day 1 -> sleepy cuddles

My first fic for KRBK Cuddles Week! I combined the prompts common room, movie night, sleepy, and cozy cuddles. Enjoy!

When Eijirou woke up to sweat-soaked sheets and his heart pounding in his throat, he didn’t think he’d be able to go back to sleep that night.

The bright 1:26 AM that blinded him as he checked the time on his phone showed that staying awake would be a terrible idea; doing a full day of school and hero training on only three hours of sleep spelled disaster.

The tried and true method it was, then.

Blanket in tow, Eijirou stepped out into the hallway and walked the short distance to the next room. Loud enough for the occupant to hear but soft enough to not disturb anybody else, he rapped on the door, only having to wait seconds before it swung open to reveal Bakugou’s glare. The heat behind it died when his eyes landed on Eijirou, his face clearing to just a sleepy pout.

Eijirou didn’t say anything, just smiled sheepishly. Bakugou frowned, his eyes taking in Eijirou’s face, the tired squint to his eyes and the dark circles that were no doubt under them, his hair that he hadn’t made an attempt to smooth out before leaving his room, the blanket bundled in his arms.

Eijirou waited as he took it all in, the rapid thrum of his heart rate easing some under Bakugou’s stare, until Bakugou finally disappeared back into his room to grab his own blanket and his phone and joined Eijirou in the hallway.

It was silent as they made their way down to the kitchen. Hot chocolate was made (Eijirou’s mama’s recipe, a sure-fire way to help him feel better and Bakugou had managed to recreate the drink perfectly), a movie was set up on the TV (Eijirou didn’t know what it was, nor did he care; the flickering light of the screen and the shifting images from the near-muted film was all he needed), and they both migrated to the couch, mugs in hand and blankets around shoulders.

Eijirou leaned into where he and Bakugou were pressed shoulder to hip as he sipped from his mug. The creamy liquid soothed his nerves further, the kick of cinnamon a reminder that Eijirou was awake, here with Bakugou, not trapped in the Shie Hassaikai hideout in the dark with lightning fists pounding into his arms, cracking skin and breaking bones- 

Eijirou took a bigger swig, burning his tongue in the process but he didn’t care.

“Not gonna do you any good to choke from drinking too fast,” Bakugou mumbled around the lip of his own cup, all snark but lacking the bite. A lighthouse to shine through the dark, guide him to safety.

Eijirou leaned into that light with a soft laugh. “I can’t help that you made amazing cocoa, dude.”

Bakugou hummed, but Eijirou could see the corner of his lip twitch upward as he took a sip.

His own mug was drained in no time, and Bakugou was setting his mug on the coffee table as Eijirou did even though it was still half full. Eijirou didn’t question it, instead accepting the embrace Bakugou offered once he’d settled against the arm of the couch. There was a lot of shuffling, ribs elbowed and whispered swears and hushed apologies, before Eijirou sighed in contentment as he sank into Bakugou’s hold, his head tucked under his chin and his nose brushing his neck.

It wasn’t often that he was in this position. Usually he was the one holding Bakugou, giving him comfort in the wake of his nightmares that had been rampant, almost nightly, after Kamino. 

They’d figured out this routine not long into their time in the dorms. Their rooms often felt too cramped when the fear still clung to them and lurked in the corners; sitting in the wide open common room in front of the obnoxiously huge TV made it feel like the terror wasn’t pressing into them as much.

Eijirou had already felt it lessening as he sat with his cocoa, but now the fear and the shaking seeped out in waves as Bakugou held him to his chest, one hand idly running through his loose strands but otherwise resting tangled in them. His heart pounded strong, steady in his chest.

“Do you wanna talk about it?” Bakugou asked softly some time after they got settled.

“Mm, not really. It’s just the same stuff.”

Bakugou hummed, the sound rumbling through his chest. Fingers idly scratched at Eijirou’s scalp, and he sank further against his friend.

Bakugou snorted. “You really are a fucking dog.”

“M’not,” Eijirou mumbled.

“Are too. Just a big ol’ puppy.”

Eijirou propped his chin on Bakugou’s chest to pout at him. “You’re supposed to be comforting me, not making fun of me.”

Bakugou rolled his eyes, but still gently guided Eijirou’s head to rest back against him with the hand in his hair. “I am. No big-bads are gonna get ya while I’m poking fun at you.”

A surprised laugh bubbled up out of Eijirou’s mouth, and he buried his smile into Bakugou’s neck. “So mean, dude.”

“I know,” Bakugou said, even as he pulled Eijirou closer and pressed a kiss to the crown of his head. “Sleep. Alarm is already set.”

Sleep sounded nice, the remnants of the nightmare barely a whisper in the back of his mind. Those little wisps didn’t mean anything, not when Bakugou’s arms were wrapped so securely around him, his own heart slowed to match the steady beat pressed against his ear. 

Eijirou yawned, snuggling deeper into Bakugou. “Mkay,” he mumbled. One eye pressed closed against his chest, the other watched the TV screen, too low to hear. He watched the characters act out their hijinks, Bakugou’s heart the only audio track he needed, until sleep claimed him, gently, peacefully.

Just as gently he was being roused by a hand on his shoulder and lips on his forehead, the sun barely tinting the sky. No words needed to be spoken as they switched off the TV and gathered their blankets, their mugs washed and put away. 

Not a trace of their presence was left behind as they shuffled upstairs to catch a few more winks, their ritual a secret between them and the night.
