U.S. Army Veteran Glenn Cote and Family Gets New Home for Christmas
The holiday season is a wonderful time to pay it forward and this year, a Long Island veteran and his family benefitted from this spirit of giving.
U.S. Army Combat Medic Glenn Cote of Miller Place, NY, who served from 1988-1992, his wife and son, were ready for some good will to come their way. Glenn’s wife, Renee suffers from a painful metabolic disorder which requires costly biweekly treatments and caused her to suffer three strokes. Their young son, Zachary, was diagnosed with a brain cancer and subsequently, also Acute Intermittent Porphyria. Then, to compound their hardship, they were evicted from their rental home which was foreclosed. Their story touched the hearts of Glenn’s fellow veterans and the broader community who rallied to their rescue.
Led by the Veterans of the Rocky Point VFW Post 6249 and builder Landmark Properties (Rocky Point, NY), along with other compassionate area businesses Four Seasons Sunrooms and Windows (Holbrook, NY), which donated windows, a new home was built for the Cote family in Miller Place just in time for the holidays. It was especially helpful that Zachary was able to remain in his school district and among his friends. Earlier this year, the family was evicted from their rental property which went into foreclosure. With donations of time, materials, labor and money, Landmark Properties was able to build the home on a fast-track schedule in four months for under $200,000.
Pictured here (left to right) is a representative of the Veterans of the Rocky Point VFW Post 6249 along with Angus Morison, Brad Beard and Brian Fabian of Four Seasons Sunrooms and Windows at the recent ribbon cutting for the Cote family’s new home.

Four Seasons Sunrooms & Windows’ FSU Training Program Shares Best Business Practices with Dealers across North America
Four Seasons Sunroom & Windows (www.fourseasonssunrooms.com), a leading manufacturer of an extensive line of sunrooms, conservatories, pergolas, lattices, carports, patios covers, screen rooms and other home improvement products, has developed a rigorous curriculum to help train their dealers on best practices across key operational areas, from sales and marketing to production and installation. Its educational and training courses are offered through Four Seasons University (FSU) to dealers across the United States and Canada. To date, approximately 200 students have participated in one of the FSU three-day long seminars, the most recent of which was held in Vancouver.
According to Four Seasons Sunrooms & Windows Southern Regional Business Manager Mike Zokle, who was instrumental in developing the FSU curriculum, “FSU was developed as an extension of our dealer on-boarding process. Our goal was to provide dealers with a more thorough understanding of the three key elements of a successful home improvement business model; sales, marketing and production/installation. FSU focuses on training the trainers or business owners so that our dealers are generating leads, producing sales, and installing product quickly and correctly. For dealers who’ve gone through the FSU program, we already are seeing improved results within 45-60 days of their attendance.” He added that FSU was designed for all dealer personnel; owners, managers, sales representatives, marketing staff, production/installation teams and office staff.
While prior to the 2008 recession and housing market crash, many home improvement product manufacturers were offering dealers training programs, Four Seasons currently stands alone in the level and content that FSU offers its dealers. Its marketing curriculum, for example, focuses on today’s pervasive online reviews. Regarding this critical area, Four Seasons is partnering with a review platform provider, Chatmeter. A Chatmeter representative serves as adjunct instructor delivering current information and advice to help dealers better manage their online reviews and reputations. The sales course discusses how to execute the habits of successful sales people, and there are plans to roll-out an advanced sales course for those who attain a certain sales volume and are looking for greater opportunities. FSU’s production/installation course is comprehensive and detailed in conveying best practices for optimum product installations.
Dealer personnel who successfully complete the FSU program, which includes a written test to assure a high quality learning experience, receive a “Certification ID Badge.” It can be worn by dealer staff on customer appointments as a valuable credential attesting to their commitment to high service quality.

Four Seasons Sunrooms & Windows Helping One of Its Own
Four Seasons Sunrooms & Windows (www.fourseasonssunrooms.com, Holbrook, NY), a leading manufacturer of an extensive line of sunrooms, conservatories, pergolas, lattices, carports, patio covers, screen rooms and other home improvement products, is standing by one of its employees, Michael Stoloff, whose family’s Deer Park home was recently completely destroyed in a house fire. The company’s management team has offered to help pay the rent on the Stoloff’s family new home for the next three months while they recover from their losses.
According to Four Seasons Sunrooms & Windows Vice President of Marketing Richard Harris, “Our colleague, Mike Stoloff, and his family were hit very hard by this fire, virtually losing everything. There’s no way to replace some of the family’s cherished belongings or the memories they’ve shared in their home, but we can do something to show them we care. Mike’s a loyal team member at Four Seasons and helping relieve some of the financial burden this family is experiencing is something we can do.”
To raise funds, Four Seasons Sunrooms & Windows has started a Go Fund Me account for the Stoloff family. In addition to contributing to the account, the company’s Management has agreed to 50% of the new home’s rental fee.
The fire on December 5th caused extensive damage to the Stoloff’s two-story home forcing Mike, his wife, Anna, their daughter, and three grandchildren to find a new place to live. Along with Four Seasons Sunrooms & Windows, members of the local community, including the Deer Park Fire Department’s firefighters, are getting behind the Stoloffs to help them through this tragic event with donations of clothing and household items.

Four Seasons Sunroom Group Aims to Build a National Remodeling Organization
Metal manufacturing acquisition is first step in growth of national remodeling group
By Jim Cory
Earlier this month Latium USA—corporate parent of the Four Seasons Sunrooms franchise—announced its acquisition of Metals USA Building Products, a manufacturer and distributor of aluminum products, from $8 billion steel giantReliance Steel & Aluminum Co.
The acquisition adds a third component to Latium USA’s holdings, which—besides Four Seasons, with 300-plus franchisees—also operates Four Seasons Home Products, a retail group consisting of 12 stores offering home renovation services, including sunrooms and kitchen remodeling.
Vertically Integrated Remodeling Giant
Shaun Kennedy, the president of FourSeasons Sunrooms who—with his brother, Brian—is co-owner of Latium USA, says that the acquisition is one more step in achieving their goal of building a $500 million remodeling group that will include manufacturing businesses that can be integrated into the company.
Where that integration may occur is in the patio covers and carports product categories—specialties of Metals USA that are particularly popular in the southern and western markets the company serves. Those products are considered the low-end of the broader sunroom market, retailing for less than $5,000.
Kennedy says that Latium USA will change the name of Metals USA to Metals Building Products. He told REMODELING that he plans to operate the company separately from both the Four Seasons Sunrooms franchise group headed by Pat Marron and Four Seasons Retail, led by Peter Allen.
Positioning for Future Growth
How, exactly, the acquisition might fit into that larger goal of a vertically integrated remodeling group has metals industry veterans such as Bud White, president of White Aluminum, in Florida, and the original owner of Metals USA, scratching their heads, since Metals USA Building Products is a manufacturer of metal products that distributes through other entities such as Town & Country Industries and does not actually install the products it makes. “It seems odd,” Dorman said. “Maybe the price was right.” But then, Four Seasons Sunrooms, founded in 1975, is one of the rare operations in the home improvement industry with experience in not only manufacturing—it produces all the components for its sunrooms in its Long Island plant—but in retail and installation as well.
The recession that set most remodeling companies’ sales back did disproportionate damage to the sunroom industry where Four Seasons is the largest player. Industry sales, reported to be somewhere between $2.5 billion and $3 billion before the fall 2008 stock market and banking crash, declined by as much as two-thirds during the years that followed. According to Craig Addington, executive director of the National Sunroom Association, in Cleveland, the industry has seen new growth during the last 18 months as consumer credit has become more readily available.
Still, sunroom sales are far from what they were before the recession. Many large retail sunroom companies, such as Paradise Sunrooms, in Chicago, or Melani Brothers, in Virginia, have gone out of business. Others have stepped back, emphasizing windows or other products to make up for lost volume due to the shriveling sunroom market. Recently a handful of home improvement companies such as Hulco, in Chattanooga, Tenn., and Majors Home Improvement, in Pensacola, Fla., have been aggressively pursuing sunroom sales, citing a vacuum among sellers of the product.
For the owners of Four Seasons Sunrooms, a central focus has been building the company’s retail arm. Peter Allen, who heads that division, says that the 12 company-owned stores will generate $25 million in sales this year.
Kennedy says that he expects Metals Building Products—currently doing about $50 million in sales—to expand to $100 million as it offers more services and opens additional locations.
That has left many in the industry to wonder how or why investing in additional production capacity makes sense at this point for Four Seasons. The legal firm of D.S. Berenson, a construction attorney who frequently contributes to REMODELING, assisted Latium USA in its acquisition search. Berenson calls the Four Seasons trade name “underutilized” and says, “The time for seeking strategic acquisitions is when everyone is suffering.” In fact, Kennedy adds, there will be other acquisitions going forward, though what he might have in mind next he doesn’t say. —Jim Cory is a writer based in Philadelphia and is a contributing editor to REMODELING.

Latium USA, owned by Brian and Shaun Kennedy, becomes the American arm of Latium UK, owned and founded by Brian Kennedy.
Latium USA/Four Seasons President Shaun Kennedy said, "We have emerged in a strong position following a difficult period for the industry. The changes mark the formation of a major vertically integrated home remodeling group with a sunroom franchise company, a retail multi-product company and a national building products company." He indicated that Latium USA will be seeking further acquisitions.
The divisions will operate independently, with self-reliant marketing, sales and P&L accountability under the overall guidance and supervision of Latium USA.
