I interpret it as he has been pressured by societal norms of men need to be strong and do not need emotional comfort from women. And it is a fact. Even rn, men are highly pressured to follow the expectations to be self-reliant and not show emotional weakness.

shen yuan is a kind person, yes, but he's not xie lian (as one either anon or commentor here compared fanon sy to)! he! is! a! cunt! and i adore him that way! being a good, kind person doesnt mean you cant be a little bit cunty. also, he isn't smiling all the time, his external demeanor is usually somewhat composed. which is honestly probably dissociation at certain times, but my point is! he isnt! just randomly smiling all over the place!

and for shen jiu, i dont know how to explain to people that liking a villain doesnt mean you have to find a secret way they arent that bad. the fact of the matter he is a child abuser, he is misogynistic, hes a horrible bastard who keeps digging his own grave and dragging others down with him because he cant stand others not living his life, and i love the character that way. hes completely and utterly fascinating to analyze, and making him a feminist or secretly a good teacher takes away from what makes him a great character.

I love svsss, it’s a great book. I love Sj, he’s a complex character with a great story. I hate how ppl treat Sj. Everyone talks about how poor Sj deserved better, he shouldn’t have been murdered. Lbh is in the wrong for killing him.

Sj 100% deserved his ending. He was a terrible person. Yes, his backstory is really tragic, but that doesn’t excuse his abuse and neglect of his peak and duties.

Sj wasn’t some innocent bystander in Lbh’s abuse. He actively participated and promoted it. He has the choice to not pick Lbh, but he did. He saw a 13 yr old boy and was a jealous 40+ yr old man. No one forced Sj to pick Lbh. That was his choice to take him.

After willingly taking Lbh on as a disciple, he abused him to no end. He motivated everyone to target Lbh. Yes, other peaks also had abuse/neglect going on, but that doesn’t make what Sj did okay, or any better.

He attempted to murder a child on multiple occasions. Lbh has done absolutely nothing to Sj, yet he tried to kill Lbh multiple times. He even gave Lbh the faulty cultivation novel so he would have a qi deviation. He make Lbh fight a demon who was 10x his strength. Everything he did was to abuse Lbh, a child he willingly let onto his peak. To top it off, he pushed Lbh into literal hell(I give hims some slack bc that was the whole demon Lbh reveal).

This neglect didn’t even stop at Lbh, he neglected the rest of his peak. He was a terrible master for his peak. He also treated the people around him like shit. Everyone didn’t hate him for no reason. He was a cold and cruel man to his fellow peak lords. Their dislike didn’t come from thin air.

Then, after everything, when Lbh is enacting his revenge, he admits to not regretting a single Thing he did. Sj even said if he could do it again, or would do worse to Lbh.

Not once is Sj remorseful for what he did to a child who’s only mistake was having potential. Sj did not deserve any better than what he got. A sad backstory is no excuse for his terrible actions.

Yes, Yqy not coming back for Sj was terrible. Yes the abuse Sj went through as a slave was horrible. That does not change the horrendous person he turned into. There was no external force that made Sj pick Lbh, nothing making him abuse Lbh. All of his actions were his own, of his own free will.

TLDR: Sj nah have a tragic backstory, but he still deserved his ending.

i love shen jiu because there’s just something deliciously horrifying about a character who was meant to be redeemed becoming doomed in the story because an author was pressured by readers to go in a different direction. what a cosmic horror for the character! you had the potential for good, the potential to be redeemed. all the seeds were there, and because of a million invisible hands you will never be able to comprehend you are thrust into the place of the villain. you cannot be saved and even when you are it can’t be as yourself.

it’s so interesting bc mxtx protags tend to be like ‘you were a hero because it is what was asked of you. but now that the world refuses it for you will you still choose to be good’, but sy is the only protag for whom that choice just…never quite comes?  there’s never quite a moment where being good would be the harder choice for him. even when he dies for lbh there’s the threat of system failure & the knowledge that he has a chance of coming back. at every turn his goal IS to be kind, as dictated by a seemingly omniscient being. in that way, sj occupies a much more traditionally tragic mxtx protagonist role - whenever he IS kind, he is ostracized by the world. when he tries to save lqg, when he’s kind to nyy, when he tried to shield qht…what did that get him? 

it’s soooo interesting that like many mxtx characters, he’s seen by the world to be awful but internally does try to do good, but because he is doomed by the narrative he never gets anyone who /understands/ him, which is the grace that redeemed both wwx and xl at their lowest points. yqy is the closest to fitting this role for sj, but he like. was a COWARD about shit and never tried to heal the rift between him and sj and also semi-believed the rumors by the end. he wasn’t like mxtx mls who are defined by ‘even if the world is against you, i believe in your heart’

yqy was like i will protect you without the i will believe in your heart part, which would’ve felt worse for sj. like he can protect himself fine!!! he needed someone to just, understand that he wasn’t the evil person ppl said he was.

a lot of people have spoken more eloquently than me abt how sj was deprived of the chance to be good because of his circumstances within the narrative, but i’m just fascinated by how he was deprived of the chance to be good because of something greater than that, a mass of god-like beings outside of the story, exerting their will for a black and white narrative where he can be the one to blame. even when he could’ve been redeemed, he couldn’t have. the world literally refused him the chance.

I hc that SJ had more than 1 soulmates, as airplane said SV ended the way he wanted it to. But since SJ died all his love lines broke when SY took over his body, except for the one connected with LBH as SY is equally obsessed with him. So I think SJ is more of his soulmate than SY.
