my (rather belated) impression of this year's Special Mystery Opera - Psychic Detective Yakumo stage play!

I say that but it's just me trying to cram scenes I liked with Yakumo as much as possible into the canvas lol

I feel that the production is the definition of "never let them know your next move" because I didn't know what to expect given the unusual stage layout this time around, but they really went ahead and utilized it to the fullest! And the lively direction that this adaptation took is still so refreshing to see.

Who's your favorite Yakumo? Shinjiro Atae, Ryunosuke Kawai, Nakamura Seijiro, Hidetoshi Kubota, or Gotou Dai? I'm only familiar with Hidetoshi Kubota and Gotou Dai tbh.

I have to say I'm also mostly only familiar with Hidetoshi Kubota and Gotou Dai's versions. If you asked me this question thirteen years ago though, I would've answered Nakamura Seijiro based on visuals alone? 😅 This was before Hidetoshi Kubota's version came out, and I also didn't really have the means to watch Hidetoshi Kubota's versions until many years later.

Right now, I can't decide which I liked more between Hidetoshi Kubota and Gotou Dai's versions. I think that I liked them both for different reasons. They appeal to me differently and rightfully so, as the tone and setting of the versions are entirely different, with Hidetoshi Kubota's being a more serious stage play adaptation set on the main timeline and Gotou Dai's being a musical (though they called it an kageki/opera for some reason?) with various creative liberties taken by the director, and taking place on an earlier timeline when Yakumo was slightly younger. Admittedly, I wasn't too sure about them casting Gotou Dai when it was first announced up until I was right there in the audience seat and heard him started singing on stage 😅 and then it was like, oh, I get it😳

I'm still a little sad that I didn't get a chance to see Hidetoshi Kubota's version live. manifesting casting him for shin yakumo adaptation now that he's older

Also, slightly off topic, but I think that the logo they did for Hidetoshi Kubota's stage play adaptations was the best Shinrei Tantei Yakumo logo they ever did for the entire IP 🔥 I liked it enough that I have it as a tattoo actually

I don't recall it ever being addressed. But if it have been addressed in any of the prequel books that I have yet to read, I wouldn't know.

My personal headcanon though is that it takes up a lot of energy to use that much brainpower 🥱

I'm choosing to answer this ask indirectly since I can't answer anonymous questions privately, and I do not want to unintentionally spoil anything for anyone else.

No, I do not know how the Shinrei Tantei Yakumo volume 12 ends. Not because I can't find out yet, I'm simply not in a hurry to. I try to never read too far ahead of my side project, especially with numbered volumes. Frankly, if I do so I might risk losing my motivation to continue the project entirely, and I'd rather not have that happen.

As such, I'd also appreciate if you'd take spoilered discussions off my blog(s) 🙏
