than once to prove those words true, my nature kept me from falling into, what I believed, was repulsive, insensitive and inhuman behavior. I did what I tough my kids, I followed my heart, and always tried to take great care of the impact my actions would have in my life and the lives of those people that I shared my life with. Today I realize I may not have all the material things others may have, but not because I wasn’t capable of accomplishing it, but more because I realized early in life, that these, did not fill my heart nor made me a better human., but the most reveling realization I have had, its that my life is much more richer than those that accused me of being naive. I have so many people that respect, cares and look up to me. Not because I have what they dont, but because I am true to myself and to those that have come into my life. Because i live a peaceful life. Because my kids still till this day think I can do no wrong and trust my opinion. Because I have friends I may not see or talk to frequently, but they know I am only a call away, and I will never judge or criticize their decisions. Because I come home every day to share my bed with man that says he has been looking for a mentor, an example to follow, not realizing it was laying next to him. Because when I lay in my bed to rest my tired body, nothing keeps me awake, because I know with conviction I gave my very best. I used to think that not knowing, was a blissful commodity, and the less I knew, the easier it would be to ride the rollercoaster . But the older I get, I realize that ignorance its not as blissful as it may once have felt. Ignoring what goes around me, as if I wont get wet when the waters floods, its not a luxury I had, if I cared about those I leave behind. I find it difficult to understand how a selfish interest can somehow be more fulfilling than the interest of the whole that I am just part of. Understanding and accepting who we are and accepting that uniqueness is what gives us the power to make a difference. It is the most underestimated and overlooked power we all have within. Sadly we spend half of our lives being conditioned to follow other’s, and the other half imitating who we think we want to be or what we have been conditioned to believe we have to be like . The older I get, the more that I travel, the more people I get to share with, the more I understand how intolerant and sadly ignorant we have become as a society. We somehow, have found a way to believe that our social standards and religious believes make us superior from others. Closing ourselves to the wonderful opportunity to learn, accept and most important, respect the fact that our way of life, may just not be so different from others, and that in fact, we could enrich our minds and our lives in general by understanding and accepting our differences , could perhaps, be the start of a more accepting and peaceful way of life. But instead, we have slowly and sadly become intolerant profoundly judgmental and outright disregarding. We need to understand that in order to drastically change our lives, we need to start by changing our thoughts. We will never come out of the dark hole, if we don’t change first what made us get in there in the first place. We won’t succeed, unless we understand the changes we must make, in order to come out of the dark into the light. Only a wise man will admit his mistakes and will admit their failures. Because they understand its a lesson that must be learned, to prevent finding themselves in the same situation that onces made them fail.
